We all face a myriad of challenges in life. The important thing to do is to be intentional to overcome those challenges rather than allowing the challenges to overcome us. Romans 8:37 tells us that we are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus who loves us. It goes on to say that there is absolutely nothing that can separate us from the love God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Today I want to welcome Miss Kimberly Waters. Miss Waters is a unique free-lance makeup-artist, fashionista and CP (cerebral palsy) advocate. Kimberly has worked in beauty retail in addition to the make-up and fashion industry for over 7 years, as she has an immense passion for it, and truly loves her craft. Kimberly has also trained under professional make-up artist, Maeion Bryant Beauty & Co. “The Mobile Beauty Connection,” which gave her the confidence and poise to pursue a career as a freelance make-up artist.

As a “trooper,” Kimberly is known for her ability to persevere as she was born prematurely with CP. She turned her challenges with CP into blessings, as she never gave in and never gave up. Kimberly now lives victoriously after overcoming many obstacles that were deemed unattainable including walking, talking, graduating, becoming independent, cooking, driving, and many more achievements to come.

Kimberly is also blessed to have parents (Penny, Kim), identical twin sister (Kayla), and loving grandparents who have been extremely supportive while always believing in her dreams and desires. It is Kimberly’s deepest prayer that her testimony will give people who have CP unwavering hope. She loves inspiring others with an optimistic approach to the hurdles that she has faced, ultimately encouraging others to have faith in God while finding creative ways to flourish in life.

Have you ever felt like you had a desire and the ability to do something that you were never afforded the opportunity to? Many people with “different abilities” never get the opportunity to share them because of assumptions made about what they can and can’t do. As a society, we are missing out on so many gifts and treasures because of our lack of empathy and willingness to be patient with those who may need to do things differently than many of us.

Whether we are defined as physically challenged or people with a disability, we have gifts to share that can benefit humanity.

Today I want to welcome Miss Emily Rowe and Mr. Ryan Ward. Miss Rowe is a 2020 graduate of Kennedy Krieger High School who has always been interested in Hospitality. Emily is now pursuing her interest in the Food and Beverage Management program at Montgomery College. As an ex-preemie and a twin, Emily knows the challenges faced by those with Cerebral Palsy and multiple disabilities. I’m sure that many of us have had experiences where we have either been hurt by someone else’s assumptions about us or we have made assumptions about others rather than having a conversation. Often, when people make assumptions about others, it can be hurtful to the one the assumption is made about. But I want to encourage someone who is listening to don’t ever allow others’ assumptions about you to define you! You are defined by what God says about you- you are made in God’s image; you are fearfully and wonderfully made (even if you have a physical challenge); you have everything you need because you belong to the creator and owner of the universe and everything in it!

My Guest for this episode is Miss Joy Hall. She is a native of Baltimore, Maryland educated in the Baltimore County and Baltimore City public school systems. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University) in 2000and her Masters of Science Degree in Communications from Stevenson University in December of 2018. Ms. Hall is currently the Visitor and Volunteer Services Coordinator at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History where she has worked since 2005 having moved from Visitor Services Associate and Group Reservationist. Ms. Hall oversees the visitor experience, coordinates tours, and trains volunteers and docents Ms. Hall volunteers with the Greater Baltimore Urban League Guild as the Correspondence Secretary and as a Mentor with YearUp. She is also a senior member of the newly founded ReLiving with CP Team which aims to prepare young adults with Cerebral Palsy for independent living, served as the 1989 National Easter Seals Poster Child, and was the first African American to represent Easter Seals. The topic is living with Cerebral Palsy and the triumphs and challenges faced throughout her life and career. Ms. Hall is also on the Executive Board of the Janet Hall Foundation. The Janet Hall Foundation was founded by entrepreneur Janet Hall of Baltimore, MD with a mission to assist breast cancer patients and their families in any way possible but focusing more on financial hardships. The Annual Janet Hall Wine and Spa Breast Cancer Fundraiser raises funds for individuals in the community who need assistance with everyday expenses or medical expenses.

The focus of this season is Living the Word through Physical Challenges. There are millions of people on this earth who are overcomers of physical challenges, whether they be due to birth defects or accidents. In each of the interviews you will hear this season, you will be inspired to push through your own physical challenges, but also to empathize with others through their physical challenges. You will be encouraged to live your life to the fullest, bloom where you are planted and in whatever condition you are planted and join the cause to make churches and other facilities more accessible to the physically impaired.

My guest today is Miss Rochelle Harrod. Miss Harrod is a native Washingtonian. At the age of one, she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus. She holds a Masters Degree in Counseling and Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Trinity Washington University. Rochelle never allowed her disability to hinder her personal, career, or educational goals. In her spare time, she loves to sell Avon, Paparazzi Jewelry, and Partylite Candles. She is a former Ms. Wheelchair DC, who is very passionate about showing individuals how to navigate the system and get the services they need. For the last 11 years, as a Prince Georgian she has served as an Independent Living Specialist for the Residents of Prince George’s County at Independence Now. Rochelle is also an advocate in her community. She serves on the board of Just 4 Us Foundation, which is a non-profit that provides community enrichment activities for at risk youth and individuals with special needs in DC and Prince George’s County. In addition,  she previously served as Minister In Training of Special Needs at Love International Fellowship Church for 7 years and now she is Minister in Training at her new church Word Faith Church of Jesus Christ in Riverdale,  Maryland.

Very often, as a society and even those of us who call ourselves followers of Jesus the Christ, think low of people who are incarcerated. Not only are they out of sight and thus out of mind, but many of us judge them in such a way that we justify them being out of mind. But as the people of God, we are charged to care about everyone, including those who are incarcerated, regardless of the crime. In this episode, I speak with Rev. Dr. Kimberlee Johnson about her work around prison education and she educates us about many challenges and issues within the prison system, as well as ways that the church can get involved and assist beyond doing worship services and Bible studies in prisons.
