  • 2018 National Volunteer Week
April 15th through the 22nd is 2018 National Volunteer Week. We thought this would be a great opportunity to explain the many ways a volunteer experience can help in your job search.
Often individuals wonder how they have time to volunteer. Just know - - each of us can make a difference in our world; we can help others and make organizations better. The ultimate volunteer opportunity may also teach us something new!
You may be in need of updating your computer skills, or maybe it has been a long time since you’ve worked in an office situation. Volunteering at a great nonprofit could also provide you with chances to learn new computer programs, schedule other volunteers, or provide customer service on the phone or in person.
You may be in need of updating your communications skills, or how to analyze information or possibly how to carry out the plans for a project. Such skills can make you a valuable job applicant. Volunteering provides you with the means to learn those new skills, or update your current skills, in a positive environment with little or no risk. Give some of your time, and create a path to a new job!
You can find many great nonprofit organizations in Central Ohio through HandsOn Central Ohio
Or, for those outside of our community, check out Volunteer Match
Employment For Seniors has an incredible team of volunteers, including our Job Counselors, our network administrator, and others assisting in our office. Several of our volunteers have important messages just for you.

Brett: How do you define networking?
Ken: Networking, years ago, was making friends, making acquaintances and broadening your relationships with other people. In your job search, it is now a mandatory function of your strategy. The majority of people find their next job through a friend, or through an acquaintance, or through an acquaintance of an acquaintance. Through networking is where you find your next job. The problem is, finding your next job through networking is the hardest thing to do. But people have a hard time understanding how important networking can be. A lot of people are just scared to death to go into a room with other people. There are a lot of things that you can do to prepare for an event, or prepare for a professional event, that would put you at ease/
Carol: One of the hardest comments I ever had to hear from a client was when she said she was not going to beg somebody for a job. That was her definition of networking. And to turn that around for that individual was not easy.
Ken: What did you tell that lady?
Carol: We had to really turn the conversation around and stop looking at networking as the answer to all of her job searching needs, and to think of it more as a step in the process of job searching, where the real value of networking is information gathering. That she could get information from people that would help her in her job search that had nothing to do with asking for a job.
Ken: I always find that somebody who is sitting in front of their computer eight hours a day is not going to find a job. I recently read a statistic that stated the odds of finding a job online right now is the same as stepping on a golf course at the first hole and getting a hole in one before the end of the round. It's difficult to find jobs online, even though there are the highest number of jobs online right now that we've had since the recession.
Carol: So the last statistic I came across was that half of the available jobs out there are still not posted anywhere.
Ken: At one of our job networking groups, and we had a vice president of human resources at the meeting. He was from Cardinal Health. And one of the people in the meeting mentioned they see an awful lot of jobs at Cardinal Health posted online, and that person was not getting very many responses from applying to those posted positions. He stated that 85 percent of those jobs are filled internally. That's what happens in a lot of major corporations.
Brett: That leads me to the next question. Why is networking is so important?
Ken: I am a big fan of Malcolm Gladwell's book The Tipping Point, which has one chapter on networking. In it, he talks about a Harvard professor who did a study on how people found jobs. And he found out that people did not find their jobs through their strong ties,...

  • The 30-Second Elevator Speech And Your Job Search
What is a 30-Second Elevator Speech?  What do you do with it?  What do you include?  When should you use it?
Ken Lazar, Principal/Professional Recruiter at Ability Professional Network, and Co-Founder of the Sales Connection, an Association for Sales Professionals, join us in this episode to go in-depth on the what's, how's and why's of the 30-Second Elevator Speech

Brett: Let's dive right into our topic for the podcast. The 30-Second Elevator Speech. What is it?
Ken: It's what you say when somebody says "What do you do?" And what you want them to remember you by. How you want to present yourself. It's your signature speech about what you do, what you want to.
    Brett: Is it really 30-seconds?
Ken: 30-seconds is a long time. Try holding your breath for 30-seconds if you want to know how long 30-seconds is. I like to get the point across very early, in a matter of 10 seconds, so that you put a label on yourself, or you propose a question, or you start a conversation. Those first 10-seconds are the most important. Then if there is a request for more information about what you do, then it'll go on for 30 seconds. But I like it pretty short.
Carol: I think one of the biggest problems that job seekers have is that they wear out their welcome. You can get a lot in 30-seconds.
Ken: When you're done with your 30-second elevator speech or your 10-second elevator speech, the person that you're talking to should come away with exactly what you are or what you do. And it should be memorable.
Carol: This all leads to my next question. This is critical. A 30-second elevator speech, whether it's 10-seconds or 30-seconds. It's critical in a job search situation. Dive a little deeper in terms of the value of a successful 30-second elevator speech.
Ken: I founded a group called The Scioto Ridge Job Networking Group. Over the years, we had thousands of people stand up and give their elevator speech before each meeting. And several people would get up and give their elevator speech and they would sit down. And then I would say "Who in the room understands what this person does?" And if nobody could answer this question, that person has become anonymous. You really need to be memorable so people can help you. They need to know how to help you. And that will come across in your elevator speech.
Brett: And some of that would be to avoid jargon.
Ken: Yes. People get involved in their profession. That's their natural language. It doesn't mean anything to anybody outside of their profession. And the more technical that they've been in their careers, the more technical their elevator speeches become, and the more confusing it becomes to other people that want to help them.
Carol: One of the problems that I have with elevator speeches, is when they are memorized. It's almost like the person is putting more effort into making sure they are spitting out the speech than they are in terms of getting the information across as to what they can do.
Ken: You've got to be comfortable saying what you're saying. Otherwise, it comes across as artificial. You want the person to understand who you are when you're giving your elevator speech.
Carol: An elevator speech not only tells an...
