Jake Cronenworth’s RBI single snapped a 1-1 tie in the 7th inning, Freddy Fermin added a 2-run homer on the next pitch, Yu Darvish gave up just a run on 4 hits in 6 innings, and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 4-1 on the road in their series opener.

The win moves the Pads into 2nd place in both their division and wild card playoff races- they are just a game behind the LA Dodgers in the National League West race, and a game behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL Wild Card race.

Darvish (W, 2-3) struck out 6 and walked none before giving way to the Padres’ vaunted bullpen to nail it down from there.

Jeremiah Estrada, Mason Miller and Robert Suarez (SV, 33) each tossed a scoreless inning. Miller struck out the side in the 8th inning.

Jackson Merrill doubled in Fernando Tatis to give the Padres a 1-0 lead in the top of the 6th. Merrill went 3-4, and Gavin Sheets went 2-3.

Fernando Tatis Jr., who has been struggling for most of the season, added 2 hits and scored a run.

Rafael Devers tied it up for the Giants with a solo homer in the bottom of the 6th.

Logan Webb (L, 10-9) shut out the Padres through 5 innings and pitched well through 6 before falling apart in the 7th.

Fernando Tatis had 2 hits, a walk, 2 runs scored and an RBI, Dylan Cease had another strong start, and the San Diego Padres beat the Boston Red Sox 6-2 at Petco Park to take the series 2-1 after dropping the opener 10-2 on Friday night.

Luis Arraez hit a 2-run double in the 3rd inning to get the Pads in the board. Fernando Tatis gave them a 3-0 lead with an RBI single in the 5th.

Jake Cronenworth drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk, and Ryan O’Hearn added a sacrifice fly.

Tatis had 2 hits, a walk, an RBI and 2 runs scored. Arraez went 2-4 with 2 RBI.

Cease cruised through 6 innings, giving up only 4 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 7 before leaving after a walk and a single gave Boston runners on 1st & 2nd with nobody out in the 7th.

Jason Adam came on and hit Matt Yoshida with a pitch, then Romy Gonzalez hit a hard ground right at shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who muffed the perfect double-play ball and allowed 2 runs to score.

Adam then gave up a single to Wilyer Abreu before regrouping to strike out Ceddanne Rafaela and Abraham Toro back-to-back before giving way to Adrian Morejon, who struck out Roman Anthony to end the inning.

The bullpen gave the Pads 3 more scoreless innings, striking out 6 while giving up just 1 walk and 1 hit. Today it was Adam, Morejon and David Morgan.

Ramon Laureano’s RBI single drove in Xander Bogaerts with the winning run after Closer Robert Suarez blew another save, and Ace Michael King’s 1st start since May 18th ended with the Padres’ 6th walk-off win of the season, 5-4 in 0 innings at Petco Park.

King, returning from a shoulder injury, pitched 2 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 4 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1.

Bogaerts homered, drove in 2 runs and scored 2 more to lead the San Diego attack. Bogey hit a solo homer in the 2nd inning and ripped an RBI single in the 3rd, driving in the 1st 2 runs for the Padres against his former team.

Suarez blew the lead- and the save- in the 9th inning, giving up an RBI double to Roman Anthony before settling down and keeping the score tied.

Jeremiah Estrada went 2 innings, striking out 5 while allowing just one hit. Estrada has 12 strikeouts in his last 5 innings of (scoreless) work. Jason Adam (4-3) picked up the win

Nick Pivetta gave up 5 earned runs on 5 hits in 6 innings, the Padres offense left 12 runners on base while going 1-7 with runners in scoring position, dropping the series opener 10-2 to the Boston Red Sox at Petco Park.

Pivetta (11-4) was cruising until the 4th inning, when a single by Lance Bergman followed by 2 walks, a sacrifice fly, an errant pickoff throw by Pivetta and a 2-run home run by Wilyer Abreu. It was the right-hander’s 1st loss at home this season.

Padres pitchers walked 8 hitters- tying their season-high. This one could’ve gotten much worse. The Red Sox, one of MLB’s best hitting teams, went 2-12 with runners in scoring position. Reliever Sean Reynolds gave up 5 earned runs on 3 hits while walking 5, throwing 52 pitches in an inning and a third.

The Pads’ offense was stifled all night by Boston starter Walker Buehler. The former LA Dodger allowed just 4 hits in 6 innings. Buehler is 7-1 in 13 career starts against the Padres, 2-1 at Petco.

The Padres finally broke through in the 8th inning, scoring only 2 runs when they had the bases loaded- all on walks- with nobody out. The Pads left 2 runners on in the 8th inning as well.

Jake Cronenworth hit an RBI single, and Ramon Laureano added an RBI groundout.

Fernando Tatis continues to struggle. Tati struck out 3x on an 0-5 night. The superstar right-fielder is hitting .095 over the last 7 days, and .261 on the season.

Jackson Merrill went 0-3, as did Xander Bogaerts.

Cronenworth went 2-3, and Luis Arraez went 2-4 for San Diego.

Padres’ ace Michael King, out since May 18th with a shoulder issue, will make his return. King (4-2, 2.59 ERA) hasn’t pitched since May 18th. The Red Sox will go with Lucas Gioliti. (8-2, 3.57 ERA)
