The One

For the time of Advent and Christmas, the overarching theme is “the One” teaching us how God works through individuals to accomplish God's saving work. Most significantly, God works through His Son whose coming we celebrate and anticipate. But there are other individuals who also play a role -- John the Baptist, the virgin Mary. the shepherds and old Simeon. These individuals point us to the One and show how each one of us can point to the One in our lives, too . . . each one reaching one who reaches one who reaches one.

Restore us

In the midweek Advent services, the assigned psalms for each week repeat a plea for God to restore us. The writers of the psalms faced great challenges which they could not overcome without God's help. Their cry for restoration is our cry too as we await the fulfillment of God's promises in a child. His birth will make all things new.

Unexpected Endings

Often, we think we know how things will turn out -- at the game, on the job, in politics, in life.  But the message of Christianity at the end of the church year is to expect the unexpected.  The parable of the talents, the song of Zachariah, and the parable of the sheep and the goats are all about surprising and unexpected endings that come from the grace and love of God. And those unexpected endings can inspire us to do unexpected things. God's grace is always surprising, just ask the women going to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus on that early Sunday morning.
