Caligula. This week we're following on with our controversial 70s movies. Samir has never seen Caligula, despite thinking Malcolm McDowell is a talented actor. Bordering on hardcore pron, disavowed by the screenwriter and director, it's this the worse movie ever made?
Caligula is a 1979 erotic historical drama film focusing on the rise and fall of the Roman Emperor Caligula. The film stars Malcolm McDowell in the title role, alongside Teresa Ann Savoy, Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole, John Steiner and John Gielgud. Producer Bob Guccione, the founder of Penthouse magazine, intended to produce an erotic feature film narrative with high production values and name actors.
Caligula's release was met with legal issues and controversies over its violent and sexual content; multiple cut versions were released worldwide, while its uncut form remains banned in several countries. Despite the generally negative reception, with some critics also citing it among the worst movies ever made, the film is considered to be a cult classic with significant merit for its political content and historical portrayal.

Samir's pick this week, seems like his got a taste for the violent 70s! We'll be talking about A Clockwork Orange. A movie adaptation of Anthony Burgess's 1960s novel.
A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 dystopian crime film adapted, produced, and directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel of the same name. It employs disturbing, violent images to comment on psychiatry, juvenile delinquency, youth gangs, and other social, political, and economic subjects in a dystopian near-future Britain.
Alex (Malcolm McDowell), the central character, is a charismatic, antisocial delinquent whose interests include classical music (especially Beethoven), committing rape, theft, and ultra-violence. He leads a small gang of thugs, Pete (Michael Tarn), Georgie (James Marcus), and Dim (Warren Clarke), whom he calls his droogs (from the Russian word друг, which is "friend", "buddy"). The film chronicles the horrific crime spree of his gang, his capture, and attempted rehabilitation via an experimental psychological conditioning technique (the "Ludovico Technique") promoted by the Minister of the Interior (Anthony Sharp). Alex narrates most of the film in Nadsat, a fractured adolescent slang composed of Slavic languages (especially Russian), English, and Cockney rhyming slang.

Paul's pick this week. A very standout film due to its increasing tension, difficult to watch scenes, and lingering questions that remain after watching it. A worthwhile watch for everyone.
Straw Dogs is a 1971 psychological thriller film directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring Dustin Hoffman and Susan George. The screenplay, by Peckinpah and David Zelag Goodman, is based upon Gordon M. Williams's 1969 novel, The Siege of Trencher's Farm. The film's title derives from a discussion in the Tao Te Ching that likens people to the ancient Chinese ceremonial straw dog, being of ceremonial worth, but afterwards discarded with indifference.
The film is noted for its violent concluding sequences and two complicated r*pe scenes, which were censored by numerous film rating boards. Released theatrically in the same year as A Clockwork Orange, The French Connection, and Dirty Harry, the film sparked heated controversy over a perceived increase of violence in films generally.

Samir talks about Nine 1/2 Weeks (1986). Does it still hold up to it's 80s explicit nature, or would it make modern audiences flesh creep?
9½ Weeks is a 1986 American erotic romantic drama film directed by Adrian Lyne, and starring Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke. Basinger portrays a New York City art gallery employee who has a brief yet intense affair with a mysterious Wall Street broker, played by Rourke. The screenplay by Sarah Kernochan, Zalman King and Patricia Louisianna Knop is adapted from the 1978 memoir of the same name by Austrian-American author Ingeborg Day, under the pseudonym "Elizabeth McNeill".
The film was completed in 1984, but did not get released until February 1986. Considered too explicit by its American distributor Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film was heavily edited for release in the United States, where it was a box office bomb, grossing $6.7 million on a $17 million budget.
It also received mixed reviews at the time of its release. However, its soundtrack sold well and the film itself became a huge success internationally in its unedited version, particularly in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, making $100 million worldwide. It has also acquired a large fanbase on video and DVD and has developed a cult following.

The Long Good Friday, starring the iconic actor, Bob Hoskins. Considered one of the UKs greatest ever films, loved by critics, praised by viewers, and Paul has never seen it 😬
Let's dive in and see what all the fuss is about!
The Long Good Friday is a 1980 British gangster film directed by John Mackenzie from a screenplay by Barrie Keeffe, starring Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren. Set in London, the storyline weaves together events and concerns of the late 1970s, including mid-level political and police corruption, and IRA fund-raising. The supporting cast features Eddie Constantine, Dave King, Bryan Marshall, Derek Thompson, Paul Freeman and Pierce Brosnan in his film debut.
The film was completed in 1979, but because of release delays, it is generally credited as an ‘80s film. It received positive reviews from critics, and Bob Hoskins was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and won a Evening Standard Film Award for his performance as gangster Harold Shand. It was voted at number 21 in the British Film Institute's Top 100 British films list, and provided Hoskins with his breakthrough film role. In 2016, British film magazine Empire ranked The Long Good Friday number 19 in its list of The 100 best British films.

Paul talks about Alex Garland's, Men (2022). Paul doesn't usually watch Horror/Scary films, but something about Men (2022) really was intriguing. The story was wrapped up in symbolism, and quite generally quite esoteric, this isn't a film for everyone. Paul does his best to explain why.
Men is a 2022 British folk horror film written and directed by Alex Garland. It stars Jessie Buckley as a widowed woman who travels on holiday to a countryside village but becomes disturbed and tormented by the strange men in the village, all portrayed by Rory Kinnear. The film was released in the United States on 20 May 2022 by A24 and in the United Kingdom on 1 June 2022 by Entertainment Film Distributors. It received generally positive reviews for its performances, though its narrative approach received some criticism.

Gladiator (2000) was Samir's pick this week. Considered a Ridley Scott classic, does it still stand up after 20 plus years, or will we find fault with a little Aussie running around in the sand?
"Gladiator" is a historical epic film directed by Ridley Scott and released in 2000. It stars Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman general who is betrayed and enslaved, eventually becoming a gladiator fighting in the arena. The film also stars Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus, the Emperor who betrayed Maximus and took the throne, and Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, Commodus' sister who is torn between her loyalty to her brother and her admiration for Maximus.
The film's historical accuracy is debated, but it draws heavily on the themes and motifs of ancient Roman culture, as well as gladiatorial games and spectacles. The film was a commercial and critical success, winning five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe.
"Gladiator" is considered a classic of the epic genre, known for its thrilling battle scenes, powerful performances, and thought-provoking themes of power, vengeance, and the human condition. Its impact on popular culture can still be felt today, inspiring numerous other historical epic films and video games, as well as cementing Russell Crowe's status as one of Hollywood's leading men.
In conclusion, "Gladiator" is a landmark film that stands the test of time, captivating audiences with its epic tale of a man fighting for justice in a brutal and corrupt world.

Samir tells us about The St. Valentine's Day Massacre... and also some stuff about the 1967 movie, starring Jason Robards as Al Capone.
The St. Valentine's Day Massacre is a 1967 American gangster film based on the 1929 mass murder of seven members of the Northside Gang (led by George "Bugs" Moran) on orders from Al Capone. The picture was directed by Roger Corman, written by Howard Browne, and starring Jason Robards Jr. as a remarkably slender Capone, Ralph Meeker as Moran, George Segal as Peter Gusenberg, and David Canary as Frank Gusenberg.
Corman, better known as a director and producer of low-budget B movies, was given his largest budget to date (estimated at $2.5 million) and the backing of 20th Century Fox to realize what he described as "the most accurate, authentic gangster film ever". With a voiceover narration by Paul Frees, the film depicts in detail the events leading up the massacre in a docudrama-style, with many authentic historical details.
