Dr. Ann Burgess is the subject of Director Abigail Fuller’s “Mastermind: To Think Like a Killer” (now streaming on Hulu), and both women join me to discuss their intriguing new true-crime docuseries. In the late 1960s, Dr. Burgess pioneered the use of profiling along with the FBI’s Division of Behavioral Sciences. Her research helped the bureau catch some of the most notorious serial killers and rapists in the country despite intense skepticism of the fledgling practice. The two discuss the evolution of victims’ rights, Dr. Burgess’s experience as a woman in a field made up entirely of men, and how her formal training and years of being a nurse informed this novel approach to criminology and interrogation.
