Locked On Padres - Daily Podcast On The San Diego Padres

The injury plagued Padres managed just 2 hits in 8 innings off Kyle Freeland, (4-14, 5.10 ERA) Nick Pivetta tossed 6 solid innings, Hunter Goodman homered and doubled in a run,  and the lowly Colorado Rockies (40-101) shut out the Pads 3-0 in the series opener in Denver.

Freeland retired the first 13 Pads’ hitters before Ramón Laureano’s 5th-inning double.

Jose Iglesias singled with 2 outs in the 8th for the only other Padres hit off Freeland, tied a career high with 10 strikeouts and threw just 88 pitches in a true master performance.

The Padres’ 1st 2 hitters got on base to start the 9th against Victor Vodnik, but Manny Machado hit into a double play to end the game.

Pivetta (13-5) gave up  7 hits but just 2 runs in 6 innings- a rare quality start at Coors Field for the Padres’ best pitcher this season, who came into tonight’s start with a career ERA of 17.36 at Coors Field, and had gotten ripped by the Rockies here in May., Pivetta’s record following a Pads’ loss fell to 9-4.

Rockies’ catcher Hunter Goodman  hit his 28th home run to open the scoring in the 3rd inning for the Rockies. Jordan Beck hit an RBI single in the 5th make it 2-0. Goodman added an RBI double to make it 3-0 in the 7th.

The Padres’ best chance to score came after Laureano’s 1-out double in the 5th, but Jackson Merrill flew out and Iglesias struck out to end the inning.

The loss is the Padres’ 9th in the last 11 games. They are still just 2 games behind the 1st-place LA Dodgers in the NL West race with 21 games left. The Dodgers have lost 6 of their last 7 games.

The Pads are tied with the New York Mets for 2nd place- 5 games behind the 1st-place Chicago Cubs and just 4 games ahead of the San Francisco Giants- in the NL Wild Card standings.

The Padres placed starting pitcher Nestor Cortes on the injured list with left biceps tendinitis, retroactive to September 4th.

Starting pitcher Dylan Cease struggled again, All-Star Relievers Adrian Morejon and Jason Adam each gave up an earned run late, and the San Diego Padres could not come through with a big hit late in a game they never led, dropping the series opener 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles at Petco Park.

Making matters worse, Adam- the all-star reliever who has been a rock of consistency- left the field on a cart with what has been confirmed as a ruptured quad tendon on the play that put the go-ahead run in scoring position.

Cease lasted just 4 innings in a bad start that could have been a lot worse, giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits, striking out 7 and walking 2. He left runners in scoring position in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings.

Luis Arraez- who had already picked up his 1,000th career hit in the 7th and tied the game with a single in the 2nd- struck out to end the game right after Will Wagner pinch hit for Freddy Fermin, and hit into a fielder’s choice that should have been a game-ending double play. (.220 hitter, 0 HR, no power #’s, 2-9 as PH)

Jackson Merrill- who was activated from the injured list today- inexplicably ran for Wagner rather than hit for Fermin.

The Padres came close to tying the game or taking the lead in the 7th. With Arraez on 1st and 1 out, Manny Machado ripped one deep to left, but Dylan Beavers ran it down in the edge of the track for a long out.

The Orioles took the lead in the top of the 7th off Jason Adam, who gave up a leadoff single to Jeremiah Jackson to start the inning, then Gunnar Henderson bounced one off the mound, for an infield hit. Adam came up lame as he moved toward the ball, with cameras catching him appearing to say he felt something pop. Beavers singled in Jackson with the go-ahead run.

Ramon Laureano’s RBI single in the bottom of the 5th scored Freddy Fermin- who had reached on an error- to tie the game at 3.

Arraez singled in after a 9-pitch at-bat to tie the game at 2, right after Bryce Johnson’s RBI single got the Pads on the board.

The O’s got 2 in the against Cease, who gave up an infield single then walked a batter, leading to a 2-run double off the bat of Samuel Basallo.

Adrian Morejon gave up a solo home run to Jckson in the 5th, the 1st earned run Morejon has allowed since August 3rd.

Fernando Tatis Jr. was scratched right before the game after coming up lame in a fly ball to right field late in yesterday’s loss at Minnesota.

Joe Ryan shut the Padres out for 7 innings, Byron Buxton homered, and the Padres got beat down 7-2 by the Minnesota Twins to drop the series in Minneapolis and fall 2 games behind the LA Dodgers in the NL West heading into the final month of the season.

Buxton and Royce Lewis had 2 hits apiece for the Twins, while Ryan (13-7) allowed just 5 hits while striking out 8 Padres.

Freddy Fermin and Bryce Johnson each drove in a run in the 9th inning for the Padres, who only threatened Ryan once, putting runners on 1st and 2nd base with no outs in the 4th. But the All-Star righthander struck out Ramón Laureano and Gavin Sheets then got Jake Cronenworth to fly out to end the threat.

Buxton took Kyle Hart (3-3) deep for a 2-run shot- his 4th homer in 4 games- that gave the Twins a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning.

Just called up from Triple-A El Paso earlier in the day, Hart gave up 3 runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief as the Pads went with a bullpen game started by David Morgan. Hart hit Luke Keaschall with a pitch to start the Minnesota 4th, and he scored on a single by James Outman. Keaschall and Lewis had RBI singles in a three-run fifth to make it 6-0.

Gavin Sheets went 2-4 in the game and 7-11 in the series for the Padres.

The Pads have dropped 5 of their last 7 games.

San Diego Superstar Outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. left the game in the 8th inning after coming in on a fly ball and coming up lame grabbing his right hamstring.

Elias Diaz hit 2 home runs, the offense erupted for 7 runs on 7 hits in the 7th inning, Nick Pivetta lived up to his “stopper” reputation, the bullpen tossed 4 scoreless innings, and the San Diego Padres pummeled the Minnesota Twins 12-3 in Minneapolis.

The Pads were being no hit until the 5th inning, when Diaz launched the 1st of his 2 bombs- this one off Twins starter Taj Bradley, who allowed only that 1 run in 5 innings- to tie the game 1–1.

Diaz, the starter turned backup catcher after the Freddy Fermin acquisition, put an exclamation point on the 7-run 7th with a 2-run shot that made it 10-3 San Diego.

The 7th started with 4 straight singles from Fernando Tatis Jr., Luis Arraez, Machado (scoring Tatis) and Ryan O’Hearn. (scoring Arraez)

Gavin Sheets added an RBI single, (scoring Manny) Jake Cronenworth hit a 2-run double off the wall, (scoring pinch-runner Bryce Johnson and O’Hearn) and Diaz homered. (scoring Cronenworth)

Ramon Laureano added a 2-run homer in the 8th for the Padres, who had scored 2x in the 6th on back-to-back RBI singles by Laureano (scoring Arraez) and Sheets. (scoring Machado)

Pivetta (13-4) didn’t get the win, but the Padres’ record is now 12-3 in games he has started following a loss. The righty gave up a 2-run homer to Byron Buxton in the 5th, leaving the game down 3-1 before the Pads scored 2x in the 6th to tie the game.

Adrian Morejon (11-4) came in and threw a perfect 6th to pick up the win.

Jason Adam, Jeremiah Estrada, and Alek Jacob also each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Padres’ bullpen, one of the best in all of Major league baseball.

The 3-4-5-6 hitters in the San Diego lineup- Machado, O’Hearn, Laureano and Gavin Sheets- combined to go 8-18 with 7 RBI.

Manny picked up his 1000 hit as a Padre in the 6th, and later drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the 7th.

The Padres are just a game behind the LA Dodgers, who lost (for the 2nd straight night) to Arizona at home.

Jake Cronenworth’s error led to a 4-run 4th inning, starting pitcher Nestor Cortes only made it 3 innings before getting ejected in the 4th, the Pads left a ton of runners on base, and the result is a 7-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins in this series opener.

The Pads kept the heat on late, scoring a pair of runs in the 7th on Fernando Tatis' RBI single. Former Twin Luis Arraez hit a bullet right at the 2nd baseman, and Fernando got doubled up off 1st to end the threat.

The Padres also threatened in the 9th, but Twins Closer Kody Funderburke- who had walked 2 runners on base- struck out Ramon Laureano to end the game.

Cortes (2-3) was thrown out by home plate ump Manny Gonzalez during a mound visit following a walk that gave the Twins runners on 1st & 2nd with nobody out in that dreadful 4th inning. Wandy Peralta came in for Cortes and got Kody Clemens to hit a perfect double-play ball right at Jake Cronenworth, who let it go through his legs allowing both runners to score and giving the Twins a 5-2 lead.

The Padres had taken the 2-1 lead on an RBI single off the bat of Jose Iglesias, starting at short for the injured Xander Bogaerts. The Pads went up 1-0 on Arraez's sacrifice fly in the top of the 3rd. The Twins tied it at 1 on a fielder's choice groundout in the bottom of the 3rd.

Minnesota added 2 more runs in the 5th, including Royce Lewis' solo homer.

Zebby Matthews (4-4) pitched 6 solid innings, giving up 3 runs to pick up the win.Funderburke got his 2nd career save.

Gavin Sheets went 3-3 for the San Diego. Fernando added 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Iglesias also had 2 hits and an RBI.

The Padres have lost 4 of their last 5 games, but they remain just 2 games behind the LA Dodgers- who lost 3-0 to the Arizona D'Backs- in the NL West.
