I caught up with music producer and audio engineer queen - Becki Whitton (Aphir)!  We spoke about the many challenges artists have faced during lockdown in Australia - one of them being no shows and trying to connect with not only your audience but your music network/friends. 

Aphir is a well established audio engineer who has not only produced some amazing work of her own but has also produced, mixed and mastered a plethora of music (including my tracks). In this episode, she describes how being an introvert during lockdown made her fear that she would lose her person skills - the skills she has worked hard on to be able to make artists feel comfortable while being in the studio recording with her. This was a huge part of why Becki decided to stream content - as a way to interact with others and keep her people skills up! Becki gravitated towards Instagram stories as a way to not only generate content but to also give production and mixing tips. Quickly realising that Instagram wasn't the best platform for this as she couldn't easily show her computer screen where she uses Pro-Tools and Ableton she moved to Twitch - a platform traditionally used by gamers. 

Not only has Twitch allowed her to bring people on her journey of writing and producing her third album but it has let her show aside to her music that she likes more. Becki describes the pressure of a release day and how much is put into one day of releasing music, whereas for an artist the joy of writing music is generally the more fun moment and a side you rarely actually get to see.

When it comes to connecting with an audience through social media your main tools will be static images and copy! It can be hard to convey a message with only text, that is why you need to get creative and create a personality! Use your copy to express your tone of voice, whether it be through the use of emojis, spelling words phonetically or accentuating words by putting extra letters in there!

In this week's episode, I chat about whether you need to have a website or not as a music artist or a freelancer! I'll also explore some of the different platforms such as Squarespace, Wix, Shopify, WordPress, BigCommerce and Neto and share my experience with them and what some of the pros and cons are! 

I'll also touch on how you can use Mailchimp as a landing page if you're not ready to set up a full website. 

This is all drawn on my own personal experience and I would definitely recommend trying a few platforms yourself before settling on one so you can get the best result you want!

While Viceroyalty founder Zac Abroms is a little more on the DL with Viceroyalty's socials he sure has his own strong personal brand with witty tweets and bright fun images which occasionally feature his doggo Cherry.
