In the annals of cinematic history, few films have dared to be as rivetingly monotonous as "The Night of the Generals." This epic saga, as seen through the eyes of our esteemed viewer, Samir, is a thrilling concoction of uniformed men, shadowy rooms, and conversations so mind-numbingly dull, even the most seasoned film aficionado will struggle to stay awake.
Ah, The Founder - because who wouldn't want to spend nearly two hours of their precious time watching a movie about the man who took credit for turning a humble, innovative burger joint into a global empire? Samir, you truly have a knack for picking cinematic masterpieces.
Prepare yourselves, Paul and Samir, for an enthralling journey into the world of fast food, featuring dazzling performances by Michael Keaton as Ray Kroc and the McDonald brothers played by Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch. This film is all about the American Dream, supersized and drenched in special sauce.
Fear not, for The Founder is not just a tale of ruthless ambition and corporate greed. No, no, it also provides a charming backdrop of the 1950s and 1960s, with vintage cars, retro diners, and a catchy soundtrack that'll have you tapping your feet and craving a cheeseburger. As you immerse yourselves in this bygone era, you'll marvel at the mind-blowing idea that fast food was once a novelty, not a worldwide plague.
So, Paul and Samir, brace yourselves for an unforgettable movie night, complete with a side of fries and a large helping of sarcasm. After all, who wouldn't want to learn the twisted origin story of the golden arches? And remember, if nothing else, at least you'll know who to blame next time you're stuck in a mile-long drive-thru queue.

As Paul and Samir revelled in the cyberpunk realm of the original Blade Runner (1982), their minds thirsted for more. Eagerly, they plunged into the neon-lit depths of its successor, Blade Runner 2049, a film that resonates with the masses 🤔
Blade Runner 2049, a neon-drenched, cerebral, and engulfing sequel to the seminal 1982 sci-fi noir masterpiece, Blade Runner, helmed by Ridley Scott, catapults viewers into a dystopian future. Three decades have passed, and now it is Denis Villeneuve, the visionary behind mind-bending films like Arrival (2016) and Sicario (2015), who takes the reins. The script, penned by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, pays tribute to its origin while masterfully expanding the Blade Runner cosmos.
Los Angeles, a sprawling cyberpunk metropolis, is enshrouded in a dystopian haze, ravaged by ecological collapse, relentless weather, and staggering inequality. This bleak, atmospheric world is vital in setting the stage for the film's unmistakable neo-noir essence, echoing the original's allure.
Ryan Gosling embodies Officer K, a new breed of "Blade Runner" patrolling the grim streets for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Tasked with hunting and "retiring" rogue bioengineered beings, the replicants, Blade Runners navigate the murky boundaries of humanity. As Officer K peels back the layers of enigmatic secrets, he confronts not only his own existence but also the potential to reshape the course of human and replicant history.
Amidst the synthetic rain, a supporting cast of fresh faces and seasoned thespians bring this electric dreamscape to life. Harrison Ford reprises his role as Rick Deckard, while Ana de Armas captivates as Joi, a multifaceted character who infuses the narrative with emotional gravity. Other key players include Robin Wright, Sylvia Hoeks, and Jared Leto, each weaving intricate threads into the tapestry of subplots and themes.
The deliberate pace of Blade Runner 2049 lures the viewer into its thematic labyrinth, exploring identity, humanity, and the essence of existence. This slow-burning odyssey is amplified by its mesmerizing visual style, a synthesis of practical and digital wizardry. Villeneuve and his trusted collaborator, cinematographer Roger Deakins, craft a series of indelible, hauntingly beautiful images that etch themselves into the viewer's psyche. Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch's atmospheric score reverberates through the dystopian cityscape, conjuring the innovative spirit of Vangelis from the original film.

When it comes to iconic science fiction films, few can rival the influence and depth of Ridley Scott's 1982 classic, Blade Runner. Based on Philip K. Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?," the film boasts a compelling blend of neo-noir aesthetics, provocative themes, and a memorable cyberpunk setting. As long-time fans of the genre, Paul and Samir decided to re-watch Blade Runner and share their insights on the film's enduring legacy.
Blade Runner is a science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, and Sean Young. The film is set in a dystopian future Los Angeles in 2019 where genetically engineered replicants are used for dangerous work off-world. The replicants are illegal on Earth and are hunted down by special police operatives called “Blade Runners”. The story follows Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a retired Blade Runner who is brought back to duty to hunt down four replicants who have escaped from an off-world colony and returned to Earth.
The film has been praised for its stunning visuals, its portrayal of a dystopian future, and its exploration of themes such as what it means to be human. It has also been criticized for its slow pace and lack of character development.

Staying with the Western theme this week, Paul suggested that we review The Sisters Brothers (2018). Mixed reviews, the critics seemed to like this more than the audience. Usually that is a sign of a bad movie, guess we'll find out!
Soldier Blue (1970) was a suggestion made by Paul's dad. Having never heard of it before, Paul thought, why not review it. Samir seemed game as well. So, let's enjoy some simulated genocide!
Soldier Blue (1970) is a powerful and controversial film directed by Ralph Nelson, set against the backdrop of the American West during the late 19th century. The movie stars Candice Bergen and Peter Strauss in the lead roles as Cresta, a white woman captured by Cheyenne Native Americans, and Honus, a naive soldier of the United States cavalry.
The plot revolves around Cresta and Honus, who come together after a brutal Cheyenne attack, and embark on a treacherous journey through hostile territory. As they traverse the harsh landscape, Honus begins to question the justifications for the government's actions against Native Americans. Cresta, who has spent years with the Cheyenne, provides insights into their way of life and helps break down Honus's preconceptions.
The film's graphic portrayal of violence and its unflinching examination of American imperialism and genocide against the Native American population drew much attention and criticism upon its release. Soldier Blue's intense scenes, such as the Sand Creek Massacre, shocked audiences and stimulated conversations about the darker aspects of American history.
Ralph Nelson's Soldier Blue remains a deeply thought-provoking film that dares to confront the truth of America's past, while exploring themes of moral ambiguity, loyalty, and human nature.

A Thrilling Dive Into the Criminal Underworld with a Twist of Unexpected Casting Choices.
In this review, we'll delve deep into the dark, gritty world of "The Drop," a film that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Directed by Michaël R. Roskam and based on Dennis Lehane's short story "Animal Rescue," this film showcases the seedy underbelly of society, with a mix of deception, betrayal, and danger lurking around every corner.
Tom Hardy takes the lead as Bob Saginowski, a seemingly ordinary bartender who becomes entangled in a web of crime when he finds himself at the centre of a robbery gone wrong. Hardy delivers an exceptional performance, portraying a complex character who battles both inner demons and external threats.
Joining Hardy is the late James Gandolfini, who brings a captivating intensity to his portrayal of Marv, Bob's cousin and the owner of the bar. Gandolfini's final film role is a testament to his incredible talent, and his presence in the film adds an extra layer of depth and emotion.
Noomi Rapace, best known for her portrayal of Lisbeth Salander in the original "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy, also shines as Nadia, a troubled woman who becomes entwined in the dangerous events surrounding Bob. Her chemistry with Hardy is electric, making their on-screen relationship all the more engrossing.
Now, let's talk about the casting choices. While Hardy, and Rapace are undeniably talented actors, their casting in "The Drop" might seem a bit unorthodox to some viewers. Hardy, with his imposing physical presence, might not be the obvious choice for the soft-spoken, introspective Bob. Rapace, too, might seem an unconventional pick for the role of a vulnerable, damaged woman like Nadia. And yet, these unexpected casting decisions ultimately work to the film's advantage, adding a unique twist and keeping the audience guessing.
In this review, I'll also discuss how the film's carefully crafted plot keeps you engaged and invested throughout its entirety. We'll explore the intricate relationships between the characters, the clever use of suspense and tension, and how the film's unexpected twists keep you guessing until the very end.
"The Drop" is a film that masterfully balances thrilling action with a character-driven narrative, and it's one that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking for a gripping, emotionally charged experience. While the casting choices may seem offbeat at first glance, the performances of the actors ultimately bring depth and nuance to their respective roles, leaving a lasting impression on the viewer.

Paul, on the other-hand, has seen it multiple times. Meh 🤷🏼

Paul has yet to experience the classic war epic "Zulu" (1964), and it seems there's no better time to delve into its rich cinematic history than now, just before it potentially faces obscurity due to the demands of left-wing ideologues.
On the other hand, Samir is an avid fan of the film, finding himself utterly entranced by its rousing theme music. The reasons behind his fascination remain a mystery, but perhaps as Paul and Samir embark on this cinematic journey together, they will uncover the elements that make "Zulu" so captivating and timeless. As they explore the film's portrayal of historical events, cultural clashes, and memorable performances, they may just come to understand the allure that continues to capture the hearts and minds of cinephiles like Samir.
In the pantheon of historical war epics, "Zulu" (1964) stands tall, proudly brandishing its spears and vibrant red tunics. Directed by Cy Endfield and starring Michael Caine in his breakthrough role, this film is a triumph of storytelling, captivating audiences with a blend of thrilling action and dry British wit.
"Zulu" transports viewers back to the heart of the Anglo-Zulu War, specifically the Battle of Rorke's Drift in 1879. In this remote outpost, 150 plucky British soldiers valiantly face off against 4,000 mighty Zulu warriors. This clash of cultures and weaponry is brought to life with such vigor and authenticity that you'll feel compelled to duck as spears whizz by and bullets shatter shields.
Michael Caine is a revelation as Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead, a stiff-upper-lipped British officer who, much like the movie itself, is equal parts charming and deadly. His banter with Stanley Baker's Lieutenant John Chard often provides welcome comic relief amidst the cacophony of war cries and musket fire. Their chemistry carries the film as much as the climactic battle scenes.
"Zulu" is not just a simple retelling of a historical event; it is an exploration of the human spirit in the face of insurmountable odds. The film deftly balances moments of levity with scenes of intense emotion, allowing viewers to see the fear, courage, and camaraderie that bonds these characters together in the face of certain doom. The Zulu warriors are portrayed with respect, showcasing their skill and bravery, while simultaneously highlighting the futility of colonial conflict.
Technically, "Zulu" was groundbreaking for its time, with sweeping shots of the South African landscape that evoke the vastness and beauty of the continent. The battle scenes are orchestrated with an almost symphonic quality, as the thunderous drums of war intermingle with the rousing score by John Barry.
In conclusion, "Zulu" (1964) is a zulu-tastic experience, a thrilling and witty war epic that remains as relevant today as it was over half a century ago. With its vivid portrayal of both the British and Zulu combatants, "Zulu" is a film that transcends its era and provides a masterclass in the art of storytelling, characterization, and cinematic spectacle. So, grab your red tunic, polish your bayonet, and immerse yourself in this unforgettable tale of bravery, honor, and colonial folly.

Excalibur (1981) has Helen Mirren in it, which is why both Paul and Samir agreed to review it. We've reviewed a few films of late that have English actors in, so let's keep it going.
Excalibur is a 1981 epic medieval fantasy film directed, co-written and produced by John Boorman, that retells the legend of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table, based loosely on the 15th-century Arthurian romance Le Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory. It stars Nigel Terry as Arthur, Nicol Williamson as Merlin, Nicholas Clay as Lancelot, Cherie Lunghi as Guenevere, Helen Mirren as Morgana, Liam Neeson as Gawain, Gabriel Byrne as Uther and Patrick Stewart as Leondegrance. The film is named after the legendary sword of King Arthur that features prominently in Arthurian literature. The film's soundtrack features the music of Richard Wagner and Carl Orff, along with an original score by Trevor Jones.
Boorman's Excalibur began development as an unproduced adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. The film was shot entirely on location in Ireland and at Ardmore Studios, employing Irish actors and crew. It has been acknowledged for its importance to the Irish filmmaking industry and for helping launch the film and acting careers of a number of Irish and British actors, including Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart, Gabriel Byrne and Ciarán Hinds.
