What many call Unity's Basic Textbook, Lessons in Truth, by H Emilie Cady, is familiar to New Thought seekers in general, and specifically within Unity. It is a book that Charles Fillmore requested her to write for Unity and was first published in 1894.

Three of Jesus' wisdom teachings or aphorisms are considered:
Don't let the left hand know what the right hand is doing. This can be a reminder to be aware of our motive behind giving.
Shake the dust from your feet. This can be a reminder of how to deal with rejection.
Don't put your hand to the plow and look back. This can be a reminder to focus on what is before us and not on what is behind us.

This episode is centered around three powerful aphorisms of Jesus which contain teachings for the disciples/apostles and those who heard them hundreds of years ago...but teachings that are applicable to us now.
Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
I came not bringing peace but a sword.
Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's and unto God the things that are God's.

Over my 53 years at Unity of Tucson...with Mary Ellen's help...about 2 times a year I would offer a Q & A Sunday service where people would be invited to write a question on a supplied piece of paper and once collected by an usher, Mary Ellen would sort, collate and verbalize the individual questions to me. I would offer an answer, unscripted and spontaneous. The service would move right along and I seldom would get to each question. Enjoy!

The teachings of Jesus seem to be almost subversive and they definitely go against the conventional wisdom. Perfect example...Love your enemies, bless anyone who curses you, do good to anyone who hates you, pray for those who persecute you. If you just love those who love you, what have you accomplished? Adding more energy to the hate doesn't get us the kind of results we deserve... a decision to love the seemingly unlovable will set into motion the effects that we want and deserve.

Jesus' teachings given through aphorisms are powerful and empowering because while they are simple, they are based on Spiritual Principle.
Resist not evil...if we are resisting anything we are adding energy to it.
Turn the other cheek... we can shift the focus away from what we don't want and toward what we do.
Go the extra mile... we take back our power when we do more than what is required of us.

This parable can be a reminder that knowing or finding the kingdom within is the result of taking responsibility for our vineyard of consciousness. Accountability to the Law of our Being is vital for our growth in spiritual understanding. Principle always works but we must work with it.
