  • 168: Shawn Askinosie | Quest To Do Meaningful Work
In 2005, Shawn Askinosie left a successful career as a criminal defense lawyer to start a bean to bar chocolate factory and never looked back.

Askinosie Chocolate is a small batch, award winning chocolate factory located in Springfield, Missouri, sourcing 100% of their beans directly from farmers. The only chocolate maker working directly with cocoa farmers on four continents, Shawn travels to regions of Ecuador, the Philippines and Tanzania to source cocoa beans for his chocolate. This allows the chocolate to be traced to the source and labeled authentic single origin. It also enables Askinosie Chocolate to profit share with the farmers, giving them a “Stake In the Outcome,” a principle he learned from author/entrepreneur Jack Stack.

Recently named by Forbes "One of the 25 Best Small Companies in America", Askinosie Chocolate has also been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, on Bloomberg, MSNBCand numerous other national and international media outlets.

The Askinosie Chocolate mission is to serve their farmers, their neighborhood, their customers and each other, sharing the Askinosie Chocolate experience by leaving the world a better place than they found it. The company is currently sustainably feeding over 1,600 students per day in Tanzania and the Philippines, without any donations. Founded at the forefront of the American craft chocolate revolution and regarded by many as a vanguard in the industry, Askinosie Chocolate sets the standard: they are one of the few chocolate makers in the world who press their own cocoa butter (to make their chocolate truly single origin) and the only American craft chocolate maker to produce a natural cocoa powder; they were the first American craft chocolate makers to create white chocolate, as well as a chocolate hazelnut spread (says The New York Times: “one spoonful of Askinosie’s Chocolate Hazelnut Spread and all memory of Nutella is gone”).

Shawn was named by O, The Oprah Magazine "One of 15 Guys Who Are Saving the World." They said, "Why we're fans: The philanthropically-minded chocolate entrepreneur aims to get students thinking about business ethics in a way that could have ripple effects for generations." For his efforts in "Advancing food standards... by creating social, economic, and environmental impact", Shawn was awarded Top Business Leader of the Year in 2013 by the Specialty Food Association. Shawn has been awarded honorary doctorates from University of Missouri-Columbia and Missouri State University. In 2015, Askinosie Chocolate was awarded a complimentary membership to the Clinton Global Initiative for the company’s social efforts around the world. Seth Godin, entrepreneur and author, recently praised the company's model: "[Shawn] has built a practice of creating a worthwhile luxury good that directly benefits people. Not sort of. Not a little. But directly.”

Askinosie Chocolate has received 3 Good Food Awards, considered to be the Oscars of food; 6 silver awards from the Specialty Food Association; and 7 International Chocolate Awards, including the Gold World Award for the Dark Chocolate + Licorice bar. The small team at Askinosie works directly with all of their retailers and sells their chocolate into specialty food stores, luxury boutiques, and high-end grocery chains throughout the US in nearly all fifty states and across the globe.

Shawn's book, recently released, co-written with his daughter Lawren, published by Penguin titled "Meaningful Work: The Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul" is an Amazon #1 New Release. Read Seth Godin's review of the book here. He is a Family Brother at Assumption Abbey, a Trappist monastery near Ava, Missouri and the co-founder of Lost & Found, a grief center serving children and families in Southwest Missouri.

  • 166: Bryan Johnson | Future of the Human Race & Intelligence
Bryan Johnson is founder of Kernel, OS Fund and Braintree. In 2016, he founded Kernel, investing $100M to build advanced neural interfaces to treat disease and dysfunction, illuminate the mechanisms of intelligence, and extend cognition. Kernel is on a mission to dramatically increase our quality of life as healthy lifespans extend. He believes that the future of humanity will be defined by the combination of human and artificial intelligence (HI +AI). $100M commitment to Kernel in an effort to enhance human intelligence and reimagine our future. Unlocking our brain is the most significant and consequential opportunity in history — and it’s time sensitive.

Why now? Because the sooner we begin co-evolving human and machine intelligence, the better. The relationship between human intelligence and artificial intelligence (HI + AI) will necessarily be one of symbiosis.

The challenge and potential of exploring this co-evolutionary future is the biggest story of the next century and one in which a closeness in development velocity is a necessity. In order for that to happen, we need to begin working on HI in earnest.

In 2014, Bryan invested $100M to start OS Fund which invests in entrepreneurs commercializing breakthrough discoveries in genomics, synthetic biology, artificial intelligence, precision automation, and new materials development. My investment thesis was determined by analyzing what would maximally increase the probability that the human race would survive and thrive yet is underfunded relative to its importance.

I concluded it imperative to invest towards a global biological immune system, for us and our planet, enabling us to respond in real-time to risks that threaten our prosperity and build a future more magical than we can currently imagine.

Four years later, OS Fund performance is in the top decile among U.S. firms. Of the 28 investments, we have 4 unicorns, 26 up valuations, and 2 acquisitions.

In 2007, Bryan founded Braintree (acquired Venmo) which he sold to PayPal in 2013 for $800M.

Bryan is an outdoor-adventure enthusiast, pilot, and author of a children's book, Code 7.
Bryan's investments include endeavors to cure age-related diseases and radically extend healthy human life to 100+ (Human Longevity), replicate the human visual cortex using artificial intelligence (Vicarious), mine an asteroid (Planetary Resources), reinvent transportation using autonomous vehicles (Matternet), and reimagine food using biology (Hampton Creek), among others.

  • HOW TO START | Motivation to Inspire Action
Take a listen to this inspirational clip on how and why to start your personal brand and what most people do that makes them quit after 3 weeks. Social media is the ultimate mirror.

Phone call: hey bro I’m trying to start a brand, podcast, business and don’t know what to do and how do I get followers?

Well before I answer that …. why do you even want to do this?

Uh I don't know man….my friends are all doing something, every time I go on social you’re posting something cool and I just feel like I’m wasting my life.

Right so are you trying to post stuff on social media so you can look cool to all your friends, therefore doing something based on other’s people’s standards of you and eventually quit after 3 weeks?

Before developing your brand or account on social media. You need to develop yourself first.

    This doesn’t matter if you’re 15 or 50.

Here’s the reality: most people don’t post on social media because they fear the opinions of others or think they don’t have anything meaningful to say.

I don’t think people understand this but when you post content on social media it’s the ultimate mirror.

Yea it’s a highlight reel but after enough videos, podcasts, interviews the real truth of who you are comes out to the world and you can’t stop it.

So before you get fancy trying to figure out every hack & tip in your mind. Build the foundation of yourself first.

As Jay Samit says - “Everyone wants to change the world, but nobody wants to change themselves.”

and how do you make it so you don’t fear or care about other people’s opinions of you? You need to find a higher destiny to move towards.

    Here’s the straightforward way:

Love yourself. Really care for yourself as if you’re taking care of the person you love the most in this world.

Be honest. Right down your strengths and weaknesses. Be honest because no one will see this. Denial and lying to yourself will hold you hostage.

Now, right down what would happen to your life if you take advantage of your strengths and manage your weaknesses in the most ideal scenario in the next 10 years. So if you’re 21 imagine yourself at 31 - with the ideal life you want, helping the people you want to help, going to the places you want to go to or maybe just to feel better than where you are right now.

Now, I need you to do the same thing but if you close out this video, throw away the piece of paper and say this isn’t for me...in 5 - 10 years where do you think your life’s going to go?

Imagine what will happen in your future if don’t do something about your social life, bad spending habits, addictions, your physical body, what if something terrible happens in your life like your parents dying or a illness diagnosis and you’re not the person you knew you could be.

You need to conceptualize your hell and heaven. Whether you bring your dreams or nightmare into reality…it’s all in your hands.

Why? Because here’s the thing as humans we have awful future literacy. We know very little about what will actually happen in the future. That’s why if you look at Technology every generation has been afraid of the new technology that emerges…all of it…it’s not just social media and iPhone but people were afraid of recorded music and brewing coffee!

Since we have no insight into the actual future. the best way to predict your future is to create it.

If you don’t have a Compelling future that you build BRICK by BRICK everyday your primitive monkey mind will default into the worries of the past and anxieties of the future.

Now you need to understand the real indicator of what you do or do not do in your everyday 24 hours….

So many people know what they’re supposed to be doing but don’t do it….the key to that and some matrix type sh*t is Identity

the entire game is what about you think about yourself when you are with yourself.

Leverage your environment to form you into the person you want to be.
    - You feel like you don’t know yourself? Put yourself in difficult and unknown situations.
    - Low Self Esteem? Surround yourself with people who will lift you higher.
    - Think you think & worry too much? Learn how to do holotropic breathing
    - Think you’re stupid? Spend every damn moment reading a book from a world class expert/teacher and get a mentor
    - Don’t have energy/motivation? Get rid of the people around you who are bringing you down and surround yourself with winners and start taking care of your physical body like what you eat and exercise everyday.
    - Don’t know who you are? Shut off your environment with Mindfulness meditation and ground yourself in that activity everyday.

When you post on social. You can’t post about a facade or perspective of yourself you want people to know about.

If you do….people will see right through it and you’ll gain absolutely no success.

The world has taught us a lie….that success is luck or someone else has to put us on. We have more opportunity right now regardless of where you were born, your race, gender.

Technology has leveled the playing field and only the best of the best will win.

  • 164: Dave Asprey | Becoming Bulletproof Game Changers
Dave Asprey, founder of Bulletproof and author of New York Times bestseller The Bulletproof Diet, is a Silicon Valley investor and technology entrepreneur who spent two decades and over $1 Million to hack his own biology.

Dave lost 100 pounds without counting calories or excessive exercise, used techniques to upgrade his brain and lift his IQ by 20 points, and lowered his biological age while learning to sleep more efficiently in less time. Learning to do these seemingly impossible things transformed him into a better entrepreneur, a better husband, and a better father.

Dave is the creator of the widely popular Bulletproof Coffee, host of the #1 health podcast, Bulletproof Radio, and author of the New York Times bestselling books, The Bulletproof Diet and Head Strong. Through his work Dave provides information, techniques, and keys to taking control of and improving your biochemistry, your body and your mind so they work in unison, helping you execute at levels far beyond what you’d expect, without burning out, getting sick, or allowing stress to control your decisions.

From private brain EEG facilities hidden in a Canadian forest to remote monasteries in Tibet, from Silicon Valley to the Andes, Dave Asprey used hacking techniques and tried everything on himself, obsessively focused on discovering the answers to this one persistent question:

What are the simplest things you can do to be better at everything?

What emerged is the idea of becoming Bulletproof: the state of high performance where you take control of and improve your biochemistry, your body, and your mind so they work in unison, helping you execute at levels far beyond what you’d expect, without burning out, getting sick, or allowing stress to control your decisions. It used to take a lifetime to radically rewire the human body and mind this way, if you were lucky enough to even know it was possible. Technology has changed the rules

Dave founded Bulletproof to make these breakthroughs – and the body and brain you deserve — easily available to you in your everyday life.

When Dave Asprey started his Bulletproof Radio podcast more than five years ago, he sought out influencers in an array of disciplines, from biochemists toiling in unknown laboratories to business leaders changing the world to mediation masters discovering inner peace. His guests were some of the top performing humans in the world, people who had changed their areas of study or even pioneered entirely new fields.

Dave wanted to know: What did they have in common? What mattered most to them? What made them so successful—and what made them tick? At the end of each interview, Dave asked the same question: “What are your top three recommendations for people who want to perform better at being human?”

After performing a statistical analysis of the answers, he found that the wisdom gleaned from these highly successful people could be distilled into three main objectives: finding ways to become smarter, faster, and happier. Game Changers is the culmination of Dave’s years-long immersion in these conversations, offering 46 science-backed, high performance “laws” that are a virtual playbook for how to get better at life.

With anecdotes from game changers like Dr. Daniel Amen, Gabby Bernstein, Dr. David Perlmutter, Arianna Huffington, Esther Perel, and Tim Ferris as well as examples from Dave’s own life, Game Changers offers readers practical advice they can put into action to reap immediate rewards. From taming fear and anxiety to making better decisions, establishing high-performance habits, and practicing gratitude and mindfulness, Dave brings together the wisdom of today’s game-changers to help everyone kick more ass at life.

  • 163: Paul English | $2 Billion Man w/ Bipolar Disorder
Paul is the CTO of Lola.com, the easiest way for a business to manage their employee travel. Previously, Paul was CTO of KAYAK, a travel company he co-founded in 2004, took public in 2012, and sold to Priceline in 2013. Paul is also the founder of GetHuman, a service created to give consumers excellent customer service at any company.

Paul grew up in Boston (as did his parents), his father was a pipefitter at Boston Gas Company, Paul’s first job was delivering the Boston Globe, and he went to Boston public schools until he studied music and computer science at UMASS Boston. (As you can guess, Paul is a Boston Red Sox fan, and his accent gets worse in bahs.)

Paul is the subject of Tracy Kidder’s book “A Truck Full of Money”, published by Random House in September 2016. Which tells the story of Paul English, a kinetic and unconventional inventor and entrepreneur, who as a boy rebelled against authority. Growing up in working-class Boston, English discovers a medium for his talents the first time he sees a computer. As a young man, despite suffering from what would eventually be diagnosed as bipolar disorder, he begins his pilgrim’s journey through the ups and downs in the brave new world of computers. Relating to the Internet as if it’s an extension of his own mind, he discovers that he has a talent for conceiving innovative enterprises and building teams that can develop them, becoming “a Pied Piper” of geeks. His innovative management style, success, and innate sense of fair play inspire intense loyalty. Early on, one colleague observes: “Someday this boy’s going to get hit by a truck full of money, and I’m going to be standing beside him.” Yet when English does indeed make a fortune, when the travel website Kayak is sold for almost two billion dollars—the first thing he thinks about is how to give the money away: “What else would you do with it?” The second thing he thinks is, What’s next?

    Nonprofit Work

Paul is cofounder of Summits Education, an organization that is building education systems in rural Haiti. Summits operates a network of 41 schools in Haiti's Central Plateau, employing over 350 educators, and serving 10,000 students. Paul first went to Haiti in 2003. (Paul wè bote ak espwa.)

Paul is a Director of Partners In Health and of Village Health Works, both organizations providing quality healthcare to populations of extreme poverty. Paul is also very interested in problems of homelessness in Boston.

Paul’s latest project is to bring an MLK Memorial to Boston.

    Ancient History

Paul was previously President of Boston Light Software, an ecommerce company sold to Intuit, where Paul then served as VP Technology. Paul was a cofounder/Director (with his brother Ed) of Intermute, a security software company sold to Trend Micro.

Paul was briefly an entrepreneur in-residence at Greylock, the founder of the World Xiangqi League, VP of Engineering at NetCentric, SVP of Engineering and Product Management at Interleaf. He also did contract programming for the US Air Force, operations research programming for Data General, programming for a medical device company, and even some video game software and sound-effect development.

Paul received a BS and MS in computer science from University of Massachusetts. Paul was named Chief Technology Officer of the year by Mass Technology Leadership Council in 2009.
