This week on Man Up, Joe Stopulos is joined again by his brothers Pete and Tim for part two of their tribute to their late father, Mike Stopulos. After last week's biographical look at Mike's life, this episode turns to the lessons: what did their dad actually do that made him the kind of man an entire community showed up to grieve?
The brothers walk through it lesson by lesson:
Be there — Mike coached freshman basketball at Assumption High School (earning the nickname "Papa Stop"), showed up for backyard football and homework, and made sure his kids never felt his absence even during years of financial strain he never mentioned.

Take calculated risks — from proposing to their mother six months into dating, to launching side businesses, to investing in Airbnb properties with his sons during the pandemic, Mike modeled fearless but thoughtful risk-taking that paid off far beyond money.

Order your life rightly — faith first, then family (wife before kids), then work, then friends. The brothers share how Mike's sacrificial love for their mother, especially through her health struggles, shaped how they lead their own households today.

Pour out love on everyone — stories pour out about Mike's daily visits to a local Starbucks and grocery store, his habit of embracing a disfigured cart-pusher by name, and quietly slipping strangers at Walmart one hundred dollars with no explanation.

Fear no one — from cracking jokes with hospital staff during his final weeks to evangelizing nurses about their faith, Mike lived out the Gospel call to approach every person without fear or judgment.

A model Catholic death — the episode closes with the family's account of Mike's final hours: receiving anointing, an apostolic blessing, and communion, then passing peacefully as his six children prayed a rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet at his bedside.

In this first installment of a multi-part tribute series, Joe Stopulos sits down with his brothers Pete and Tim to remember their father, Mike Stopulos, who passed away recently and left an outsized mark on his family and community.
The brothers trace Mike's story from the beginning: a free-range 1950s and 60s childhood in Davenport, Iowa, where kids rode a school bus ten miles out to the Davenport Country Club to golf unsupervised all day. They talk about his unlikely walk-on stint on the University of Iowa football team, and the famously fast romance with their mother — engaged just six months after they met while he was coaching her women's softball team.
From there, the conversation moves into the pillars of Mike's life: raising six kids born between 1980 and 1990, an unwavering commitment to Catholic schooling, daily faith, never missing Sunday Mass or a holy day of obligation, and consistent family dinners despite a demanding career. The episode also covers his entrepreneurial path — from Lindsey Digital Prepress, to opening Bixby's Bagels and Malley's Pizza, to launching a second career in employee benefits consulting at age 49 alongside Andy Butler, a business he worked in until his final days.
The episode closes with a glimpse of the overwhelming turnout at Mike's visitation and funeral — a line that ran hours past its scheduled end — as a testament to the life he lived. Part two of this tribute series continues next week, diving into the specific lessons in faith, work, and fatherhood that Mike passed down to his sons.

This week on Man Up, Joe Stopulos shares the second and final part of his Heroic Fatherhood conversation with his father, Mike Stopulos — an interview recorded a couple of years ago and aired now in his memory. Where Part 1 traced the men who shaped Mike (his own father, Jim "Papa Jim" Stopulos, and his father-in-law, Carl Liebscher), Part 2 turns to Mike's own fatherhood: raising six kids, leading a family through faith, and the long view that only grandchildren can give. Why Mike and his wife, Mary Fran, decided she would step away from a thriving career at John Deere — where she worked as an actuary on a management-science track and out-earned him — to stay home with the kids, and the generational blessing that one hard decision created.

June 22Heroic Fathers Revisited Part 1: A Treasured Interview With My Late Father on Faith, Family, and the Men Who Shaped Him - Mike Stopulos
This week on Man Up, Joe Stopulos revisits one of the most meaningful conversations he has ever recorded: an interview with his own father, Mike Stopulos, taped during the original Heroic Fatherhood series. Following Mike's recent passing, this episode has become a cherished keepsake, and Joe opens with a heartfelt encouragement to listeners: if you are blessed to still have your parents or grandparents, grab a microphone, sit down with them, and ask them about their lives. Those recordings become priceless.
In this first of a two-part conversation, Mike looks back on the two heroic men who modeled fatherhood for him:
His father ("Papa") — the son of a Greek immigrant who grew up in poverty, served as a B-17 pilot in World War II, and built and ran movie theaters across the Quad Cities, open 364 days a year. Mike remembers his relentless work ethic, his hopeless optimism, his lack of any prejudice, and above all his total devotion to his wife, which only deepened as she battled Alzheimer's. He lived to 100.

His father-in-law, Carl Liebscher ("Gopa") — a steady, God-centered father of eight who moved his entire life from New Braunfels, Texas to Davenport, Iowa simply to make his wife happy. Mike shares two pieces of advice that stuck with him for life: that unless something is keeping your children from getting to heaven, it isn't worth worrying about, and that a heavy load gets much lighter when there are many shoulders to help carry it.
Running through both men is the same thread Joe returns to again and again on the show: the servant leader who puts faith first, his wife next, and family at the center of everything. As Joe reflects, his confidence in speaking about fatherhood comes not from being a perfect father himself, but from witnessing three great ones up close.
Part two airs next week, when Joe and his father turn to Mike's own approach to fatherhood and how he raised his family.

Part 2 of Joe Stopulos's Uncommon Good interview with Dr. Bud Maher picks up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Joe is studying at Marquette University — attending daily Mass during Lent (sometimes before the bar closed), seeking out every Jesuit professor he could find, and slowly beginning to ask why the Church teaches what it teaches.
Highlights include:
College Faith in the Real World: Joe reflects on attending a 10 p.m. Sunday Mass while most of his friend group wasn't practicing. He describes going to daily Mass every day of Lent in college — including a legendary St. Patrick's Day that started at 5:50 a.m. outside a bar and still included 6:30 a.m. Mass. A perfect encapsulation of where he was spiritually.

Meeting His First Protestant at 25: A friendship with a Methodist minister friend forced Joe to actually articulate why Catholics do what they do — confession, the sacraments, all of it. He couldn't answer from Scripture. That sent him to CatholicAnswers.com, and every answer he found only deepened his conviction.

Father John Ricardo Changes Everything: Introduced to Iowa Catholic Radio through friend John Leonetti (whom Joe famously told "nobody listens to Catholic radio"), Joe started tuning in to Father Ricardo at 11 a.m. and never stopped. He began burning CDs of Ricardo's talks to hand out. Combined with Jeff Cavins' Bible Timeline study and Scott Hahn's The Lamb's Supper, this launched a roughly 24-month transformation that Joe describes as the turning point of his adult faith.

The Origin of Man Up: Joe shares how his early on-air appearances during Iowa Catholic Radio fundraisers eventually led to a standing show — made possible, he says, by the theological confidence and credibility of his original co-host, Father Zach. Now approaching 10 years and 400+ episodes, Man Up remains one of the network's cornerstone programs.

Life at the Basilica of Saint John: Joe talks about the thriving parish community at Saint John's Basilica in Des Moines, the pastoral transition from the beloved Father Quinn to Father Trevor Sequin, and why surrounding yourself with friends striving for virtue is one of the three most important decisions a man can make.

In one of the most personal episodes of Man Up to date, host Joe Stopulos opens by sharing that his father — the self-described hero of his life — recently passed away after a swift battle with cancer. The interview featured in this episode was recorded on February 6th, the very morning Joe's family received word of his father's diagnosis, making its content — a deep dive into Joe's Catholic upbringing — all the more poignant and powerful.

A Cradle Catholic Story: Joe, the fourth of six children, grew up in a large Catholic family in Davenport, Iowa, attending Catholic grade school, high school, and college (Marquette University). He reflects on what it meant to be the "big family" at school and how normalcy around the faith was established early.

The Role of the Father: Joe makes a compelling case — backed by statistics — that as the father goes, so goes the family. He shares how watching his dad pray silently at Communion left a lasting impression, and how his father's consistent Mass attendance (never missed a single one) shaped all six Stopulos children, all of whom remain in the faith today.
