He is one of Jaymee's favorite songwriters and human beings of all time, a modern day mystic in the tradition of artists like George Harrison, Alice Coltrane and Andre 3000. This episode features an interview with musician/artist ZAAD AZMI, a 27 year old mentee of Jaymee's who was diagnosed with schizophrenia in his late teens. Jaymee was the Spiritual Director of a mental health treatment center ZAAD entered into in 2015, and the two began working together as clinician and patient, immediately developing creative ways of navigating his crippling diagnosis through the study of mysticism, the application of mindfulness techniques, and dedicated focus of art creation within multiple disciplines. This truly uncommon mental health approach and dynamic, rooted in empathy, radical honesty, the ability to laugh at oneself, and recovery from addiction) has spanned beyond the treatment setting the past 8 years. As a result of unconventional approaches and extraordinary means, ZAAD AZMI has achieved sanity and stabilty through his schizophrenia diagnosis. For the first time in his life, he's sharing this unique story with the world through long form conversation, rather than song.

Samuel Bercholz is the legendary founder and editor in chief of Shambhala Publications. He is a close friend and mentor of Jaymee's who is making his sixth appearance on the podcast. Ivan Bercholz is the current Vice President of Shambhala Publications (Sam's son) who has run the family business for over a decade with his sister Sarah.
This interview was conducted at the Fairmont Mirarmar Hotel in Santa Monica in Sam's suite on the 10th floor. Sam and Ivan were spending some last moments together before Ivan travels back to east to begin a year long solitary retreat, completely unplugged and out of contact with the world, including his family.
