Jamie Bowman ’80 just published her first book, Bike Riding in Kabul: The Global Adventures of a Foreign Aid Practitioner. Getting roughed up by Islamic fundamentalists, the weekly “feline sex-fest” in Kyiv, bribing Russian police to avoid jail in Moscow, sheltering under the sink (with the lizards) when the ammo dump exploded in Juba, automatic weapons training in Indiana, and that ill-fated morning bike ride in Kabul. It was a great job!
Bike Riding in Kabul follows the professional and personal adventures ofinternational legal consultant Jamie Bowman, an attorney from California, as she endeavors to update the laws of Kosovo, Ukraine, Bangladesh, Moscow, Afghanistan, Southern Sudan, Rwanda, and Afghanistan.
As seen through Ms. Bowman’s good humor and unique perspective, Bike Riding in Kabul moves with effortless charm through a fascinating array of personalities and events. It is full of exotic locations, difficult work challenges, strong female role models, and quirky characters, and explores a wide range of themes, including the important role of reform, Islamic attitudes toward a Western woman, endemic corruption, post-Cold War sentiments, and how other countries view the United States. Throughout the book, Jamie is supported by an Argentine boyfriend who helps her make sense of the crazy situations she finds herself in.
Fast-paced, funny, occasionally heartbreaking, but always wholly original, Bike Riding in Kabul captures the challenges of an American working overseas and is a story of finding the strength necessary to do the right thing, even when the consequences may be personally damaging.

I launched Lawyer Stories in July 2017 because I wanted to share the incredible stories of those in the legal profession. When I talk to other lawyers I often find myself not asking them about their cases, but rather about their inspiration and motivation along the way to becoming attorneys, challenges they have encountered and their views about the law and life.
For the past few years, I have shared thousands of stories from lawyers and law students across the globe. It has been an honor to speak with so many of you and I truly look forward to sharing more of the incredible journeys to the practice of law. I invite you to explore the many Lawyer Stories on our Instagram page and on our YouTube channel. Thank you for your support of the official Lawyer Stories®️ Community featuring lawyers and law students worldwide! What’s your story?

I know that there is a lot of negativity associated with the practice of law in general. The truth is that it is rare that client’s come to us because they are in a good place. It is often that we cross people’s paths in their worst and most vulnerable moments. Perhaps, this is in part why the 2018 Lawyer Well-Being study showed we didn’t have a lot of it. Beyond that, we work in a profession where we are continually expected to hold space for others, our own emotions have to constantly be quashed, we are expected to work unheard of hours and always win. Add to that then going home where we have children, husbands, partners, pets, parents and others relying on us with needs and expectations – and well, as you know, there are just never enough hours in a day. But we still do it and succeed day after day. The problem is that though we may appear wildly successful on the outside, inside there is no space left for us. Having been a heavy duty trial lawyer for 34 years, I understand.
