It’s our first cult story! Welcome to The Family! The Family, or The Great White Brotherhood, is a woman-led doomsday cult founded in the 1960s in beautiful Australia. It is the twisted story of Anne Hamilton-Bryne, who gained too much power way too fast and destroyed all the lives of those who followed her. Especially her precious children. She was the Messiah, and her children were to educate what was left of humanity after the apocalypse. She was selfish, vain, and evil. And her Aunties were not the type of Aunties you would want to raise your children. Listen in to hear all the sinister details. There is a reason some consider her to be one of the cruelest people to come from Australia.

High in the Sierra Nevada mountains and about an hour drive from Yosemite lies a town that time has forgotten. Bodie, California was once a thriving boom town and home to over 10k people back in the height of the California Gold Rush. It had quite a reputation for lawlessness, daily gunfights and a high amount of bad luck overall. Some would say it was a hard luck town born under a bad sign. So much in fact, that even today, there is a curse still hanging over Bodie.

You can visit this town, it is a designated California State Park but beware taking back any small souvenirs from this ghost town. There are many stories of the bad luck that comes to those who steal from the ghosts of Bodie…

We’ve made it to episode 20! And we are back for a fun one! Ready for a detailed account of being taken aboard an alien ship? There is no doubt that the story of Betty and Barney Hill left its mark on the world. It inspired the alien encounters we know today through movies and stories. Did it really happen?! Well, we lab rats think so, but we will leave it up to you! As we always do!

In 1970s Germany, 16 year old Anneliese Michel began exhibiting disturbing symptoms including blackouts, paralysis, swollen hands, blackened eyes and scary visions. After a long visit to the hospital with no relief in symptoms, her parents became convinced their daughter had been possessed by a demon.

Anneliese would be subjected to 67 exorcisms that would eventually lead to her death at only 23 years old. Kendra will review all the details of this sad case and we will discuss if we think it was true demon possession, undiagnosed health complications or religious fanaticism that went too far. Could her death have been prevented with more medical intervention? We even have audio from the exorcisms to listen to. This case did eventually land the priests and parents in court for neglectful homicide.

Listen now and decide for yourself what you think of the most documented case of exorcism known to date!

A dark episode but an important discussion! Jessica brings us the unbelievably violent and horrific case of Junko Furuta. Her sadistic perpetrators were four teenage boys. But that was just the beginning. What she endured is beyond anything you can imagine one person being subjected to.

This week, we do not analyze the root cause of why sick people do what they do. Instead, we tell her story to honor her and bring awareness. Her case may be extreme and difficult to listen to, but she is one of the many women and children preyed upon in this world and something must be done. She did not receive justice. She deserves justice. And the millions of those taken whose stories have not been told, deserve our attention.

Andrea Yates made headlines in June 2001 for one of the most unimaginable crimes, drowning her five children, ages 6 months to 7 years old, one by one in her family bathtub. Immediately, from the outside this seems like an unspeakable crime deserving of the harshest punishment possible, including the death penalty.

However, this is a case that truly cannot be judged so quickly. Join Kendra this week in discussion around the circumstances leading up to Andrea’s heinous crime. Get ready for some impassioned discussion around the pressure on women to be perfect mothers, gender roles and expectations within a family, the flawed mental healthcare system in the US and the influence religion can have on vulnerable minds.

What do all these famous tales have in common? Okay, books and movies, yes… but let’s go back in time. Way back. These fairy tales had a dark beginning, but we wouldn’t have them today if it wasn’t for two very ambitious and determined brothers. This week Jessica takes us down the windy path of the Brothers Grimm and reads us a few stories that you won’t see put out by Disney anytime soon.

We are visiting a new country this week on Lucid Lab! Kendra takes you to Russia to investigate one of the most disturbing and prolific serial killers, Mikhail Popkov, otherwise known as The Werewolf of Angarsk. From 1992-2010, he roamed the streets of Siberia looking for women he deemed as unchaste and deserving of punishment. His form of punishment? Pain, suffering, sexual assault, dismemberment and death in the most brutal ways possible.

This case will make you question many things such as who can you really trust? The scariest part of this whole story, Mikhail was a respected cop during the time he committed all of these murders!
