Damien Stevens-Todd joined Rachel and Dean for one last time on MAD Wednesday for Country Cousins, taking us through some of the amazing regional events for Victoria’s LGBTIQA+ communities.
One of those exciting events is Pride-solation, and we were joined by Claudia from Throne Harbour Country to find out all about it.
Pride-Solation is an Australian first. COVID-19 isolation has inspired 15 regional LGBTIQA_ organisations and community groups to come together online to celebrate their communities and pride in a one-off live streamed event highlighting the uniqueness of rural and regional Victoria and unify the community in Pride.
The organisations participating are, Koori Pride Network, OUTintheOPEN Festival Shepparton (Goulburn Valley Pride Inc.), Mallee Pride, Gippsland Pride Initiative, Wimmera Pride Project, Geelong Rainbow Festival (Geelong Rainbow Inc), Ballarat Frolic Festival, Castlemaine Pride, Trans and Gender Diverse Bendigo and Beyond, ChillOut Festival (Daylesford) and Thorne Harbour Country (part of Thorne Harbour Health) who will program health and wellbeing content with the event live-streamed on Facebook by LaNCE TV from 12-6pm AEST on Saturday 20th June – Each festival is programming content to highlight local artists and community members.

Spiro from MQFF joined Rach and Dean to talk about the festival winning a Time Out Melbourne’s Time In Award for Favourite Virtual Event for their Virtual Film Night.
And they are celebrating with another one, combined with it being Pride Month, with a Netflix Party screening of Pride on Saturday 13th June.
Join MQFF from 7pm, (link will be posted on their Facebook page) and the film will be paused until 7:10pm, before pressing play to allow for others to join – get all the details here.
The film Pride is about London-based gay and lesbian activists lend their support to striking miners in 1984 Wales. Together realising they share common foes in Margaret Thatcher, the police and the conservative press, as they form an unlikely alliance against a Thatcher government who’d made it an offence to teach pro-homosexual relationships in school—the age of homosexual consent was also 21 at the time, punishable by law—and branded the striking miners “enemies of the people.”

In this episode of MAD Wednesday, Dean and Rach hand over the mics to queer people of colour to share whatever they would like to on the JOY Drive airwaves.
Racism and injustice aren’t just happening in America, but in our own country as well.
They acknowledge their privilege and are using their platform to listen and learn.
