  • Once upon a time... I was 'normal'.

I grew up in a 'normal', healthy home with no thoughts or experiences with mental Illness. Then one day it happened to me.

  • Mental Illness Research with Gabrielle Sheehan Chair of ONE IN FIVE

The Mental Illness/Health sector is broken! Mental health practitioners are over extended, wait lists for treatment are horrendous and the rate of suicide is increasing exponentially.

Of all the money invested in the Mental Health sector only a tiny amount is being turned toward research. The question is 'how can we fix a problem we don't understand'?

We are trying to fix a car with a blown engine by repainting the chassis. The core of the problem still exists, and worse, we don't really understand the how and why the car won't work.

One in Five is endeavoring to redress this imbalance. Understanding the science of Mental Illness is crucial if we are to stop reacting to Mental Illness.

Gabrielle Sheehan takes some of her valuable time to chat to us about the work and history of One in Five. Her wisdom and heart-felt compassion for people living with Mental Illness is an inspiration.

  • Denise Mueller - Mother, Communicator and Carer Pt 2

This weeks STP is slightly different. We initially reached out to Denise because of her article 'I Thought I Understood My Daughter's Mental Illness, But I Had No Idea' from the, US based, National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI). You can read the article here... I Thought I Understood My Daughter's Mental Illness, But I Had No Idea | NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness.

On many levels the interview became a free-flowing discussion about caring for a person with Mental Illness whilst having been diagnosed with Mental Illness yourself. Poignant and heartfelt, Denise's story is in turn heartbreaking and funny, but always told with the compassion and wisdom of a brave Mum doing her best.

  • Demystifying Trauma and Uncovering Hope With Dr Amar Dhall

I am immensely pleased to bring you a conversation with the amazing Dr Amar Dhall from the Canberra Trauma and Wellbeing Centre. Don't be co 'put-of' by the name as all the programs are available online anywhere in the world.

We discus trauma and the reality of trauma being a universal experience- but it is not the end of the world. Just because you experience trauma, does not mean it has to define you. We also discover how to uncover - not find- HOPE!

  • Carer Self-Care with Merey!

There is no greater made up proverb than 'Carer, care for thyself!' The first rule of 'Duty of Care', is to make sure that YOU are safe. If you are incapacitated, exhausted, broken etc you cannot care for those around you.

You are important too. Don't forget to look after yourself!
