We also talk about Lee and Monte's experiences at Star Wars Celebration Chicago, like their participation on the podcast stage, cosplaying, and more!

In this episode, we discuss the Episode IX teaser trailer and panel as well as its title: The Rise of the Skywalker. We speculate about bendemption, Reylo, the emperor, the idea of Hux as a villain, Kylo and Rey, Reylo, whether they're training, etc.

We comment on what was said at the TROS panel at Celebration, especially some comments from JJ and Daisy Ridley and what it suggests for TROS and the Sequel Trilogy.

We also comment on Daisygate, when Daisy said some people claim Reylo is toxic and she can't get behind it as it is right now, but there's the possibility of redemption.

This audio was recorded at podcast stage at Star Wars Celebration Chicago 2019, and we take questions and comments from the audience.

This is our panel Romance: Those Ships Also Belong in Star Wars presented at the Star Wars University at Celebration on April 14th 2019.

We discuss the shipping tradition in popular culture and Star Wars, some of the history of fanfiction, fanfiction in Star Wars, and how shipping has always been part of the fandom.

We also comment on our experiences in the Reylo fandom, try to dispel some myths about shipping, and address some criticism directed towards shipping and Reylo.

The audio of this presentation was recorded by Ty and Marie-Claire, from What the Force https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLJu_UVHQDUmzewiNLs3tpA or http://whattheforce.ca/

The powerpoint presentation was prepared by Lee and Denise.

In today's episode we look at the argument that having a romance somehow degrades female heroes or female main characters. Spoiler alert: we disagree.

We discuss how a romantic arc with Kylo Ren would enhance Rey's story, and disagree with criticism that a romance would detract from her heroine's journey. Towards the end we talk a little bit about female superheroes and discuss Patty Jenkins' amazing quote about romance for female heroes.

We discuss the leaked Episode IX poster as well as the character sheet for Episode 9.

Mild Spoilers!

#epix #episodeixspoilers

We comment on what this poster means for the sequel trilogy, Reylo, and Episode IX. We discuss the symbolism of Rey's white outfit, and how it's similar to Padme and Attack of the Clones, and also comment on color symbolism for couples in Star Wars movies.

We also comment on Keri Russel's character Zorii, as well as Naomi Ackie's character Jannah, and speculate about them.

Finn is rocking Han Solo pants and we comment on his character arc as well.

What about those red troopers? They're looking good, right? We discuss and speculate what they might be about.

In this episode we analyse masculinity tropes in The Last Jedi, more specifically in relation to Luke and Kylo.

Contents:

00:00 Intro

01:48 All about Kylo

22:52 Luke! Or where's muh sweet Luke?

34:00 Little kids need a hero to inspire them, and that's the epilogue in The Last Jedi.

We discuss how Kylo Ren / Ben Solo will eventually make up for his past mistakes, find and receive forgiveness, and how/if he can repent and do penance.

We discuss the need for some kind of penance from Kylo's part and what could happen in this direction.

#bendemption #savebensolo

00:00 Intro

1:35 Vader was redeemed even after terrible crimes, so that bodes well for Kylo.

3:12 Kylo has been suffering for a long time.

6:15 Stories need meaningful character arcs, and a redemption arc needs to be meaningful.

7:48 What can Kylo do to make up for his mistakes?

8:36 Kylo needs a selfless sacrifice. Just doing it for Rey doesn't cut it.

13:16 What about the First Order?

15:04 Kylo and Leia. What role will Ben Solo's mother play in his redemption?

17:24 Luke's role in Kylo's redemption. What is going to happen in Episode IX?

19:00 Seeing some of Kylo's past and understanding his choices is important for him and for the audience as well.

21:04 Yes, Kylo commited patricide.

24:40 Kylo is machine on the outside only, in an interesting metaphor, if compared to Vader.

25:30 What about Rey? How can Rey forgive Kylo? How can Reylo happen? How is the Skywalker Saga going to continue?

34:48 Luke's sacrifice for Ben is meaningful.

36:14 What about Anakin? Will force ghost Anakin show up in Episode IX? How is Kylo's idolization of Vader going to be solved?

39:36 Nope, you can't really let the past die. Kylo can't deny the truth that is his family.

43:34 Where do we go from here? What can happen in Episode IX for Kylo Ren / Ben Solo?

48:59 On forcebabies and the future of the Skywalkers.

We look at object relations theory and attachment theory to understand how Rey's history of abandonment has led to maladaptive coping, which in turn has impacted her ideas about self and her key relationships, especially with Ben Solo.
