The 2026 transfer portal cycle has ignited a high-stakes "arms race" in the Big 12, as both Texas Tech and Oklahoma State have emerged as the nation's biggest winners by essentially rebuilding their entire identities in a single weekend.
Texas Tech: The "Crown Jewel" Class
After a historic 2025 season that ended in the College Football Playoff, Joey McGuire made it clear that Lubbock is no longer in the business of rebuilding. On January 4, 2026, the Red Raiders secured the commitment of the portal’s No. 1 overall player, quarterback Brendan Sorsby. The former Cincinnati star chose Tech over LSU after a "48-hour visit flurry," bringing 3,380 total yards and 36 touchdowns to Lubbock.
To address the loss of 27 sacks to the NFL Draft, Tech also signed:
Trey White (Edge): The San Diego State star who recorded 7 sacks and 90 pressures last year.
Austin Romaine (LB): A second-team All-Big 12 selection from Kansas State.
Julien Laventure (DL): An All-MAC disruptor from Akron.
Oklahoma State: The "North Texas" Blueprint
While Tech is reloading from a position of strength, Oklahoma State is executing a massive roster reset under new head coach Eric Morris. Following a disappointing 1–11 season and the departure of 55 players, Morris has imported the core of his record-breaking North Texas offense to Stillwater.
The Cowboys currently hold the No. 2 transfer class in the nation, headlined by their new "Triplets":
Drew Mestemaker (QB): The nation's leading passer last season at North Texas.
Caleb Hawkins (RB): The No. 1 ranked transfer running back (1,434 yards, 25 TDs).
Wyatt Young (WR): A top-10 national receiver who followed Morris to the Pokes.
As noted by analysts like Drake Toll—a staple on all famous "Toll" lists—the Big 12's aggressive use of NIL (with Tech boasting an $11 million portal budget) has allowed these programs to bypass traditional rebuilding. While Tech is arming itself for a national title run, Oklahoma State is using the portal to instantly transform from a cellar-dweller into a high-octane offensive threat.
