运气，我们也可以管它叫运势，指的是最近这一段时间的运气怎么样。

运势。

运势这个东西可是挺虚的，让人摸不着也看不着，可是很多人都很信它。

在中国，有一些人会去找一些人来算命。

算就是calculate 命，就是命运。

所以算命，有点像是 calculate your destiny 来预测你的命运。算命。

这些人呢，我们管他们叫算命先生。

算命先生也就是来帮我们算命的这些人。

或者有一些人还会叫他们“大仙儿”。

找一位大仙儿来算一卦。

“卦”指的就是八卦。

八卦里面有阴和阳。

那么八卦到底准不准呢？

算命先生能不能告诉我们，我们的运势究竟会是怎么样的呢？

我也说不好。

其实我以前也去找算命先生算过卦。

我当时问他，我能不能顺利地考上大学，算命先生说可以，而且离家会比较远。

结果我去的大学的确还离家挺远的，我不知道这个是和他说的话有关系吗？也可能只是巧合吧。

今天我的爸爸出去和朋友一起聚餐了。

聚餐就是gathering 聚餐

一起吃饭的意思。

他们在一起吃饭，通常都会喝酒。

而他们喝的酒一般会喝白酒。

白酒是什么酒呢？

白是white，酒是wine，那白酒难道是white wine？

是我们说的白葡萄酒吗？

不是的，其实白酒指的是Chinese wine, 是中国特有的一种酒。

它也不是用葡萄做的，而是用高粱做的。

高粱sorghum 高粱，所以白酒也就是高粱酒。

这种酒呢，酒精度数还挺高的，低的一些大概在三十度左右。

最常见的酒精度数是四十多度，或者五十多度。

而高的可以达到六十多度。

人们在喝酒的时候会用一种特别的计量单位：“两”和“斤”。

一斤等于半公斤，公斤就是kilogram。

所以一斤等于half kilogram 一斤。

而两呢？

一斤等于十两，所以“两”是一个更小一点的计量单位。

通常人们会说：“我能喝五两”“我能喝一斤”来表示自己的酒量。

或者大家会说：“我已经喝了三两了，不能再喝了，再喝就多了。”

诶，这个人一听，酒量可能不太好，像我一样。

大家觉得如果自己来喝白酒的话，能喝几两或者能喝几斤呢？

Today, my dad went out and had a gathering with his friends.

聚餐 means gathering. 

Meaning having a meal together

(When) they have a meal together, usually they would drink.

And the alcohol they drink usually is 白酒.

What is 白酒?

白 is white, 酒 is wine，don't tell me 白酒 is white wine？

Is it the white wine made with grapes that we're talking about?

No. Actually, 白酒 refers to Chinese wine (Chinese Baijiu), a *wine that is specifically Chinese,

It is not made with grapes but sorghum.

Is 白酒 is actually sorghum liquor (kaoliang liquor)

For this kind of liquor, the alcohol content is quite high. The low ones would be about 30%. 

The most common alcohol content is 40 plus %, or 50 plus %.

The high ones could reach 60 plus %.

When people drink they would use a special calculation unit: tael and catty.

One catty equals half a kilogram (kg).

So, one catty equals half a kilogram. 

What about tael?

One catty equals 10 taels. So, catty is a smaller unit of calculation.

Usually, people would say, 'I can drink 5 taels', 'I can drink 1 catty' to show how much they can drink.

Or people would say, 'I've had 3 taels already; can't drink anymore or it's too much'.

Ah? This guy sounds like he might not be able to drink a lot, just like me.

今天早上我去上班的时候，因为起床起得有点晚，所以我不得不打车去上班。

这样可以让我快一点到上班的地方。

打车，哎？打不是beat，不是“打别人”的那个打吗？

我为什么要打车呢？

其实打车的意思就是take taxi 打车。

我有的时候会选择打车去上班，因为会比起坐公共交通工具快很多。

公共交通工具就是public transport。

现在打车的话基本上有两种方法，第一种就是普通的、最传统的方法。

也就是站在路边见到有空车就向它招手。

空车就是vacant taxi。

空指的是empty，所以空车empty taxi。

另外一种方法就是使用一些手机上的软件，也就是apps 软件，或者叫它们 A P P。

在手机上也可以直接约到一些出租车。

那么这些出租车我们可以叫它们“网约车”。

网上来预约的车，网约车。

现在因为网约车非常方便，而且他们的服务也通常比较好，所以变得越来越受欢迎了。

This morning when I went to work, as I got up a bit late, I had no choice but to "beat a car" (take a taxi) to work. This way allows me to get to my workplace quicker. 打车 ("Beat a car"?) Isn't 打 the same as in "bearing others" “打别人”? Why would I "beat a car"? Actually, 打车's meaning is to take a taxi. I sometimes choose to take a taxi to work, because it'd be way faster in comparison with taking public transport. 公共交通工具 means public transport. 

There are basically 2 ways to take a taxi. The first one is the normal, the most traditional way.  That is, standing by the road and wave for vacant taxis when you see them. 空车 means vacant taxi. 空 refers tp empty. So empty taxis. 

Another way is to use some apps on mobile phones. That is, apps, 软件, or call them A P P. On phone, (you) can also directly book a few taxis. So, for these taxis, we call them "online ride-hailing vehicles". Vehicles that are hailed through online booking. Nowadays, as these vehicles are very convenient, and their services are usually better, they became more and more popular.

最近我非常想吃点心。

点心是什么呢？在中文里面点心有两个意思.

在中国的北方,一般点心指的是dessert。

所以点心指的是一些甜的东西。

而在中国的南方，点心指的就是我们常听的dim sum 点心。

这一类的点心多种多样，有非常多不同的种类。

通常情况下，人们会选择在上午或者中午来吃点心。

有一些老人家可以在吃点心的地方,边读报纸边喝茶，边吃点心,就这样度过一整个上午。

同时他们还会和自己的朋友聊天,所以吃点心也是他们休闲的一种方法。

常见的点心有哪些种类呢？

他们可以是蒸的。

蒸的就是steamed。

也可以是炸的。

炸的就是fried。

蒸的点心，比较常见的有烧麦。

烧麦是一种猪肉做的点心。

还有虾饺。

虾饺就是用虾做的小饺子一样的东西，like a small shrimp dumpling，虾饺。

我自己非常喜欢吃这一类的点心，因为每一种食物都比较少。所以我可以一次吃很多不同种类的食物。

Lately, I wanted to have dim sum very much. What is dim sum? In Chinese, there are two meanings for dim sum. In Northern China, generally dim sum refers to dessert. So, dim sum refers to something sweet. On the other hand,  in Southern China, dim sum refers to what we hear all the time, dim sum.

This kind of dim sum is various, consisting of different types. Under normal circumstances, people could choose to have it in the morning or in the afternoon. Some elders could spend their whole morning at the dim sum places, reading newspapers while having tea, and having dim sum at the same time. Meanwhile, they would chat with their friends, so having dim sum is also a way of their leisure.

What are the common dim sum types? They could be steamed. Also (they) could be fried. For steamed dim sum, shumai is relatively common. Shumai is a kind of dim sum made with pork. Also, har gow is a kind of small dumplings made with shrimps. I personally like these kinds of dim sum very much, as each of the food is relatively little. Therefore, I could have different kinds of food at once.

昨天我在给学生上课。

我给她上的是晚课，晚课就是在晚上上的课。

我们开始上课的时间是晚上七点钟，结束的时间是晚上九点钟，一共两个小时。

在上课的时候，出于好奇，好奇就是curious。

出于好奇呢，我就问了她平时在学校需要学习几个小时。

她跟我说，早上八点她就要开始上学了，中午十一点半的时候暂停学习，开始吃午餐。

下午两点左右再开始上课，一直上到晚上十点钟才结束。

从早上八点一直到晚上十点，她不停地在学习。

在晚上，从六点左右开始，她要开始上自习。

自习就是self studies，自己学习。

所以她需要自己决定那四个小时她要学些什么内容。

她需要这样每天学习很长时间，一个星期上五天学，这可真是太辛苦了。

有时她还需要在晚上跟学校请假。

请假，就是seek leave 

请假来上我的语言课，所以她每天真是忙到不得了。

Yesterday, I was having a lesson with a student. I am having an evening class with her. 晚课 means the classes in the evening. The time was 7 in the evening when we started the class. The ending time is 9 in the evening, 2 hours in total.

While having the class, out of curiosity (because I was curious), I asked her how many hours she usually needed to study at school. She told me she had to start school at 8 in the morning. The studying pauses at 11:30 *in the afternoon, and started having lunch. Around 2 in the afternoon, the class would start again, finishing at 10 in the evening. From 8 in the morning to 10 in the evening, she keeps on studying.

In the evening, starting around 6, she needs to start the self-studies. 自习 means self-studies, studying by oneself. So, she needs to decide by herself what to study during those 4 hours. She needs to study for a long time like this every day. Going to school 5 days a week. This is really

exhausting. Sometimes, she even needs to seek leave from school. Seeking leave to come to my language class. Therefore, she truly is very busy every day.
