Hey friend! I am Tara a faith led wellness coach and I too love an addict.
For over two decades. I spent most of my time on a mission to cure my loved one from his addiction. I spent years trying to get him into rehab centers, visiting him in jail, moving him from house to house, being the go to person to try to take some burden off of my family, looking up natural ways to "cure" him, obsessing about it really. His addiction became my addiction in a sense.
All of this time I did NOTHING to take care of me. I ignored my needs. I ignored my body to the point I was completely disconnected from it. Until it began screaming out loud and made me listen.
I was stressed, exhausted and eventually burnt out. I had no idea why I had lost my resilience. Why were little things so hard. Why was a crying all of time. Why was I gaining so much weight when I had not changed anything in my eating. Why was I tired but wired. Why had I lost interest in anything that I used to love. Why was I waking up at 3 am? And eventually why could I not get off the couch.
I could not help myself it seemed let alone even think about helping my loved one anymore.
After years of prayer, study and self reflection. The reason was clear. I had focused so much of my energy on my loved one and everyone else, that I forgot about myself.
Not once did I consider what I need in order to take care of my self through while coping with his addiction.
I had no idea that self care should have been my priority. My body had had enough neglect and it shut me down.
So now I am here for you. I am here to remind you that YOU matter. YOU need self care. YOU need boundaries. YOU need to fuel yourself. YOU need to rest. YOU need all of the things that you feel that they need and more.
You need to be an ANCHOR in the sea of turmoil that addiction brings. You did not choose this. You can not control this. You can prioritize yourself though. No one else will. It is not selfish. It is necessity. It is survival.
This podcast is for you. The woman who loves an addict. Who feels she is alone in this. Who does not recognize herself anymore. Who has no peace or joy. Who feels like self care feels selfish and impossible during this season.
