One way that you may be coping with the high stress situation of loving someone with an addiction is food. Let's face it we are exhausted, overwhelmed and under chronic stress. We are looking for ways to cope, even if we do not know it.
This is not abnormal and it is nothing to be ashamed of.
If you feel concerned or would like a shift for your emotional or stress eating. Try checking in with yourself and trying to determine what you need. Have you given yourself enough food throughout the day?
Reach in your tool box and try something else before you reach for that food.

Feeling angry tends to come with the territory of loving someone with an addiction.
It is a strong emotion and one of many. Sometimes we try to suppress our anger while other times we feel so angry but we do not even know why.
Today I will go over why it is ok to feel angry but also what holding on to that anger is doing to your body.

Days, weeks and months of stress adds up. Their addiction is adding to all of the other stress that life brings and you may be feeling that!

Last week I shared my story about how the years of unmanaged stress from my loved one's addiction caused my cortisol to be chronically elevated.
This week I wanted to share some symptoms of chronically elevated cortisol and some tips on how to keep your cortisol regulated.
Maybe try incorporating one of these tools a day !
Remember the goal is never to have cortisol at zero. Cortisol is a beneficial and necessary hormone.

Episode 4 fight or flight
Lack of sleep and loving someone with an a addiction tend to go hand and hand, unfortunately.
It seems that as soon as our head hits the pillow, our mind begins to wander.
Your body needs sleep to function and to juggle everything that you need juggle.

Addiction is a thief. It steals our loved ones away, it steals your joy and slowly it steals you.
Little by little as their addiction takes over and you become so many things that you did not even sign up for. You may realize that you do not even know who you are anymore.
I urge you to start reconnecting to yourself. Remember that your identity is not their addiction.

In the sea of our loved ones addiction and substance abuse, we neglect ourselves including our minds and our bodies. This continues to leave us exhausted and eventually to burnout
To move us out of survival mode we need to support our body in many different ways.
One of the ways is moving it. The chronic stress that we experience shows up as headaches, tension, joint pain, and more.
Stress Management is key and movement is just one more way to do this.

Hey friend! I am Tara a faith led wellness coach and I too love an addict.
For over two decades. I spent most of my time on a mission to cure my loved one from his addiction. I spent years trying to get him into rehab centers, visiting him in jail, moving him from house to house, being the go to person to try to take some burden off of my family, looking up natural ways to "cure" him, obsessing about it really. His addiction became my addiction in a sense.
All of this time I did NOTHING to take care of me. I ignored my needs. I ignored my body to the point I was completely disconnected from it. Until it began screaming out loud and made me listen.
I was stressed, exhausted and eventually burnt out. I had no idea why I had lost my resilience. Why were little things so hard. Why was a crying all of time. Why was I gaining so much weight when I had not changed anything in my eating. Why was I tired but wired. Why had I lost interest in anything that I used to love. Why was I waking up at 3 am? And eventually why could I not get off the couch.
I could not help myself it seemed let alone even think about helping my loved one anymore.
After years of prayer, study and self reflection. The reason was clear. I had focused so much of my energy on my loved one and everyone else, that I forgot about myself.
Not once did I consider what I need in order to take care of my self through while coping with his addiction.
I had no idea that self care should have been my priority. My body had had enough neglect and it shut me down.
So now I am here for you. I am here to remind you that YOU matter. YOU need self care. YOU need boundaries. YOU need to fuel yourself. YOU need to rest. YOU need all of the things that you feel that they need and more.
You need to be an ANCHOR in the sea of turmoil that addiction brings. You did not choose this. You can not control this. You can prioritize yourself though. No one else will. It is not selfish. It is necessity. It is survival.
This podcast is for you. The woman who loves an addict. Who feels she is alone in this. Who does not recognize herself anymore. Who has no peace or joy. Who feels like self care feels selfish and impossible during this season.
