Today's devotional is an excerpt from What I've Learned From Amazing Women of the Bible. Before God’s Word takes us through the lives of Saul and David, the opening chapter of 1 Samuel introduces us to a most amazing woman. Her name is Hannah, and she is a faithful servant of God who keeps her promises.

I really love the story of Hannah. When it comes to character, integrity, grit, and passion, Hannah blows away the other important people we meet in 1 Samuel.

There is a theme that runs through this brief section of Paul’s writings and these five words explain it all: always; without ceasing; in everything. But as Christians, does always really mean always? And what does “always” look like?

The Savior has come to God’s people! And in His ministry, His words and his deeds, we learn more about Him. Our study today is the story of Jesus in the synagogue in Capernaum, and we witness the trembling fear of the demons in the presence of Jesus.

Last time, we saw the power of Jesus’ word. He spoke with authority and the people were amazed. His words got their attention but not the devotion of their hearts.  So, in addition to the power of His words, we are about to see the power of His work and deeds.

The response to Jesus’ words was wonder and amazement. So, it seems it would be appropriate for me to challenge you to reflect on the wonders of Jesus and be more amazed at the gracious words of Jesus.

But then it dawned on me that these people were amazed but not saved. Should they really be an example to us?

My soul was convicted this morning that I’m not completely surrendered to God. Knowing what I know about God and walking with Him for many decades, it’s distressing to realize that I’m holding back.

As we say in the last devotional, things went bad in Nazareth. People of His birth place suddenly wanted to throw Him off a cliff. But why were the people so mad? And what can we learn from their reactions?

While in Nazareth, Jesus is bringing some good news for the oppressed Jewish nation. He is proclaiming the favorable time of the Lord is coming! And upon hearing his words, the Jews are excited and filled with anticipation. But their excitement at the fulfillment of these promises is about to be completely flipped.
