Locked On Stars - Daily Podcast On The Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars organization had themselves a busy weekend. Ben Bishop was traded to the Buffalo Sabres for future considerations. This was a necessity for the Stars as they have an extra $5 million in cap space to re-sign players like Jake Oettinger and Jason Robertson. Will Dallas be able to utilize their cap space effectively this summer? We also discuss the success of Mavrik Bourque in the QMJHL. Bourque was the recent recipient of the Guy Lafleur trophy which is awarded to the MVP of the QMJHL postseason MVP. Will he be ready to make the jump to the NHL sometime in the next season? Lastly, we discuss some predictions for the Stanley Cup Finals. Will the Colorado Avalanche be able to take down the back-to-back champion Tampa Bay Lightning?

We’re back today with more hypotheticals. What would it look like if the Dallas Stars looked to add some of the biggest names from this past NHL season to their roster? Alex DeBrincant has flown under the radar in Chicago, would he be able to lift the Dallas Stars to the next level offensively? Kevin Fiala had his best season with Minnesota, but is seeking a new contract. Could Dallas be a good fit for him? Who would he fit best with? David Pastrnak could be looking to move on from a Bruins organization that seems to be going down the drain. Could he be Joe Pavelski’ newest protege and even replace him later on?

Marc Savard is currently coaching Wyatt Johnston in the OHL playoffs and has recently emerged as a favorite for the head coaching job for the Dallas Stars. Today, Dane is joined by Ryan Chambers of Starcastic Remarks to discuss what a team coached by Savard would look like. How much would his connection with Tyler Seguin factor into the decision? Would Dallas be an easier place to coach than Boston? Who are some other probable candidates to come in and coach the Stars?

On Tuesday, the Dallas Stars announced that 25-year-old forward Denis Gurianov signed a 1-year extension worth $2.9 million. It seems that Gurianov is getting one last shot to prove himself with to the Dallas front office. He has shown great offensive capabilities in the past, but those performances are spread out too far. In the OHL, Stars 2021 1st round pick Wyatt Johnston was awarded the Red Tilson trophy which is given to the most outstanding OHL player during the regular season. Johnston is also helping his Windsor Spitfires fight for the OHL title against the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Coming into this season, Denis Gurianov was a guy that seemed destined to fully reveal himself to the NHL world as a legit star (pun FULLY intended). While there were certainly some great moments from Denis, he left a lot to be desired from his 2021-2022 campaign. Denis never found a true home on the roster and was placed on just about every line with a weird variety of other players. He was also a healthy scratch on many occasions, which gave us one of the oddest running storylines of the entire season. How much of Denis' struggles were of his own doing and how much blame should be assessed to the coaching staff? Will Gurianov stay in Dallas next season, or will he move on to a new city and team?

The trade market in the 2022 NHL offseason has plenty of big names to offer. Jakob Chychrun, J.T. Miller and Jake DeBrusk are all guys that could make a positive impact on any NHL roster, including the Dallas Stars. Today, we dive into the idea of acquiring these three players. How likely is it that any of them come to Dallas? What would be the pros and cons of adding any of these players to the roster? How much would the Stars have to give up? Would it be worth it?

Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn had a very busy season. He carried the burden of being one of the biggest enforcers on the roster, accumulating 88 PIMs (most on the team). Jamie was certainly the leader on the ice for Dallas as he fought anyone who dared threaten him or his teammates. While this is admirable to some degree, there was still much to be desired from the captain this past season. His offense came in electric spurts, but those spurts were spread out too far apart. Jamie was one of many Stars who failed to deliver consistent secondary scoring. What does Jamie need to do in 2022-2023 in order to make him worth $9.5 million a season?

On Tuesday it was announced that Stars forward Alexander Radulov would be joining Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL. It appears his time as a Dallas Star has come to an end, and it leaves us time to reflect on the fun we had watching him in Dallas for the past 5 seasons in Dallas. His contagious energy and clutch playoff performances will be remembered by many for years to come. What does this move mean for the Dallas Stars as a franchise? We are witnessing a changing of the guard in Dallas. There is still plenty of veteran talent on the team, but they are slowly being overshadowed by the next generation. Is that a good thing? To close, we freak out over the epic game we saw in game 1 of the western conference finals between the Avalanche and Oilers.

Miro Heiskanen and Esa Lindell (with the rest of team Finland) won gold in the IIHF world championship against team Canada with a 4-3 OT win. Why is it so important for these Stars players to have these experiences? How does it benefit the individual players and franchise as a whole? We also take some time today to reflect on Jason Spezza’s brief stint in Dallas as he recently announced his retirement from the NHL a few days ago. To close, get Dane’s thoughts and predictions on the 2022 western Conference Finals. Will McDavid vs MacKinnon live up to the hype?
