  • Five Common Abuses of Power by Leaders

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well!

Maikel and I believe that the true measure of a great leader lies in how they utilize their position, power, and authority. In today's world, there are undoubtedly remarkable individuals in leadership roles whom we highly regard, admire, and appreciate. These individuals serve as strong and influential leaders who are genuinely blazing a trail, creating an impact, and doing so without resorting to abuse, intimidation, or negligence.

Unfortunately, some leaders opt to abuse their power, authority, and influence. Here are five of the most common forms of abuse we see in leaders today:

    • Drifting away from disciplines and principles
    • Believing that others owe us whatever use we can make of them
    • Attempting to fix things up rather than make things right
    • Refusing to accept that we could be blindly way off
    • Believing that people in our way are expendable

Join Rich and Maikel as we reveal five of the most common abuses by leaders today.

  • What Is Neglecting Leadership Development Costing You?

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well!

As executive coaches, we see a troubling lack of emphasis on leadership development in the business world. This neglect occurs both on an individual and company level, despite the clear importance of preparing individuals for leadership roles.

Consequently, we are facing a significant leadership crisis. Global statistics indicate that 75% of leaders ultimately fail, yet more than 60% of companies continue to spend less than $500 annually on leadership development per person. It seems that many companies prioritize things like coffee and breakroom perks over investing in a strong leadership pipeline.

It is essential to understand that leadership development is not something that can be overlooked or viewed as a luxury. Merely being appointed as a leader or receiving a promotion does not automatically qualify an individual for the role. Neglecting to focus on leadership development can have far-reaching consequences, not only for the individual leader but also for their career, their team, and the organization as a whole.

Rich and Maikel explain the high cost of neglecting leadership development in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

  • Transparency Part 2 - Remember That Time You Got Punched in the Nose?

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well!

Have you ever experienced the physical sensation of being punched in the nose? It's a painful experience that leaves you struggling to breathe and unable to concentrate. No matter how much you try, you can never fully recover or go back to how things were before your nose was broken.

But what about metaphorical punches? While not physically getting hit, we can still face similar challenges and consequences. Our pride can take a hit, trust can be lost instantly, and no matter how hard we work to regain our confidence, it never feels quite the same.

Effective leaders and communicators understand the importance of not only giving feedback but also being able to receive it. By being open and genuine in our communication, we can avoid those hurtful interactions that can feel like getting punched in the face.

Rich and Maikel hit the topic of transparent communication in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT

Transparency as a leader requires displaying honesty and straightforwardness. An integral aspect of transparency is openly acknowledging and owning up to mistakes. However, research indicates that reflecting on and learning from these mistakes can have a positive impact on one's effectiveness as a manager and leader.

  • Are You Still Swimming Near The Shore?

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well!

If someone were to ask you, "Are you still swimming near the shore?" your initial response would likely be, "Absolutely!" Venturing into deep water away from the shore can pose risks and, for some individuals, provoke a sense of genuine fear. However, in leadership, there will be times when we are faced with issues that will require us to venture into deeper water.  If you are prepared with the right mindset, skills, talents, and support, you'll be able to face those challenges and fears head-on.

A famous quote from William Faulkner states, "You cannot swim for new horizons until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore."

Rich and Maikel discuss how to face your fears as a leader on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

  • Leaders, Are You Warming Up Before Game Time?

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well!

The purpose of warming up before physical activity is to prepare mentally and physically for your chosen activity. Warming up increases your heart rate and therefore your blood flow. This enables more oxygen to reach your muscles and decreases the chance of injury.
It takes mental and emotional preparation to "get into the zone.” Dedicated time to mentally prepare in the hours before competition can increase confidence and reduce negative self-talk. It helps to have a mental warm-up routine and to practice getting into the right frame of mind even when it is not game day.

So ask yourself, how often do you prepare yourself to get into the zone before you step into the business role, and why it is crucial to have a daily warm-up routine. What are the risks of not mentally, and physically preparing yourself for your role as a leader?

Rich and Maikel talk about the importance of a warm-up routine for leaders on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

  • Dear Employees, Your Budget Has Been Cut (Revisited)

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well!

When we first published this in February 2023, it quickly became the most listened-to episode globally that we have done, before or since. Despite this, organizations are not prioritizing leadership development and training, and the situation is worsening with several organizations continuing budget cuts in L&D extending into 2024. This neglect of leadership development has serious consequences for employee engagement, retention, and overall organizational performance.

The simple fact of the matter is that globally, leadership is in trouble. Yet despite what senior leaders and organizations are reporting, very little is being done to correct the problems. Here are some of the latest facts based on global research from Gallup, Deloitte, and similar organizations:

    • 83% of companies say leadership development is crucial, yet less than 5% implement leadership development training (Based on a survey of 18,000 HR and C-Suite leaders)
    • 77% of organizations say leadership is lacking.
    • Only 9% of leaders demonstrate real versatility in their leadership skills to adapt and pivot as they work with individuals, teams, and other leaders (based on a study of over 24,000 leaders).
    • Only 25% of global leaders are seen by their teams as trustworthy, knowledgeable, respectful, and supportive. (that means 3 out of 4 leaders are truly struggling)
    • 3 out of 4 employees in the US and Canada report they currently are or were recently working with a toxic boss (see the previous bullet point).
    • 55% of CEOs recognize the need to develop next-generation leaders, yet only 11% of HR departments feel they have a strong bench of developing leaders.
    • 50% of organizations lack sufficient leadership talent. 47% predict a shortage of leadership in the future.
    • 63% of millennials believe they are not being coached and trained for leadership positions (the majority of leadership positions are now held by millennials).
    • Most people get their first leadership position between 28-32, however, the average age for first-time leadership training is not until the age of 43.

Without proactive efforts to develop and support effective leaders, organizations will continue to struggle with poor retention, toxic work environments, and ultimately, diminished success.

What’s most challenging about leading organizations today? And do these leadership challenges differ around the world? The fact is that regardless of location, leadership challenges are more similar than different.

In a study conducted by the Center For Creative Leadership, they gathered information from 763 middle- and executive-level leaders in organizations from China/Hong Kong, Egypt, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Spain, and the United States. What the study concluded was that leaders around the globe consistently face the same top 6 challenges — regardless of their location, industry, or organizational culture.
