We round out the final episode of our Summer Forestry series with Mike Wilson the Division Chief, State Forests for the Oregon Department of Forestry.

Mike Wilson is the State Forests Division Chief for the Oregon Department of Forestry. He began his career as a field biologist working in various seasonal positions across the west. In 1992, he came to Oregon to survey for northern spotted owls for the Oregon Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Unit at Oregon State University. He spent four seasons conducting surveys and research on lands managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry before coming to work directly for ODF in 1995. He held several technical positions at ODF as a biologist and information systems specialist before moving into management and eventually into his current role in May of 2022. While he has been involved with Incident Management Teams fighting fire off and on over his career, his primary work has always been in the State Forests Division, which is responsible for delivering social, economic and environmental benefits to Oregonians.

Welcome to episode 2 of our Summer Forestry Series, featuring Thomas DeLuca of Oregon State University.

In this special episode we get our hands dirty and talk all about soil, and the importance of soil health in our forestlands, world, human relationships, and beyond!

Thomas H. DeLuca is a prominent forest soil scientist and ecosystem ecologist currently serving as the Dean of the College of Forestry at Oregon State University. His career has spanned various leadership roles in academia, including positions at the University of Montana and the University of Washington. His research has explored a range of environmental topics, particularly focusing on nutrient cycling, fire ecology, and forest restoration across different climatic settings. DeLuca holds a Ph.D. in Soil Biology and Biochemistry from Iowa State University. Over his career, he has published extensively, contributing significantly to the fields of forest ecology and soil science.

Today we talk with Amanda Sullivan-Astor, Forest Policy Manager for Associated Oregon Loggers.

We learn about her role at AOL, and discuss the 70 year Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) on the Department of Forestry Statelands in Oregon.

Amanda Sullivan-Astor serves as one of six managers for the association where she acts as a liaison for AOL’s forest contracting members with federal and state environmental regulatory agencies. She also works with partners to promote sustainable forest management across the state that enhances the forest contracting workforce and forest sector infrastructure as a whole. Amanda consistently advocates for legally sound and science-based management practices that acknowledge environmental and economic tradeoffs. She also proactively pursues new opportunities for the forest contracting sector through policymaking and program development.

Amanda is a Society of American Foresters Certified Forester and actively engaged in the Oregon chapter. She obtained undergraduate degrees in Forest Management and Forest Biology from Colorado State University and a Graduate Certificate in Forest Carbon Science, Management and Policy from Michigan State University.
