  • Squad Goals #31: Tough Love (On Samara and Jack)
Nick, Chip, and Kurabara are back this week to continue talking about the loyalty missions in Mass Effect 2. This week, they discuss Samara and Jack. They begin by talking about the strength of the characters biotics, and Kura talks about an achievement you can get by using Miranda and Jacob’s biotics together.
As Samara’s loyalty mission brings Shepard back to Omega, the guys talk about some of the missions that are now available upon your second visit. They talk about Ish and Sel, two Salarians who ask Shepard to retrieve some packages. After discussing how odd the quest is, they realize that the quest is bugged and talk about its proper completion. Next, they talk about some odd dialog with Captain Gavorn about the Vorcha, although it is not clear if there is an associated quest. They also talk about the Patriarch questline which has Shepard talking to an old Krogan and learning about Aria’s history on Omega.
After reviewing the Samara loyalty mission, the guys all admit that they chose to stick with Samara instead of choosing Morinth. Kura comments how choosing Morinth can let Shepard romance her which leads to Morinth killing Shepard. They talk about how tragic Samara’s backstory is, and Kura talks about how tragic the story of the girl Morinth killed is. They also talk about the mechanic of having to get Morinth’s attention at the bar while not getting kicked out. They discuss the lack of combat in the mission. Nick appreciates the way the final dialog with Morinth plays out by using your paragon/renegade options. They also talk about attempting to romance Samara.
Finally, they talk about the Jack loyalty mission. Nick brings up the explosion that Jack triggered and talks about its magnitude. Then, Nick wonders just how effective Jack’s return to the Cerberus facility was for her. They talk about Jack’s feeling towards Cerberus and Chip admits he brought Miranda on the mission. Nick says Jack needs some empathy. Nick wonders if Jack or Miranda are more high maintenance. They talk about Jack as a representation of abuse.

  • The Tauren & The Goblin #138: The Sylvanas Cinematic and Arena Headcanon
Nick and Katie are back to talk about the Sylvanas cinematic that was officially released as part of the 9.2 PTR. They immediately get into it, with Nick sniping at reddit comments he read complaining about the underdevelopment of the Jailer and "bad writing." They talk about how this cinematic is starting to give the answers people were looking for in the cinematic at the end of the Sanctum of Domination. Katie celebrates that our speculation that Sylvanas would be split (based off the Uther Afterlives short) panned out. They look at how the cinematic addresses the concept of redemption and forgiveness from the point of view of the other characters, especially Baine. They point out the characters are not there to forgive Sylvanas and prove that she has yet to earn any sort of redemption, including by herself. They discuss the ability for characters to pass between each other through their wounds, which leads to Nick comparing Sylvanas to a very creepy starfish. They evaluate the role of the Ranger-General part of Sylvanas in taking responsibility for her other half's actions, and her nobility in doing so. Nick considers how little free will the Ranger-General is given, and notes the irony as free will was a major motiviation for Banshee Sylvanas. Katie points out that despite being in Warcraft III, Sylvanas and Uther never met each other before. They compare the role of Arthas in Wrath of the Lich King to the Jailer in the Shadowlands. Nick wonders how swapping the Shadowlands expansion with the Jailer and making it fit as 8.2 while expanding Nyalotha and N'Zoth into a full blown expansion would have worked.
Nick comments that the PTR and betas are hurting WoW's ability to tell a narrative. Katie rebuts.
Katie answers a question about headcanon in arenas.

  • WoW! Talk! #200: What Are We Even Talking About?
Nick, Rei, and Harv are joined by a returning Eric to talk about what’s been going on in the WoW community lately, and so much more. Eric talks about playing his warlock recently and Nick brings up the new Incubus model that has been added for warlock demons. They talk about how imps compare to Gremlins which leads to an off-topic discussion about Gremlins and then Keanu Reeves movies. Nick says that warlocks should be able to glyph to alternate looks for the pets without using a tame mechanic like hunters.
Rei talks about running mythic+ without knowing the mechanics. She also talks about running raids on alts. She also brings up the mage tower which no one has had time to play. Harv talks about raiding and also playing some Final Fantasy XIV which lets Nick talk about how awesome Wondrous Tails is but also talk about how WoW needs to get their schedule together as far as releasing regular content. He points out that Destiny has almost regular weekly content and there’s no excuse for WoW not to. They also discuss if the Mage tower is too difficult or just difficult enough.
Next, Nick brings up the WoW Community Council and how they were debating if too many black NPC’s were in Stormwind, which led to some council members being outed as racists and kicked off the council. They talk about the disappointment with Blizzard for not getting ahead of this problem as it should have been obvious.
Finally, they celebrate 200 episodes by thanking the listeners for downloading and listening. Our next live show is scheduled for 1/3/22 at 10:30 pm E at twitch.tv/mashthosebuttons.
