Matthew 22:37 requires us to love the Lord with all our heart, soul and mind. But everything starts with the mind. It is the mind that tells the rest of the body how to function and if we are to truly love the Lord with all of our heart and soul, it must start with the mind. That means we must intentionally feed our minds with those things that will cause us to behave in ways that are pleasing to the Lord so that our love of the Lord will be evident. In Philippians 4:8. Paul admonishes us to think on whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy. To think is a verb; it is an intentional action. When we intentionally think on positive things, our heart, soul and action will follow suit.
It is important that we in the Christian community take the steps necessary to de-stigmatize mental health needs. God was gracious enough to supply us with people who are trained in assisting individuals who need help with developing strategies to heal from traumas in their lives. This in no way undermines the need to pray but we can also pray for the Lord to lead us to the right therapist for us.

She is currently employed as a Clinician for adults with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities and various Mental Health diagnoses. Dr. Edna also works as a Behavior Consultant and Mobile Therapist with children, adolescents and their families. On today’s episode, we’re talking about Autism, a condition that would be viewed as a mental challenge. Autism is a developmental disorder of variable severity that is characterized by difficulties in social interaction and communication and by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behavior. Today, I am speaking with Mr. Maurice Snell who is living his best life with autism.
Maurice Snell is an individual living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and currently resides in Chicago, Illinois. His story began at Easter Seals as a youth when he was a client of what was then the Easter Seals Therapeutic Day School for individuals with autism.
After eight years at Easter Seals, Maurice transitioned to Benito Juarez Community Academy High School. There, he was involved in many activities such as the Marine Corps Junior ROTC, Juarez Eagles Concert and Marching Band. He graduated in 2002 as a member of the National Honor Society ranked 13th of his senior class and then attended Saint Xavier University. During his time at Saint Xavier, he participated in various organizations such as the Student Success Program and their Concert Band. He graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor’s in Liberal Studies.
Maurice worked at Easter Seals Metropolitan Chicago until this year, in which he’s currently employed at De La Salle Institute in Chicago as the Development Coordinator. Aside from his busy work schedule, Maurice continues to serve as an ambassador and inspirational story to many families impacted by autism and other special needs.

This season, we’ve been speaking with people who are persevering and thriving through their physical challenges. Today I am speaking with Miss Shameka Smith. Miss Smith is a native of the District of Columbia/Maryland/Virginia area most commonly known as the DMV. Shameka is a 32 year old woman who has tenacity and loves to smile. She uses her faith to inspire others. She is currently pursuing her associates degree at Prince George’s Community College and has a zeal and inspiration to evolve into the independent woman she aspires to be. She says, “When life comes at me fast, I sing.”

So far, I have spoken with people who faced physical challenges from birth. But what about people who have become disabled due to an accident? What about those for whom, in an instant, their life was forever changed? There are times when life throws a curve ball and you must figure out how you can still hit the ball to help you to at least get to first base.
Today, I am speaking with Miss Grace Muguwe who became visually challenged after being in a bus accident several years ago in her home country of Zimbabwe on the continent of Africa. Grace very candidly talks about her experiences and living her faith in the wake of a sudden tragedy and she encourages us to have conversations with people who are physically challenged and really hear them and see them.

One of the things I love most about our God is that He made us all different on purpose. And in our uniqueness, we display the splendor of God. Psalm 139:13-16 says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

There are many among us who are visually impaired in some way- some completely blind, others who can see shadows, etc. but physical blindness doesn’t discount one’s abilities to see in other ways and accomplish great things. In Isaiah 42:16, the Isaiah prophesies about the coming messiah as being one who “will lead the blind by ways they have not known along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the thigs I do; I will not forsake them.”
Rev. Pamela Shaw has been blind since birth, but her disability has not kept her from utilizing her abilities to advocate for herself and others and holding many prominent positions. She has more than 30 years of professional social work experience contributing to the development of policy and practice in the fields of homelessness, community mental health, deinstitutionalization, child welfare, family services and disability rights. Prior to her current position, Pamela was appointed by Governor Edward Rendell to serve as Director of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services.
She holds professional memberships in the American Association of Christian Counselors, the National Biblical Counseling Association and the National Association of Social Workers, and is a member of the Academy that Certifies Social Workers and is a Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. A skilled communicator, Rev. Shaw is frequently an invitational speaker at retreats, conferences and other special events and regularly presents many workshops and seminars around the country.
