Locked On Patriots Hit - Quick Takes on the New England Patriots

The pressure may be building on the New England Patriots to get a Christian Gonzalez extension done. Gonzalez wasn't part of the Patriots walkthrough, with Mike Vrabel saying he's continuing through the return-to-play process. There's no reason to rush Gonzo back for joint practices or preseason action, but his absence could highlight just how important he is to this defense. New England's cornerback depth has already been tested, and now DeVonta Smith and the Philadelphia Eagles present another major challenge. If the Patriots secondary struggles without Gonzalez, does his leverage in contract negotiations only increase? Plus, the Patriots RB3 competition may finally be taking shape. Hassan Haskins and JaMycal Hasty could be battling for the job behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson, with special teams, pass protection and versatility potentially deciding it. #NewEnglandPatriots #Patriots #ChristianGonzalez #PatriotsNews #NFL Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Drake Maye just reminded everyone what this New England Patriots offense is being built around. Maye reportedly went 15-of-17 during 11-on-11 work at Patriots training camp, highlighted by a roughly 70-yard touchdown connection with AJ Brown. Romeo Doubs continued his strong stretch, while Maye also led a late drive featuring Kayshon Boutte, Pop Douglas and Rhamondre Stevenson to set up a field goal. Plus, are we having the wrong conversation about the Patriots running backs? Instead of focusing entirely on RB3, the bigger question might be how New England divides touches between Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. Could it really be a 50-50 split, or is Stevenson's versatility and pass protection being overlooked? Drake Maye is rolling, his new weapons are clicking, and the Patriots backfield could be one of the more interesting battles to watch heading into Week 1. #NewEnglandPatriots #Patriots #DrakeMaye #AJBrown #TreVeyonHenderson #NFL Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Mike Vrabel isn't wasting any time putting pressure on New England Patriots kicker Andy Borregales. After Borregales went 2-for-5 in the Patriots preseason opener, including a missed opportunity to potentially win the game, New England brought out narrow goalposts at practice. Borregales responded by going 5-for-6, according to Alex Barth. That's exactly the type of response the Patriots need. Plus, New England now turns its attention to the Philadelphia Eagles. With DeVonta Smith back, Patriots corners like Kendall Vildor, Quran Prunty and Channing Canada are about to get a major test during joint practices. Can New England's cornerback depth hold up against one of the NFL's best route runners? #NewEnglandPatriots #Patriots #MikeVrabel #AndyBorregales #NFL Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Christian Gonzalez could be looking at a MASSIVE contract extension with the New England Patriots. After Devon Witherspoon landed a four-year, $132 million deal, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler suggested Gonzalez could need to top the $33 million-per-year benchmark — potentially putting his next contract around $35 million annually. Fowler also reported that negotiations between Gonzalez and the Patriots haven't been as smooth as hoped. But should New England just pay him? We’ve seen what this Patriots secondary looks like without Gonzalez, and it makes the battle for depth behind him even more important. Kendall Vildor is making a legitimate push for a roster spot, but New England simply doesn't have another player capable of replacing what Gonzo provides. Will the New England Patriots actually trade Kayshon Boutte before the 2026 NFL season? The Boutte trade speculation continues, but ESPN’s Mike Reiss says people inside the Patriots organization have told him Boutte is expected to be a big part of what New England does this season. So what happens if another NFL team comes calling with a legitimate offer? Plus, Romeo Doubs is starting to make serious noise in Patriots training camp. Doubs hauled in three impressive touchdowns during practice as his chemistry with Drake Maye continues to improve. And there’s one position starting to concern me: cornerback. With questions surrounding Christian Gonzalez’s availability and Carlton Davis working his way back, how comfortable should New England be with its cornerback depth entering the season? Kayshon Boutte. Romeo Doubs. The Patriots secondary. Plenty to discuss as New England gets closer to Week 1. #NewEnglandPatriots #Patriots #KayshonBoutte #DrakeMaye #RomeoDoubs #NFL Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Did the New England Patriots send a message about Kayshon Boutte’s future?

While AJ Brown, Romeo Doubs and Pop Douglas didn’t play in the Patriots preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts, Boutte was on the field for 16 snaps.

Was it simply New England needing an experienced receiver on the field? Or was there something more behind the decision with questions continuing to surround Boutte’s future with the Patriots?

Plus, rookie EDGE Gabe Jacas impressed in his preseason debut despite a PFF grade that didn’t necessarily reflect his impact. Jacas made plays around the quarterback, showed high-level effort on special teams and even earned an enthusiastic reaction from Mike Vrabel.

Two very different Patriots storylines coming out of the preseason opener.

Three New England Patriots stood out in the preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Kyle Williams made his case in a crowded Patriots wide receiver room, including an impressive route and connection with Tommy DeVito for a touchdown. Kendall Vildor took advantage of his opportunity at cornerback, coming away with an interception as New England continues searching for reliable depth behind Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis. But Bradyn Swinson might have been my biggest takeaway. The second-year pass rusher made multiple impact plays, including batting down a pass on fourth down and generating pressure that helped create another Patriots interception. It’s only preseason, but Williams, Vildor and Swinson all gave New England something worth paying attention to. Drake Maye won the room with his bold response about keeping Patriots playmakers happy—just win games, and everything else falls into place. With the AJ Brown saga in Philly as a backdrop, Maye’s focus on team success over individual stats raises the question: Will unity be the key to New England’s offensive chemistry? On the defensive side, rookie cornerback Karon Prunty has quietly emerged as a player to watch ahead of the Patriots’ preseason clash with the Indianapolis Colts. With Christian Gonzalez still managing injuries and Carlton Davis battling recurring hamstring issues, can Prunty seize the spotlight at corner? The young secondary could be pivotal as New England sets its sights on the AFC playoffs. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
