  • 240: Safi Bahcall | Winning Wars, Curing Diseases and Transforming Industries
Safi Bahcall is the author of Washington Post's "10 Leadership Books to Watch for in 2019", Adam Grant's "19 New Leadership Books to Read in 2019" Loonshots: How to Nurture the Crazy Ideas That Win Wars, Cure Diseases, and Transform Industries!

Safi is a second-generation physicist (the son of two astrophysicists) and a biotech entrepreneur.
He received his BA summa cum laude from Harvard and his PhD in physics from Stanford, where he worked with Lenny Susskind in particle physics (the science of the small) and the Nobel laureate Bob Laughlin in condensed matter physics (the science of the many). He was a Miller Fellow in physics at UC Berkeley (the school of the many). After working for three years as a consultant for McKinsey, Safi co-founded a biotechnology company developing new drugs for cancer. He led its IPO and served as its CEO for 13 years.
Safi has presented at approximately 130 banking conferences, investor events, and medical meetings around the world, as well as at leading academic institutions including physics, mathematics, or medical departments at Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, UC Berkeley, Caltech, Cornell, Bell Labs, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, Rockefeller, and the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.

What do James Bond and Lipitor have in common? What can we learn about human nature and world history from a glass of water?

In Loonshots, physicist and entrepreneur Safi Bahcall reveals a surprising new way of thinking about the mysteries of group behavior that challenges everything we thought we knew about nurturing radical breakthroughs.

Drawing on the science of phase transitions, Bahcall reveals why teams, companies, or any group with a mission will suddenly change from embracing wild new ideas to rigidly rejecting them, just as flowing water will suddenly change into brittle ice. Mountains of print have been written about culture. Loonshots identifies the small shifts in structure that control this transition, the same way that temperature controls the change from water to ice.

Using examples that range from the spread of fires in forests to the hunt for terrorists online, and stories of thieves and geniuses and kings, Bahcall reveals how this new kind of science helps us understand the behavior of companies and the fate of empires. Loonshots distills these insights into lessons for creatives, entrepreneurs, and visionaries everywhere.

Over the past decade, researchers have been applying the tools and techniques of phase transitions to understand how birds flock, fish swim, brains work, people vote, criminals behave, ideas spread, diseases erupt, and ecosystems collapse. If 20th-century science was shaped by the search for fundamental laws, like quantum mechanics and gravity, the 21st will be shaped by this new kind of science. Loonshots is the first to apply these tools to help all of us unlock our potential to create and nurture the crazy ideas that change the world.

    What You Will Learn:

    - What capacity building is and how it can change your life
    - The four elements of capacity building and why they matter: Spiritual, Intellectual, Physical and Emotional
    - How to harness your Spiritual Capacity, discover your core values and align to them in your daily actions.
    - How you can build your Intellectual Capacity by setting goals, developing good routines and alearning continuously.
    - Why anybody, regardless of age or fitness, can improve their performance by building their Physical Capacity.
    - The way Emotional Capacity affects everything we do, and how important the quality of relationships and management of emotions are to your performance.

    Note from the author:

This journey started with an email.

In late 2015, I started sending an email to my team each Friday. While the subject varied each week, the unifying themes were inspiration, high-performance and the courage to push limits and achieve. To my surprise, my colleagues started telling me how much they looked forward to the email each week, and said that they were forwarding it to friends and family as well. I decided to expand the email to my entire network, and Friday Forward was born.

Even more surprising, writing the Friday Forward brought me greater clarity on my purpose and my values. I discovered my passion for helping others be their best selves, and unlocking successes that previously seemed inaccessible. In particular, I was drawn to the concept of self-improvement, and I learned in order to achieve anything worth pursuing in life, we first need to build our capacity.

Once I dedicated more thought and research to the idea of capacity building and came to realize that there are four elements of capacity building: Spiritual, Intellectual, Physical and Emotional. Each individual person is stronger in some of these areas than in others, but elevating your performance requires you to build all four capacities, simultaneously.

Elevate is a guide to how to build those four capacities. After introducing the concept of capacity building itself, the book takes an in-depth look at each of the four capacities, explaining why they matter, how they lead directly to achievement, and actionable steps to improve in each of the four elements.

Elevate is not a book of theories or abstract concepts. This is intended for people who are dedicated to achieving elevated performance in both life and business. I hope you will join this journey.

  • 236: Bill Cummings | The American Billionaire Philanthropist Story
Bill Cummings and his wife Joyce move philanthropy through the Cummings Foundation, one of the largest charitable foundations in New England. The foundation has given away more than $200 million in the Greater Boston area and also manages several subsidiaries, including the nonprofit New Horizons retirement communities. The couple are Giving Pledge signatories.

Bill Cummings graduated from Tufts University. In the 1960s, Cummings paid $10,000 for his first business, a company that supplied fruit punch to colleges and health care institutions, and eventually sold it for more than $1 million. He was the publisher of several community newspapers. Cummings went on to create Cummings Properties in Woburn, Massachusetts, outside Boston. That commercial real estate business, which began in 1970 with one small building, now boasts 11 million square feet in nearly a dozen communities north and west of Boston.

Nearly all the buildings managed by Cummings Properties are owned by and operated for the benefit of the Cummings Foundation, which Bill and Joyce Cummings established in 1986. When the couple established the foundation, they pledged to give 10 percent of their income each year to it. Over time, however, they committed most of the family's commercial real estate holdings to the foundation. With nearly $2 billion in assets, it's now one of the largest foundations in New England.

The foundation has a strong focus on Greater Boston and about a dozen communities north or west of the city. Grants go to charities aiding the community through education, healthcare, human services, and social justice programs.

Grantees include Brazilian Worker Center, Artists for Humanity, Boston Shakespeare Project, Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, The Children’s Center of Methuen, Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester, Catholic Charities of Boston, and Winchester Music School. Cummings has been a major donor to his alma mater Tufts University, home to the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine.

The foundation runs several subsidiary programs. The Institute for World Justice supports the "post-genocide recovery and rebuilding of Rwanda," and uses "education to help prevent future genocides and other intercultural violence and injustices there and elsewhere." The foundation also developed New Horizons retirement communities in Massachusetts.

Cummings is in his 80s and his giving is going strong. Through the years, the foundation's circle of leadership has broadened beyond family members and now two-thirds of the foundation's trustees come from outside the family or business. Look for even more community involvement down the line.

Alex Banayan is the only nationally bestselling business author under 30 in America. His book The Third Door: The Wild Quest to Uncover How the World’s Most Successful People Launched Their Careers has been translated into more than a dozen languages. Over the course of his unprecedented seven-year journey, Banayan interviewed the most innovative leaders of the past half-century, including Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, Larry King, Maya Angelou, Steve Wozniak, Jane Goodall, Jessica Alba, Quincy Jones, and more.

The day before his freshman-year final exams, Banayan hacked The Price is Right, won a sailboat, sold it, and used the money to fund his larger-than-life adventure. Since then, Banayan has been named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list, Business Insider’s Most Powerful People Under 30, and been featured in major media, including The Washington Post, Fortune, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox News, and NBC News.

An acclaimed keynote speaker, Banayan has presented the Third Door framework to business conferences and corporate leadership teams around the world, including Apple, Google, Nike, IBM, Snapchat, Salesforce, and Disney.

The larger-than-life journey of an 18-year-old college freshman who set out from his dorm room to track down Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, and dozens more of the world's most successful people to uncover how they broke through and launched their careers.

The Third Door takes readers on an unprecedented adventure--from hacking Warren Buffett's shareholders meeting to chasing Larry King through a grocery store to celebrating in a nightclub with Lady Gaga--as Alex Banayan travels from icon to icon, decoding their success. After remarkable one-on-one interviews with Bill Gates, Maya Angelou, Steve Wozniak, Jane Goodall, Larry King, Jessica Alba, Pitbull, Tim Ferriss, Quincy Jones, and many more, Alex discovered the one key they have in common: they all took the Third Door.

Life, business, success . . . it's just like a nightclub. There are always three ways in.

There's the First Door: the main entrance, where 99 percent of people wait in line, hoping to get in. The Second Door: the VIP entrance, where the billionaires and celebrities slip through. But what no one tells you is that there is always, always . . . the Third Door. It's the entrance where you have to jump out of line, run down the alley, bang on the door a hundred times, crack open the window, sneak through the kitchen--there's always a way.

Whether it's how Bill Gates sold his first piece of software or how Steven Spielberg became the youngest studio director in Hollywood history, they all took the Third Door.
