Locked On Suns - Daily Podcast On The Phoenix Suns

We give you the highlights of Adrian Wojnarowski’s report on the Robert Sarver’s failure to learn from his mistakes and general manager James Jones’ “unorthodox” stance toward the draft and, of course, we react.

Could the NBA really step in here?

The search for a GM is reportedly now underway as well and the Suns also expect to fill many of the positions vacated by the dismissal of Ryan McDonough and his staff in October. We talk about potential candidates and how the franchise could continue to change under Jones’ control.

We break down the bottom seven teams in the NBA as the Suns again find themselves checking in on the reverse standings during the stretch run of the season.

Using this piece over at The Step Back written by yours truly, we discuss the incentives for each team to bottom out over the final 20 games of the year. Some, like the Wizards or Hawks, should ride out the growth of their young players while others, like the Knicks, are right to blow it up.

Finally, we imagine how this all could affect the Suns on draft night.

We dive into a comeback victory by the Suns on the road in Miami, 124-121, which featured some aggressive defense to close things out, a savvy drawn foul by Devin Booker to earn a pair of free throws that gave the Suns their eventual winning lead and defense by Deandre Ayton on the final possession to close the game.

We also hit on Troy Daniels’ hot scoring night and whether he might stick in the rotation, why Josh Jackson was doomed to fail defending the 7-foot Kelly Olynyk and the playmaking opportunities Mikal Bridges’ bench role is opening.

We also hone in on the point guard spot — who the Suns might keep between the two rookies and what they’re looking for in the backcourt long-term besides just the names that are always in rumors.

We dig into the grotesque loss, 111-98, at the hands of the Cavaliers on the road. How do things continue to go so wrong?

From Tyler Johnson’s slow, inefficient adjustment to life in purple and orange to the peculiar change to the starting lineup with Josh Jackson remaining at power forward alongside Kelly Oubre Jr., we break this winnable game down.

We are joined for a crossover episode by David Nash and Max McCauley of the Seven Seconds or Less Podcast to give a snapshot of what this summer might look like for the Suns.

First, we discuss how the Suns might view T.J. Warren after his breakout season. Do they try to send him to a contender where he might be more valuable and reset at power forward or ease him into a bench role?

Then, we debate how seriously fans should take the idea that the Suns aren’t valuing their picks in this year’s draft after several comments from general manager James Jones indicating that might be true. Finally, we discuss whether Igor Kokoskov is safe if the Suns continue to play poorly and what the four of us would do to address the point guard and power forward positions this summer.

We are joined for a crossover episode by David Nash and Max McCauley of the Seven Seconds or Less Podcast to discuss how this season has gone in Phoenix.

First, we imagine how the season would have gone if former general manager Ryan McDonough had not made his last trade swapping Brandon Knight for De’Anthony Melton.

Then, we evaluate Devin Booker’s injuries and break down the play of the Suns’ two rookies, Mikal Bridges and Deandre Ayton, as we approach the three-quarters mark of the NBA season.

We preview the Rising Stars Challenge and Three-Point Contest this weekend in Charlotte before moving on to the draft.

Each of us goes from five to one in the draft and we spend a little extra time on three guys who make a lot of sense for the Suns — De’Andre Hunter, Ja Morant and of course Zion Williamson.

We quickly jump through all that fell apart in the Suns’ 134-107 loss in Los Angeles tonight, one of their absolute worst of the year.

The Clippers guarded Devin Booker more physically and violently than any team all year and took the scorer out of the game. No one else on the Suns responded and Phoenix got blown out for the umpteenth time this season.
