I gravitate to a wine shop’s French and Italian sections for affordable quality wines; many excellent bottles from these regions are under the $20 price tag. Your options are wide and varied if you know what to look for.

First, understand that wine doesn’t have to be expensive to be good. However, consumers often choose what they are familiar with and overpay for sub-par or not-good wine.

My advice (when looking for wine in this price range) is to free yourself from brand-name wines of the New World and venture over to the Old World. You will likely get a very nice wine at a better value.

Kousa Mahshi is a Middle-Eastern dish typically made with ground lamb and white rice. However, in an age of concern about getting more fiber and eating less refined grains and red meat, I tried my hand at these substitutes and was thrilled with the creation. Although I admit, I am not without guilt that I altered my late TaiTai’s recipe (she was brilliant in the kitchen!). But I digress; I kept her spices and the rest of the recipe intact; the dish tasted almost the same (Shhhhh!!)

Amadio Ranch, a community farm in the urban village of Laveen, just south of Downtown Phoenix, is as much a tourist destination as a local hangout. Eric and Christina Amadio established the ranch in 2010 because they wanted more acreage for their family and to give their children an appreciation for growing their food. The abundance of quality crops they were getting from their land led to giving neighbors produce, to a small stand, to a farmers market, to an entire working farm and gathering place. After you check in with the hostess, you will be within the cozy ambiance of the lounge. The fireplace, comfortable cushioned chairs, and southwest décor invite you for a pre-dinner drink. I recommend you imbibe because a proper night out should always start at the bar.

When people think of visiting Northern California wine regions, Napa and Sonoma are usually on their minds. But even further north, roughly 65 miles from Santa Rosa, up a windy road, is the eloquent Anderson Valley in Mendocino County—Pinot Noir Country, and worth the drive. Since you have to go out of your way to make this trip, you might as well couple it with a visit to the coast — another 30 miles or so up through the redwood trees. The locals call this portion of the drive ‘the tunnel to the coast.’
