Lydia's Books of Terror: Horror Booktube Weekly

There are three books in here that you may have heard of! Also, one that may be new to you. Revisiting the backward bookshelf, I added one book to my reading list from there, and added another. In this episode, I get into some of the popular horror books I've picked up recently, as well as a more obscure title for fans of strange stories. I'll have a dedicated review video coming up, as well as the top books for next month. In the meantime I have gotten quite a bit of good reading done! Today I'd like to review a fun, if not light, horror by Chris Sorensen. The Haunting of Sorrow's Leap is the story of a very reluctant psychic with fading powers who is wrapped up in a sort of locked-room mystery. Similar to 13 Ghosts or Hill House, she is cloistered with other psychics for a chance at cashing out after staying a night in a haunted mansion. What this book is not, however, is a typical gothic horror story. I didn’t expect it to be a meta horror like Kill Creek, and was pleasantly surprised that it was. The cover drew me in entirely, and I had wanted to read more Sorensen after the Nightmare Room. It was a book about a voiceover actor and I really liked how the author wove his knowledge into the story. This is no exception. Light on scares and not gory at all, I hesitate to say this is cozy or a thriller; it is a tale of a haunted house, and haunted people with some very dynamic and well wrought characters. While I was drawn in by the illusion of Sorrow’s Leap as a cliffside gothic, I got so much more from this modern haunting and tale of hidden talents and strength in numbers. ✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮The Haunting of Sorrow's Leap by Chris Sorenesenhttps://amzn.to/41IhwhK#booktube #youtube #horrorbooks #horrortuber ✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Books I wrote ▹ https://amzn.to/3k20OY6▹ Music by ænorex ▹ https://aenorex.com ▹ All socials ▹ https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever🩶As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. In this video I present 13 of the top picks in horror reading coming out this month. Quite a few would be great reads for fall or late summer too, so take notes; I know I am!Often, there is a trend or style that is popular, and sometimes it is apparent. This month, there are so many varied covers that are so well done, we have a really good variety of design. And story! There are shorts, novels, gothic, folk and a little gore; all the good stuff. Here are six classic vintage horror books I'll always recommend, and will never ever part with. There are certain horror novels that never leave your mind. These ones are worn, familiar; stories you circle back to weekly in thought and conversation. They’re all vintage, all widely loved, and most of them have long since slipped into other forms and other mediums or inspired legions of writers to work these themes into their own work. What I think about is how startlingly modern they must have felt when they first appeared. These weren’t dusty relics when they were written like they are now! They were sharp, unsettling, and a little bit dangerous, and even now, they still have a way of lingering. We all strive to read books like this on the regular, don't we? This is what the goal of book hunting is. And then, some of of us wish we could write like this. These six books don't only thrill me as a reader, they are why I write... well, these and Stephen King books 🩶✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮Hell House by Richard MathesonThe Amityville Horror by Jay AnsonPsycho by Robert BlockRosemary's Baby by Ira LevinThe Stepford Wives by Ira LevinBlack Christmas by Thomas Altman#booktube #youtube #horrorbooks #horrortuber ✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Books I wrote ▹ https://amzn.to/3k20OY6▹ Music by ænorex ▹ https://aenorex.com ▹ All socials ▹ https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever🩶As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. This is a horror review of Nowhere Burning by Catriona Ward, focusing on how trauma shapes its characters and how the story feels more like a memory than a traditional narrative. This is a mainly psychological horror story that feels fragmented, links to something half-remembered that I could not find in the news...A good example of horror done well without explicit shock value; true terror and horror rooted in its core, channelled underground, and floating in the air.Catriona Ward is not only instant buy for me, but instant immersion. It helps that I love outdoors horror, and this takes place at an abandoned woodland sanctuary. Nowhere was a compound of sorts, where a very rich man did strange and dangerous things. This was another through-line for me; runaway kids. Specifically, kids running away to an abandoned place in the wilderness.Pick up a copy here: https://amzn.to/3PHdrHD✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮#booktube #youtube #horrorbooks #horrortuber Typical Books 383 - Nowhere Burning✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Books I wrote ▹ https://amzn.to/3k20OY6▹ Music by ænorex ▹ https://aenorex.com ▹ All socials ▹ https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever🩶As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. Richard Laymon wrote a lot of books, and I am sure I have read more than half of them. I have my favourites for sure, and choosing a top five is impossible so here is a Top Six... plus another one. Everyone has their darlings, and you'll not be surprised by a few usual suspects; Island, The Woods are Dark, and Cuts. These may be some people's less cherished picks too. There is no accounting for taste and for certain, tastes can change. Since I am embarking on this slow reread of my 'darlings' I thought we could take stock here and now of the top six and once I have read every Laymon on my shelf, come back and see if the lists still match. So far so good!Do you have a number one or top three Richard Laymon books? (and why is it Island?) I am sure Savage ranks quite high and I have hopes of it entering the race soon! Here is the ranking so far: https://tiermaker.com/create/lydias-b...✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮Night in the Lonesome October review:   • Night in the Lonesome October review • A r...  Island review:   • Castaway Diary of Horrors! • Island by Ric...  Cuts review:https://typicalbooks.com/cuts-by-rich...#booktube #youtube #horrorbooks #horrortuber

Over the winter I didn't get much reading done, but I sure did acquire a lot of books! Here is a quick roundup up what I read recently, and a longer chat about the horror books I now have in my library. We play a rousing game of whats-in-the-box and check out a coveted collection of papery periodicals. One highlight here is our trip to the Canadian War Museum. They have a massive artillery and vehicle collection, a piece of the Berlin Wall, a great exhibit on women in war and lo and behold, a book sale. ✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮Misery by Stephen KingThinner by Stephen KingA Town Called October by Steven VincentAll the Fiends of Hell by Adam NevillIncubi by Edward LeeSuccubi by Edward LeeY'all Aint Right edited by K. Returning after a little break, much like the warmer temperatures here: we have thirteen amazing new books to talk about. From nouveau slashers to twists on old gothics, demonic taunts and terrors, and everything in between; this month also has one of the most unexpected colour combinations.
