Locked On Wolves - Daily Podcast On The Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards started in Team USA's first exhibition game leading into FIBA World Cup play, and he impressed. Edwards finished tied for second on the team in both points and assists and got more shots up than any other USA player. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) discusses Ant's performance on the international stage, as well as what Team USA head coach Steve Kerr may have in store for Edwards as time goes on. Also, an interesting conversation over at The Ringer surrounding Rudy Gobert, the Wolves, and ... Josh Minott?

As Anthony Edwards tries to force his way into the Team USA starting lineup as the team prepares for the FIBA World Cup, comparisons are being made between the Minnesota Timberwolves star and 2010 Kevin Durant when he suited up for Team USA for the first time. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) goes a layer deeper and compares the first three years of Ant's career to KD's -- while there are surface-level similarities, Durant was simply a better all-around player. Still, there's plenty of reason to believe that Edwards could make a leap. Also, a look at Matteo Spagnolo's strong play overseas and an article that lists the Wolves as a potential surprise this season.

Yes, the Minnesota Timberwolves gave up a lot for Rudy Gobert and their roster is not perfect, but it isn't "confusing." Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) explains why a recent Bleacher Report article is largely off-base when considering the Wolves' roster, and why essentially every post-Gobert-trade move made by Tim Connelly has been sound. Not only that, several other teams, including Western Conference foes such as the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets, are fare more rudderless than the Wolves. Also, notes on Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns.

As of right now, does it look like the Minnesota Timberwolves are likely to be better in 2023-24 than they were this past season? Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) takes a look at a recent Bleacher Report article that sought to answer the same question and gives his thoughts on their analysis. Plus, a different article from B/R ranked the top 30 upcoming free agents in summer of 2024, and there were two current Wolves present on the list. The Minnesota Timberwolves had a plan entering free agency, and a bit part of it was improving in two specific categories -- one on each side of the ball. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) breaks down the clear areas of focus for Tim Connelly and the front office, and why the newcomers are superior to those jettisoned (Jaylen Nowell, Taurean Prince) in each of those categories. Put simply, the roster is deeper and fits together better today than it did prior to the offseason.

The Minnesota Timberwolves hand-picked Shake Milton to replace the bench production (or lack thereof) of Jaylen Nowell and Jordan McLaughlin. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) breaks down why the former Philadelphia 76ers combo guard is a perfect fit, from catch-and-shoot and above-the-break 3-point shooting skills to the ability to fit into the bench unit and the rotation seamlessly, the Wolves made a savvy addition in Shake Milton who excels at several of the areas in which Nowell and McLaughlin struggled.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are effectively replacing Taurean Prince with Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Troy Brown Jr., and the decision is a sound one. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) breaks down why Alexander-Walker and Brown Jr. are both better fits for the Wolves -- and at the same combined salary as what Prince would have made. From perimeter defense to shooting profiles, NAW and Brown are clear upgrades for Chris Finch's bench. Also, Kyle Anderson is officially playing for Team China and another Western Conference team is interested in former Wolves wing Jaylen Nowell.
