  • Central Ohio Workforce Trends and Mature Job Seekers
    Our guest is Tim Harman, Director Of Customized Workforce And Training for Columbus 2020.
    Over the past five years, the central Ohio population has grown about six percent. But job growth has increased by almost 16 percent. So job growth and population growth are certainly not matching. Tim talks about how the older workforce is affected by this change.
    Often you hear that what is good for mature workers is also good for millennials.  Commonalities of workplace needs for both groups include many things.
    Will technology affect jobs available for mature workers?
    What value is there for mature workers to pursue employment in a job of their "passion" and possibly create their own business?
    Tim also gives advice to today's 30-year-old on how to approach their career transitions into their 50's, 60's and beyond.

    - how did networking come into play;
    - how he piecemealed jobs together and continued his search for full-time employment;
    - how he used job fairs to his advantage.

  • Faith Williams, VP of Programs, YWCA Columbus, OH
    In this episode of The Successful Encore Career, we welcome Faith Williams VP of Programs at YWCA, Columbus OH. Faith completed her career as a partner with a large local law firm before moving into the nonprofit world.
    Faith talks to us about:
    Her background and the work she did at the law firm - was "law" the profession you identified when people asked what you were going to be when you grew up?
    Her educational background, and her plans for her degree.
    While practicing law, did this give her opportunity to view many types of organizations?  Did any of the organizations - or even organizations- give you a new picture of career opportunities or types of jobs that may be interesting to you outside of the field of law.
    What steps did you take in reaching the decision to leave your law practice and go into a new field?  How did the nonprofit world become your focus?
    Did you face any barriers?

  • Keep Your Retirement Savings With You
    We cover a lot of topics within our podcast, and what we are covering today is one that most of our podcast listeners probably don’t think too much about, but should - their retirement nest egg. It’s crucial to keep an eye on that nest egg while you are transitioning from one job or career to another.
    And to get a professional’s perspective on how to protect what you’ve saved, we welcome Jon Heischman, Sr. from Heischman Retirement Services to the podcast. Jon has over thirty years of experience and has provided guidance and ideas to help individuals with their retirement concerns. Developing a network of local financial service professionals has provided Jon with the ability to consult with and refer to specialists when needed for the benefits of his clients. Jon is a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA).
    You are transitioning from a position you have held for, say 10-15-20 or more years, and you have a 401K built up - what are your options to do with this?
    Same story, you have a 401K, and you are looking at going into business for yourself as an entrepreneur - what can you do with the 401K?
    Is it ever too late to start to build up a retirement account?
    Should you ever consider using any of your retirement accounts for anything but retirement use - like investing in yourself with a new business venture for yourself?
    How does life insurance come into play when you are over 50 in a career transition?
    Is Social Security a factor in this career transition?
