Locked On Saints - Daily Podcast On The New Orleans Saints

Rod Walker of the Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate joins to talk about what the New Orleans Saints have done well, where they are set to improve, and how much more the offensive will open up for Jameis Winston.

Rod and Ross also discuss the injured players making their returns soon for the Saints. Michael Thomas, Erik McCoy, and Terron Armstead are set to have an enormous impact on the offense while David Onyemata should help to bolster the Saints pass rush, likely their biggest improvement area.

Looking ahead to the Seattle Seahawks, how important a win would be for the Saints, and what it will take to get it, even without Russell Wilson under center for Seattle.

The New Orleans Saints are set to return Michael Thomas, David Onyemata, Wil Lutz, and other very important pieces soon after this week's bye week. What kind of impact with they each have? Michael Thomas allows the team to extend drives, and helps to deliver in an area of the field the Saints and Jameis Winston have not produced steadily so far this season.

David Onyemata brings the presence of a top-5 pass rusher back to the Saints interior line, thus generating better pressure on opposing QBs and opening up opportunities for other players around him. Cam Jordan, Marcus Davenport (when he returns), Payton Turner, and Carl Granderson should all see benefit from Onyemata's long-awaited season debut.

Wil Lutz, recently injured players like Deonte Harris and Taysom Hill, Erik McCoy, Terron Armstead, Nick Vannett, Kwon Alexander, and others all have the chance to return over the next few weeks following the Saints' bye. This will allow the team to carry more depth, and improve in all areas, even where they've already performed well through the first quarter of the season.

The New Orleans Saints have had a roller coaster of a season thus far. Breaking down their first quarter of the season reveals where they've been strong and where there's still room to improve. Jameis Winston and the New Orleans Saints may not be putting up a ton of yards, but they're scoring at a top-5 clip in terms of passing touchdowns. Meanwhile Alvin Kamara and the injured offensive line are still rushing at a top-10 rate.

On the defensive side, putting together a stronger pass rush has been the main focus of evaluation over the first quarter of the year. Can the Saints improve that area of the defense even before the returns of David Onyemata and Marcus Davenport? Meanwhile on offense, the Saints will look to find a way to string together longer drives and take more time off the clock.

Michael Thomas, David Onyemata, and Wil Lutz are obvious boosts to get back for the team. But any and all players returning have the ability to help set the Saints up for noticeable improvements.

The New Orleans Saints should have had two players of the week this week. While Marshon Lattimore capped off a tremendous performance against former Ohio State University Buckeye teammate Terry McLaurin with a Defensive Player of the Week win, Blake Gillikin's remarkable day goes uncelebrated by the NFL. Why Blake Gillikin deserved the award, what he achieved that no one has since the year 2000, and how Marshon Lattimore's award is confirmed in the numbers and on tape.

The Saints have only 8 sacks on the season, good for second to last in the NFL through five games. How double-teams on the edge have slowed down the typically production pass rush and how getting DT David Onyemata and EDGE Marcus Davenport back in the mix soon helps Cam Jordan, Carl Granderson, and Payton Turner.

WWL-TV's Brooke Kirchhofer joins to talk about what the Saints have done so far this season, how the bye week turned out to be right on time, and what happens next as the team gets healthier. Celebrating Demario Davis and Marshon Lattimore for their standout starts to the season.

The New Orleans Saints defense has been outstanding so far this season, led by the remarkable performance of cornerback Marshon Lattimore. Not only was his performance in Sunday's win against the Washington Football Team impressive, but it's a continuation of the remarkable production he's displayed in season action so far. With a league-leading 10 pass break ups, 11 forced incompletions, and a whopping 39% forced incompletion percentage, is Marshon Lattimore putting up a defensive Player of the Year bid early this season?

How the New Orleans Saints have been evolving their offensive attack so far this season and how personnel usage, pass, and run percentages tell us what we need to know and how the return of players like Michael Thomas, Tre'Quan Smith, and even Nick Vannett in.

The Saints are first and ted first in two major categories on the offensive and defensive side that immediately complement one another and have immediately led to their three wins. While their offensive efficiency currently remains along the middle of the league, there are some good signs for a continued climb as the team gets healthier while Marcus Williams, Demario Davis, and rest of the Saints defense continue to surpass expectations.

The New Orleans Saints get a much needed victory heading into the bye with a big win against the Washington Football Team. Marshon Lattimore led the way for the Saints defense in a huge matchup against Terry McLaurin. Meanwhile Jameis Winston excited and impressed bouncing back from two early turnovers and punter Blake Gillikin keeps WFT's offense operating from deep within their own territory.

New Orleans came into this game tied for first in redzone defense only allowing TDs 33% of the time and held up to that ranking against Taylor Heinicke and the WFT offense. However, the Saints continue to be slow in the third quarter. Something the team will likely try to address with scripted plays and returning talent after the bye week.

Michael Thomas, Kwon Alexander, Wil Lutz, Erik McCoy, Tre'Quan Smith, and many others could turn this New Orleans Saints defense into an entirely new team in the weeks following the Week 6 bye. Carrying a 3-2 record into a bye week that was initially considered too early, now looks to be the best case scenario right on time.

The New Orleans Saints fell victim to some curious moments in last week's loss to the New York Giants. From that game came a lot of questions about QB Jameis Winston and head coach Sean Payton and the trust between the two. But is trust really the dynamic at play? Or is it something more nuanced? How the New Orleans Saints move forward could plummet their end of year aspirations or skyrocket them into top-10 offensive consideration. How returns like Michael Thomas, Tre'Quan Smith, Terron Armstead, and Erik McCoy factor in will be key.

Keys to victory for the New Orleans Saints offense aren't just about one quarterback. How Taysom Hill can play a large role in this matchup with the Washington Football Team and why being under center is not the answer. Analytics show that winning on early downs will be important for the Saints in Washington as they are at the bottom of the league in 3rd down defense.

On the defensive side, a couple of Ohio State Buckeyes are the marquee matchup. Washington's Terry McLaurin will look to continue his streak of catches without drops up against former teammate Marshon Lattimore who looks to help the Saints defense rebound after the Giants loss. Cameron Jordan in for an important game in pass rush up against a sub-par WFT right side, and why the Saints defense should neither bend nor break for the sake of the offense.

The New Orleans Saints, led by Jameis Winston and Alvin Kamara will look to find balance in their offense as they travel to Landover, MD to take on the Washington Football team and young quarterback Taylor Heinicke.

A matchup for the ages could come to light with former Ohio State Buckeyes cornerback Marshon Lattimore and wide receiver Terry McLaurin face off while the WFT offense fights off injuries all over their skill position areas.

Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints offense will look to maintain their aggression, get ahead early, and stay ahead after an uncharacteristic fold against the New York Giants last weekend. Demario Davis and the Saints defense will look for a bounce back performance at FedEx Field.

Jameis Winston put some good tape up as the New Orleans Saints dropped their Sunday home-opener tot he New York Giants. Throwing players open, hitting downfield receivers in stride, and showing improvement with ball placement. While Tre'Quan Smith and Michael Thomas reportedly look good to return soon according to WR Coach Curtis Johnson, it will likely not happen until after the bye week. But there are some indications that the passing game can hit its stride before then, if the opportunities are given.

Rookie linebacker Pete Werner had a great game against the Giants. Despite the loss, he put together several plays that stood out and show that he's a viable option next to Demario Davis until Kwon Alexander returns.

Tony Jones Jr will miss 3-4 weeks with his injury, in the meanwhile Devine Ozigbo makes his return to the Crescent City. The Saints also moved on from kicker Aldrick Rosas, signing Cody Parkey as his replacement.

WWL-TV Sports Director Doug Mouton joins to discuss what went wrong against the New York Giants, the return to the Superdome, and what has to go right in Washington against the Washington Football Team next weekend.
