Big hat, no cattle. This is a Texas put-down for someone who is all talk and no action with no substance of power behind their words. We see this as just another form of the Imposter Syndrome. Not only do we see this with leaders, but we see this now with entire organizations as well. Here are some quotes on this very subject:
“Trust in CEOs has plunged because it is seen as all hat and no cattle… The idea that we can talk and not do is over. The idea that we can have purpose through promises is over. Because it is going to require action to build trust.”—Richard Edelman, CEO, Edelman
“Of the Fortune 100 companies, only 56 have actually articulated what can be called a purpose or a mission.” —Janeen Gelbart, CEO, Indiggo
Both of these quotes sum up what we discuss in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

Let's imagine for a minute that you are a contractor and have a contract to build a brand-new office building. You start to subcontract the job to carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and everyone else you need to build this building. Now imagine that everyone shows up to start work and only 25% of the workers have any tools or skills centered around their craft. Even more disturbing is that the other 75% are oblivious to the fact that they have none of the tools or skills needed. Would you give them the go-ahead to start building? Not only no but H#$^no, right?
Statistics show that 75% of leaders are failing, with no tools or skills to adequately lead businesses, but we still put these people in positions where they are ultimately going to fail. So this is not an imaginary problem, but a real, proven problem in global leadership today. Not only are companies failing to provide adequate leadership development, but people are not taking the personal initiative to develop those skills needed to become effective leaders. Failing to develop your leadership is a fast track to a career wreck. Simply put, a good leader is someone who knows where their strengths and gaps are and never stops working to improve in all areas.
Rich and Maikel talk about the importance of continued leadership development and the pitfalls if you neglect leadership development on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

If only leadership development were that easy. Unfortunately, many believe that leadership development is a matter of reading a book, attending a seminar, or following the counsel of a supervisor on an annual review that says you need to be a better communicator and ranks you at a 2.5. All of these with no real guidance before, or after.
Like medicine, prescription before diagnosis is malpractice. That means that before you can start on leadership development, you must first know where you need to develop personally. Anyone who wants to move the needle toward leadership transformation must first experience significant personal transformation. You must know your strengths and gaps before you can begin the development of your leadership skills.
Starting on leadership skills before you have worked on personal development is like thinking you can race in the Indy 500 after just finishing a go-cart with your dad and driving it on the sidewalk for the first time. After all, they both have a steering wheel so should be a similar experience.
Join us on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT as Rich and Maikel discuss the importance of personal development before you start down the path of developing leadership skills.

We are in constant awe of the brilliant minds that produce the most amazing technology, architecture, agricultural, medical breakthroughs, and machines that make our world what it is today, as well as what the future will be. But does STEM skills mean that you have great leadership ability? The fact is that STEM skills and Leadership skills are not the same. If it were, we would not be seeing global leadership failing at a rate of 75%, concerns with employee retention, toxic cultures, and toxic bosses.
Just like STEM skills, the ability to be a versatile and effective leader must be learned. In the 20th CEO Survey conducted by PwC, over 8,000 global CEOs stated that today's skills battle grounds are the soft skills such as leadership, collaboration, emotional intelligence and adaptability. The least in demand - STEM skills. Simply put, there is no shortage of people with STEM skills, but there is a serious global leadership pipeline shortage.
Rich and Maikel discuss the importance of leadership skills in conjunction with STEM skills on today's episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

If you were the hiring manager looking for top leadership talent, would you hire yourself? Do you think you have what it takes to lead others into the future? Are you the tough leader with the skills who can face the crises that are inevitable in order to get your organization through successfully? This is a tough question for most to answer. It takes a great deal of humility and vulnerability to personally assess your own abilities.
The bottom line is that if you feel that you are not adequately prepared as a leader to face the challenges of the future, you are not alone. The bright side of this is that there is a way to build your skills, confidence, and talents with a full understanding of your strengths and gaps.
Rich and Maikel discuss the troubling issues of poorly prepared leaders and how to battle this disturbing trend in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

A Scotoma is a partial loss of vision or blind spot in an otherwise normal visual field. So how does this relate to leaders and organizations? The facts are based on global research from Gallup, Deloitte, and similar organizations that show that leadership is failing at a rate of 75% worldwide. These statistics are shocking and demonstrate a lack of two things regarding training and coaching new leaders. The first is obvious. It’s not happening. The second is not as evident. We call it “leadership scotoma.” Leadership scotoma is when those in leadership positions are blind to the fact that the leaders in their organizations are ill-prepared and ill-equipped to lead and are forced into roles of fakery – the essence of the Imposter Syndrome.
Rich and Maikel hope to pull off the blinders as we discuss the reason why failing to see or choosing to ignore leadership development can have a truly negative impact on both your organization and your own career.

Leaders who reward great teams, or individual performance with recognition, attention, and appreciation help to cultivate even higher levels of engagement and loyalty to the organization. This is a good thing — up to a point. It is when leaders start to derail and that reward for loyalty becomes a tradeoff, or they start to buy that loyalty with promises of future rewards that the problems start to surface. Promoting, compensating, and protecting colleagues on the basis of loyalty undermines the team and creates a highly dysfunctional climate. This is also how silos can begin in organizations. When leaders place a higher regard on loyalty than they do on team performance, they make long-term decisions that destroy the team’s ability to be successful. In turn, employees who start to believe it is only through loyalty to their leaders, and not their own experience, skills, and contributions that matter most, start to play the game and spend more time trying to prove loyalty than on achieving actual results that truly benefit the organization as a whole.
Join Rich and Maikel on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT as we talk about the dangers of buying loyalty.

HR deals with many issues in organizations. Some of these challenges include recruitment, retention and motivation, leadership development, and corporate culture to name a few. Seasoned, HR leaders with true leadership skills and talents are invaluable to any organization. However, according to Harvard Business Review, "Recent complaints about the HR function have touched a nerve in a large, sympathetic audience, particularly in the United States. The most vocal critics say that HR managers focus too much on “administrivia” and lack vision and strategic insight." Simply put, HR departments can make or break the employee experience. In our work not only as executive coaches but job coaches as well, we have seen and experienced firsthand both sides of the argument.
Rich and Maikel discuss the importance of HR leaders and the impact they can have on an organization in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

We have all sat through them. Those monotonous, ineffective, inefficient, soul-sucking meetings. They are generally led by someone who for the most part, spends the entire time talking just to hear their own voice while the team sits in a stupor staring blankly at each other. Afterward, the company wonders why nothing impactful came of all those meetings. Not to mention the horrendous cost of lost man-hours with nothing to show for it. The truth of the matter is that running an effective team meeting is not a skill that simply comes with the title. It is in fact a leadership skill that takes time and effort to acquire.
Vaughn Sigmon is the co-founder of Results Driven Leadership. An organization that provides leadership training for executives, managers, and sales leaders. Vaughn has an extensive career in both managing and training hundreds of top executives in Fortune 500 companies. Vaughn joins Rich and Maikel to discuss the importance of holding effective meetings and how they can drive success in your organization, or hold it back.

Why is it that in so many organizations, HR is viewed as the villians and not employee advocates? We all have the tendency to divide up the world into two groups: Us and Them. It's easy to make HR people the enemy; however, is it because perhaps in some instances, they are? Is it possible for a few bad apples in the HR department to give the whole HR profession a bad name? Or is it that too many executives lead HR, if they lead it at all, through fear rather than trust. They focus on keeping payroll costs down and keeping "employee issues" to a minimum, instead of setting ambitious organizational cultural goals and then hiring brilliant people to help achieve them -- and letting those brilliant people do their jobs!
Over the next few episodes, we are exploring the reasons why HR can be viewed not only as the villians of the organization, but also as leaders and employee advocates on Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.
