Manny Machado launched a 409-foot two-run home run and drove in three as the San Diego Padres defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in a massive late-season victory.

The Dodgers collected 10 hits and drew five walks—but San Diego held them to one run, stranded 12 runners and limited Los Angeles to a 1-for-9 night with runners in scoring position.

The defining sequence came in the fourth inning. After Machado gave San Diego a 2-0 lead, Los Angeles loaded the bases with nobody out. Craig Stammen removed Robbie Ray after the first out, and David Morgan limited the Dodgers to a sacrifice fly before striking out Shohei Ohtani with the bases loaded. The Padres immediately answered with two more runs in the fifth.

Bradgley Rodriguez delivered two scoreless innings and three strikeouts, Adrián Morejón worked a six-pitch eighth, and Mason Miller finished the victory by striking out Mookie Betts and Ohtani.

Fernando Tatis Jr. finished with three hits, Samad “Oddy” Taylor stole second and third in the ninth, and Freddy Fermín drove him home with an RBI single.

With the Cubs losing, the Padres stand alone atop the National League Wild Card standings. They are one game ahead of Chicago and Philadelphia, 3½ games ahead of Arizona, and their postseason magic number is down to one with four games remaining.

Jake Cronenworth delivered a monster performance as the San Diego Padres defeated the Miami Marlins 7-3 at Petco Park.

Cronenworth went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double, two home runs and five RBIs. His two-run homer opened the scoring in the second, his RBI double extended the lead in the fourth and his second two-run blast put the game away in the eighth. Four of his five RBIs came with two outs.

Walker Buehler controlled Miami through six scoreless innings before the Marlins suddenly pulled within one on Javier Sanoja’s three-run homer in the seventh. But Fernando Tatis Jr. answered immediately, crushing a 406-foot solo homer in the bottom half to restore the Padres’ two-run advantage. Cronenworth then supplied the knockout blow one inning later.

Samad Taylor added a perfect 3-for-3 day and an RBI double. Xander Bogaerts reached twice, scored twice and stole his 22nd base. San Diego finished with 10 hits, three home runs and seven runs against Sandy Alcantara and Brady Blalock.

Buehler earned the victory after allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 6⅔ innings. Kyle Hart escaped the seventh, Bryan Rodriguez worked a scoreless eighth and Mason Miller retired Miami in order in the ninth.

The Padres improve to 87-69 with six games remaining: three at the Dodgers beginning Tuesday and three at home against Arizona to finish the regular season. MLB’s Padres schedule

The San Diego Padres are absolutely rolling into the final eight games of the regular season.

San Diego erupted for six runs on six hits in the 5th inning, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 6-1 lead on the way to an 8-2 win over the Miami Marlins at Petco Park. The Padres improve to 85-69 and have now won 11 of their last 12 games.

Fernando Tatis Jr. tied the game with an RBI single, Dustin Harris followed with a two-run single to give San Diego the lead, and Ty France delivered the knockout blow with a 388-foot three-run homer. Jackson Merrill added some Merrill Madness with a massive 432-foot home run in the 8th, while Samad Taylor added another RBI single.

Nick Pivetta gave San Diego exactly what it needed, allowing just one run over five innings to earn the win. The Padres finished with 12 hits and went 6-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
