Connection is important because we all need to be loved, feel seen and have support. Connection is rooted in everything we do and healthy connections can help you build a happy, fulfilled life.
What connection is not:
*only talking about yourself
*being loud
*seeking attention
THE SECRET: Be genuinely interested in the other person!
Here are some examples of conversation starting connections:
1. Give a Compliment! This will make the other person feel really AND is the key to disarm them. They now trust you and see you as a friend instead of a competitor. This is NOT Regina George style complimenting
2. Open ended questions are the key to unlocking the other person. Actively listen and ask follow up questions that pertain to what they are saying.
3. How can I help you? People who ask this want to keep you on their radar and the other person will feel obligated to ask the same thing.
4. "Hi, I'm _________ and I don't know anyone here. How do you know _________?"
The Game Plan:
How many people do you want to connect with?
How many people do you want to have a deep conversation with?
Identify what your goal is and include that you want it to be a genuine excitement.
Pro Tip: One or two strong connections is much better than 12 empty connections.
Now keep in mind how you come across. You want to give someone your undivided attention to create the connection. Eye contact is a very powerful way to ensure that they know you are paying attention. Looking at every person who walks by shows you aren't actively engaged. If someone is doing this to you, feel free to kindly end the conversation and move on to the next.
Remember, it is important that you are willing to take the first step. It's easy to sit back because nerves get in the way, BUT this isn't being in control; therefore there is a good chance, you will not love the outcome that comes with it.
Being thoughtful goes a long way. Show that you are dependable, interested in them and a kind person. Schedule the next meeting or coffee, talk to them in between and make the effort!
The anticipation of going somewhere alone is far more scary than actually being at the event solo. Prep yourself, do some research on the people who will be there, work on your openers, smile, make eye contact and ask questions!
