On the afternoon of May 14th, 2015, a wallpaper installer named Donald Spence had just finished a job in an upscale neighborhood of Washington D.C. and was driving home, when he saw smoke pouring out of the upstairs windows of a high-end mansion. He ran up to knock on the door, fearing the residents were still inside, but all he could hear were dogs barking. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found four dead bodies: those of the house's owners, D.C. power couple Savvas and Amy Savopolous, their 10-year-old son Philip, and the housekeeper, Vera Figueroa. But what investigators were not prepared for was the story that would unfold about what had happened to the Savopolous family and Ms. Figueroa in the day and night leading up to the fire. It would reveal 22 hours of sheer fear, torture and greed. But the perpetrator would face justice thanks to the small clues left in a rare luxury sports car, a construction vest and hat, and, ultimately, on a slice of Domino's pepperoni pizza.
