  • Spiritual Simplicity - What's Love Got to Do With It?, Part 2

Chip uncovers why a very specific attitude will destroy love and how you can avoid it.

Learning to love in “Real Time”

    1. Responding to Hurts:Truth: Love is patient and kind (1 Corinthians 13:4a).Practice: When hurt, love absorbs the blow and responds with kindness.
    2. Responding to Differences:Truth: Love does not envy or boast; it is not rude, self-seeking, easily angered, or does it keep a record of wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:4b-5).Practice: Celebrate differences and refuse to compare (1 Corinthians 12:12-31).

    Comparison always leads to carnality.

    • Envy (Compares UPWARD): Produces jealousy, anger, resentment, and bitterness (1 Corinthians 12:15-16).
    • Solution: Believe God is good and has provided what's best for you. Admit and repent, ask God to use you, meditate on His goodness, and choose gratitude.
    • Arrogance (Compares DOWNWARD): Produces pride, boasting, rudeness, and independence (1 Corinthians 12:21-22).
    • Solution: Admit your needs and be vulnerable to receive God's goodness. Remember everything is from God, recall your humble beginnings, spend time with those who know your true self, and admit your needs.

  • Balancing Life's Demands - How to Escape the Rat Race... Forever!, Part 2

Chip wraps up this series with an important reminder of what it takes to be truly successful in your spiritual life, in your relationships, and in your finances.

The root problem in priority living according to Jesus is MATERIALISM.

    Matthew 6:1-18

    • Two motives
    • Two treasures
    • Two eyes
    • Two masters

Summary: Do not allow the pursuit of material things to thwart your spiritual development.

    Question:

    • How can we live in a material world without becoming materialistic? -Matthew 6:24-34

    The symptom:

    • Anxiety is the mark of a life preoccupied with material things.

The explanation: Stop your preoccupation with material things because...

    1. It's short-sighted –Matthew 6:25b
    2. It's illogical –Matthew 6:28-30
    3. It's unprofitable –Matthew 6:27
    4. It's disgraceful to God –Matthew 6:30-32

    The promise:

    • If you will pursue knowing Christ and making Him known as your first priority, He will meet all your material needs. -Matthew 6:33-34

    Application: Questions to Ponder

    • Are you "spending" or "investing" your life?
    • Is your life making a significant difference in the lives of others?
    • Do you live under "pressure" or under "priorities"?
    • Do your time, talent, and treasure reflect that pursuing Christ and making Him known is your #1 priority?

  • Balancing Life's Demands - Warning: Personal Discipline Can be Hazardous to Your Health, Part 2

You’re doing all the right things - reading your Bible, going to church, being generous with your finances - but you feel spiritually dead inside. What’s wrong? Chip shares how to break the spiritual activity trap and begin experiencing the peace and power you’re longing for.

To what degree have you taken specific steps in the following areas? (1=none; 2=little; 3=started & doing okay; 4=making good progress; 5=vigorously pursuing)

    • Schedule: Determining specifically how and when I will place the important and eternal in my daily life.
    • Discipline: Doing what needs to be done when it needs to be done.
    • Accountability: Enlisting the support of those who love me to help me keep my commitments to God.

Jesus' Warning #1: In our pursuit of "seeking first" His righteousness there is the danger of DISTORTION.

    Application of Matthew 5:20 to...

    • Murder –5:21-26
    • Adultery –5:27-30
    • Divorce –5:31-32
    • Oaths –5:33-37
    • Retribution –5:38-41
    • Enemies –5:43-48

Jesus' Warning #2: In our pursuit of "seeking first" His righteousness there is also the danger of DECEPTION. -Matthew 6:1-18

    • Giving: Key Issue = MOTIVE -Matthew 6:1-4
    • Prayer: Key Issue = DISCERNMENT -Matthew 6:5-8
    • Fasting: Key Issue = PERSPECTIVE -Matthew 6:16-18

Application: SECRECY is God's method of keeping our motives pure.

  • Balancing Life's Demands - How to Keep First Things First, Part 2

Setting priorities, putting first things first is important. The question is how do you keep those priorities in place? Chip explores the essential elements that must be in place in order for you to be able to keep your priorities in line over the long haul.

The Problem: Many start well, but few finish well.

    The Answer: Biblical Accountability

    • Definition: Biblical Accountability is enlisting the support of those who love me to help me keep my commitments to God.
    • Its Power: Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

The Need: Why accountability is essential for spiritual success

    Five Reasons:

    1. Because we never outgrow the need for PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY. -1 Corinthians 9:34-27
    2. Because past successes are no guarantee of FUTURE FAITHFULNESS. -1 Corinthians 10:1-5
    3. Because we constantly underestimate the power of our own SINFUL PASSIONS. -1 Corinthians 10:6-11
    4. Because we constantly overestimate our ability to handle TEMPTATION. -1 Corinthians 10:12
    5. Because we naively believe our struggles and temptations are UNIQUE. -1 Corinthians 10:13

Summary: "Therefore, my beloved, flee from IDOLATRY!” -1 Corinthians 10:14

The Means: “How to” develop accountability in relationships:

    • It begins at HOME.
    • In an atmosphere of LOVE.
    • It must be voluntary and by PERMISSION.
    • It must be SPECIFIC, not generic.
    • It must be REGULAR, not sporadic.
    • No more than 4 PEOPLE.
