According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 47 million workers in the country quit their jobs in 2021 in what we now refer to as the Great Resignation. The number one reason for the mass walkout was not poor pay or benefits, it was a toxic work culture. In other words: People aren’t running to better pay or benefits, they’re running from feeling overworked, undermined, and unappreciated. A toxic work culture is by far the strongest predictor of industry-adjusted attrition and is 10.4 times more important than compensation in predicting turnover. So what did companies learn from this? Aside from the lip service provided by many companies after the great resignation, statistics show that we really didn't learn much. In 2023 the top reason for people leaving their jobs is still poor work culture.
In this series on toxic work culture, we will discuss some of the reasons for poor culture and some ways to correct the problems.

The statistics show that only 1 in 3 employees are happy with their supervisor and leadership team. That means that 66% of all employees are struggling in the workplace with toxic bosses. That is a sobering number. Dealing with toxic bosses is very stressful, and can lead to many health problems among employees. In addition, studies show that working in a toxic environment can result in increased depression and substance abuse. This means that toxic work issues can have a substantial negative impact on your home life as well.
Rich and Maikel will give you some tips on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT that can help you deal with a toxic boss.

We have all heard about them, the toxic boss. A toxic boss is a manager who demoralizes and damages the people underneath them. Their repeated, disruptive behavior drives employees to become disengaged, diminishes their sense of belonging, and takes away their autonomy and sense of purpose—all of which are vital for thriving at work. And according to surveys, it is becoming a serious problem.
Gallup’s 2022 State of the Global Workplace report found that only 33% of employees in the U.S. and Canada feel engaged in their work, a feeling that good bosses foster. Many employees reported experiencing negative emotions during the workday, including worry (41%), stress (50%), sadness (22%), and anger (18%)—a recipe for burnout.
Over the next few podcasts, we will discuss the signs of a toxic boss on Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

It is often assumed that going to college and getting that diploma, or working on a professional certificate equips people to lead. Don't get me wrong, diplomas and certifications are critical in doing your job well, or having the ability to do your job at all. After all, education is what helps to drive us forward. However, developing leadership skills and having the ability to do your job are two different sets of skills. Developing your leadership skills is what sets you apart from the pack. Don't believe us? In the 20th CEO Survey conducted by PwC (www.pwc.com/people), 84% of all global CEOs surveyed stated that soft skills are the current battleground for new talent. While STEM and digital skills are seen as important, demands are outstripped by soft skills such as adaptability, problem-solving, creativity, and leadership. (STEM and digital skills were rated the lowest in demand). In fact, these CEOs view the availability of these soft skills as the biggest business threat ahead of the speed of change in technology and changing customer behaviors.
Join Rich and Maikel as they discuss the importance of developing leadership skills.

We all know these people. In it for the title and nothing more. They want the corner office, the fancy name plaque on the door, the prestige, power, money, the list goes on. That is their business, to be that person in control. They feel as though the title alone promotes them to leadership and they could not be more wrong. These people are dangerous! Not only to the organization, but to the people that they have the responsibility to truly lead.
Rich and Maikel unpack the problems surrounding the Title Monger in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

We have all heard the stories, or been there ourselves. Putting our faith in someone that we find out later has taken us down the wrong path. Trust isn’t about whether you like someone, have a good feeling about them, or think they have potential. Trust is confidence, a belief in their reliability, and character. John Mattone's first law of intelligent leadership reminds us all to align ourselves with people who have extraordinary character and confidence.

While having a weakness in a leadership skill set may not be a positive idea, it can lead to recognition and a path to improvement. Leadership weaknesses can be strengthened and developed with consistent practice and a motivation to learn. However, too often leaders are afraid to acknowledge they have shortcomings in their leadership skills. All too often this results in poor relationships at work, micromanaging, inconsistency, a lack of awareness, and blaming others for the actions of poor leadership.
Rich and Maikel discuss leadership weakness on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.
