  • Chapman's Peak Hotel - Linda Nobrega
    Co-owner Linda Nobrega.
CHAPMANS PEAK HOTEL Many a drive over Chappies has ended with a bowl of crispy calamari at the Chapman’s Peak Hotel. In fact the hotel actually predates the road, having stood in its current location since the very early 1900’s. I’m delighted to welcome co-owner Linda Nobrega to the show to chat about their own history and the significant of their scenic location. Her family has been running the hotel since1977.

  • Advertising wars BMW vs Mercedes - Andy Rice
    ADVERTISING WARS
It’s a feat of spectacular engineering, and a lot of hard work has gone into making the road as safe as possible for drivers. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not still a challenging route, and over the years there have been several road accidents leading to either fatalities or severe injuries. One of them in particular stands out though, because it sparked a famous advertising war between two luxury car manufacturers. In 1988, businessman Christopher White survived an accident that saw his car plunge over the edge of Chapman’s Peak Drive and fall 100m down the Cliffside. Remarkably, he crawled out of the vehicle with barely a scratch on him. Now when Merc heard the story, they were quick to seize the marketing opportunity and used it as the basis for their next television advert. I wonder who remembers it…
Not to be outdone, Merc’s big rival BMW retaliated, with their next advert suggesting that if White had been driving a Beemer, he wouldn’t have needed any safety features because his car would have stayed on the roads…

  • Music - John Ellis
Durban born and raised singer and songwriter, John Ellis, released his fifth full-length studio album, Native, on 27 April after an extended absence from the music scene. He formed his first band, Tree63 in 1997, and fronted it as it toured the world from its base in Nashville in the United States. After a few years of living there, he returned home in 2008 and went solo in 2010, but has not written or released any new music for the past 7 years.
John has a separate career as an English literature lecturer, which he has been doing in Durban, but he's literally just moved to Cape Town where his children live. We're talking to him about the single, Be When Done, which is off his latest album.
He says blues music has it origins in West Africa. "Hundreds of years later, modern popular music is still dominated by the basic patterns of blues music, and I find it fascinating that it all began in Africa. “Native” is about identity: what might modern African, and especially South African, blues music possibly sound like?" John is also a published poet.
Single Be When Done dropped in March on all platforms. check out the song on Spotify and iTunes

  • Life Hacks - Own your own home with Tania Weich
Pippa speaks to property finance specialist, Tania Weich, about owning your own home. LIFE HACKS – OWN YOUR OWN HOME The most recent stats on home ownership tell us that roughly 35% of South Africans own a dwelling of some kind, be that a free-standing house, an apartment, farmhouse or even a homestead in a rural area. But for the remaining 2 thirds of our population, the dream of one day owning their own home might seem impossible. Many would-be buyers face the challenge of entering the market with no inter-generational support - they might be the first in their family to aspire to home ownership, and do not have the luxury of a mom or dad who can stand surety for debt or help them save for the costs of a deposit, bond registration fees and more. It might seem like a near-impossible feat to be able to make that purchase – but my guest joining us for life hacks today wants to rekindle a sense of hope that it IS indeed achievable. Her name is Tania Weich and she is a property finance specialist and former estate agent who has just published a book called “You CAN own your own home”.
