  • Season 3, Station 1: Medical Ethics MMI | With Tom Frawley

🌐 You can now listen to our Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify & YouTube.

📢 About Making Of An Incredible MD Podcast:
Making Of An Incredible MD is the podcast for aspiring medical professionals.
Last season we geared you up with a ton of different topics and ethical dilemmas to think about in the medical field ...and on this season of the podcast we’re taking you behind the scenes of LIVE MMI Mock Stations that we run for our students who are about to sit their med interviews.

    🎓 About This Station:
Today on Station 1 we have none other than our Notre Dame examiner & Legals Director here at Halad, interviewing one of our aspiring med students, Yasmin. This is Yasmin’s first time doing a live MMI practice so bare in mind what you’re hearing is only just the beginning for her and she’ll only be getting better from here.

Before we hit record, we give each student 3 mins to read the station and they have 8 mins to respond.

Today the station that Yasmin read was this:
You are a genetic counsellor. One of your clients, Linda, has a son (Peter) with a genetic defect that may have a high recurrence risk, meaning her subsequent pregnancies have a high chance of being affected by the same defect. You offered genetic testing of Linda, her husband (Ron), and Peter to find out more about their disease, to which everyone agreed. The result showed that neither Linda nor Ron carries the mutation, while Peter inherited the mutation on a paternal chromosome that did not come from Linda's husband. In other words, Peter's biological father is someone else, who is unaware that he carries the mutation. You suspect that Linda and her husband do not know that Peter’s father is not Ron.

    🎓 About Mel & Tori:
Our two incredibly talented guests are both Deakin med students and founding team members of Skill-It Kitchen! Mel is an MD3 student at Deakin, former president of Universal Health at Deakin and it was her realisation that we all have an enormous knowledge gap about food during her first year of med school that seeded the idea of creating Skill-It Kitchen. Tori is an MD1 student at Deakin and qualified Aged Care Dietitian, who is using her background in nutrition to open up our eyes to the world of better informed, more nourishing food choices. Today, we’re talking about the unsung topic of how food waste contributes to the climate crisis and how health professionals can play a crucial role!

Ps. stick around to the end for a Deakin inspired MMI station about food, nutrition and policy.

    🎓 About Manoj Arachige:
We’ve met Manoj before in Ep.1 and he’s someone who’s pretty hard to forget for all the incredible achievements he’s made at such a young age. But just to jog your memory on Manoj, he’s a 4th year medical student at Monash University, co-founder of KIS Academics and founder of Co.doc. All of which were side hustles he started during med school. As someone, who I see with incredible patience and insight, I thought it’d be great to have Manoj back to talk about breaking bad news to patients from a med student’s view.

    🎓 About Vikram Sreenivasan:
Am so grateful that today’s guest, Vikram, was able to take a minute out of his insane ‘new normal’ schedule as a doctor serving on the frontlines, or shall we say, last-lines right now. Having trained originally in The States and India, Vikram is now practicing as a Junior Doctor at Monash Health, here in Melbourne, where he’s been placed into the Emergency Department due to our very real COVID crisis.

**We planned this episode about breaking bad news well before Melbourne went into lock down number 2 and a second wave of infections ravaged our hospitals, so this episode hopefully can give everyone a bit of context of how doctors are breaking bad news to families on the daily now during this pandemic.

    🎓 About Anna Dai:
Where do I even start with Anna? I know Anna as the fun-loving graphic-designing Co-founder of Goodie, a platform which connects volunteering opportunities with people who just want to do good. But turns out, before all that, she’s actually been a dentist for 7 years now, graduating from the University of Melbourne Dental School in 2013 and still practices today in private practice and with the Royal Flying Doctors. Having done so much at such a young age, I thought it was perfect to have Anna on for this episode on Imposter Syndrome!
