The number of historic hotels, inns, and taverns in the Mid–Atlantic region is mind-blowing to this Colorado boy. Antrim 1844 is one of those many historic inns that stick out in our memorable travels during our 16+ years living in Maryland. My wife and I stayed at this gorgeous Greek revival mansion in April 2010. Owners Dorothy and Richard Mollett undertook a significant project to rehabilitate Antrim 1844, which required updates to the electrical, plumbing, and heating systems, among other work. The mansion’s grounds were overgrown, and as an avid gardener, I can tell you it was a massive effort to transform the landscaping into the beautiful gardens you see today.

Colorado has a plethora of food & wine events each year. I recently attended the Vail Wine Classic in August and the Denver Food + Wine Festival in September. Colorado is blessed with several world-class ski areas and Purgatory Resort is one of those. In the early 1980s, I had the privilege of living and working just a few miles from Purgatory. Then, in the late 1990s, my wife and I skied there for the first time. From those two experiences, it’s easy to see why Purgatory is so popular.

As Denver’s most luxury hotel, The Oxford Hotel boasts a rich and storied history. Originally built in 1891, this Queen City of the Plains superstar still shines brightly. Just two years after completion, the Panic of 1893, which closed silver mines, banks, and crippled some railroads. The Panic of 1883 brought an economic depression to Denver and threatened the Oxford Hotel. Luckily, the hotel emerged ready for more challenges.
