Matter of Fat Podcast

Hi, hello & welcome to a special Q&A episode of Matter of Fat: a body positive podcast with Midwest Sensibilities! Co-hosts Cat Polivoda and Saraya Boghani highlight community voices with a focus on body size, body positivity, & fat liberation.

Summer is in full swing, y’all! Instead of the regular episode format the ladies decided to change it up. What started as a minisode idea became a full-fledged Q&A session. Hit play to hear some fire listener questions like, “when did you realize fat acceptance and body positivity were different? Or, bopo wasn’t inclusive?” and “is a hotdog a sandwich?”.

There’s so much more in store and *TEASER* we get some backstory on Cat’s royal origins and Saraya’s inability to recognize flirting among other gems.

Welcome to season 2 episode 4 of Matter of Fat: a body positive podcast with Midwest sensibilities! Co-hosts Cat Polivoda and Saraya Boghani highlight community voices with a focus on body size, body positivity, & fat liberation.

The Fat Dish is really dishy this week! There weren’t any new updates on places and things but, hoooo boi, have Cat and Saraya shared what’s going on in their lives. Highlight reel: Cat was featured for Pollen with a beautiful write up by Andrea Sanow and is going on an overdue vacation and Saraya enjoyed a week in Atlanta and fell into the weird world of BRAVO television. Also, Saraya challenges all those who haven’t got selfie game (i.e. Saraya) to post to the Friends and Fans page for practice.

C+S were so excited to interview Sean McPherson whose dulcet tones you may have heard over the radio waves, at a Trivia Mafia night, or through Heiruspecs and other musical groups. Sean brought so much thought and vulnerability to the interview by talking about parenting, confronting internalized fatphobia, and letting us in on the origin story of Twinkie Jiggles. And, honestly, so much more!

Dirt and Discourse was quick and dirty this episode. It’s summer in the midwest which means it’s time for you to wear what makes you most comfortable. That’s all. That’s it. Really. Truly.

Do you! It's summer! Wear what makes you comfortable in the hot heat.

You made it to the third episode for season two of Matter of Fat: a body positive podcast with Midwest sensibilities! Co-hosts Cat Polivoda and Saraya Boghani highlight community voices with a focus on body size, body positivity, & fat liberation.

The Fat Dish is robust, y’all! First, the summer Big Fat Super Swap is June 15th. Also on June 15th is the TC Juneteenth event. The inaugural Podcast Du Nord conference will be June 22nd. Twin Cities Pride will also be the weekend of the 22nd. Cake’s Fat Splash pool party sold out but check out Allgo to see where other events will be held around the US.

Saraya shared her adventures in lawn bowling and spending more time with Cat by catching the movie Booksmart, being interviewed by the Star Tribune, and attending a New Leaders Council - Twin Cities fundraising and celebration event. Cat was part of the NLC Louisiana chapter back in the day and is excited to support the TC chapter. Cat is a fan of Cardio Bay, not a fan of plantar fasciitis, and is gearing up for a summer road trip extravaganza!

C+S were so excited to interview Nancy Alayon - a badass business owner of the Salvadorian food truck Que Tal Street Eats. Nancy talks about her story as a matter of fat and the many identities that interact in that story. She also encourages everyone to reconsider your perspectives on emotional eating and how she is shaping the culture of the Twin Cities through recipes passed down from generation to generation and her own culinary twists.

Dirt and Discourse (D+D if ya nasty) includes information from GLSEN, Fran Tirado, and a suggestion to center queer voices and follow the money during PRIDE and other seasons.

Welcome to the second season of Matter of Fat: a body positive podcast with Midwest sensibilities! Co-hosts Cat Polivoda and Saraya Boghani highlight community voices with a focus on body size, body positivity, & fat liberation.

The gals are excited to be back in action with the first episode in 2019!

Cat and Saraya bring back the Fat Dish since there’s so much to dish about! The Subversive Sirens are hosting a Dive-In Fundraiser to support their competition in the IGLA Aquatics Championship, Cake Plus-Size Resale’s spring sale will include delicious pupusas from Qué Tal Street Eats, and the Radical Health Alliance is hosting a Fat Activism Salon. Check out links below for information.

The classic interview features our two heroines recapping their winter hiatus from the podcast. Saraya shares a bit about her travels to Kenya and an anecdote about assumptive motherhood and waxes poetic on friendship. Awww! Cat has been very busy building out a curriculum on confidence, being a featured voice on MPR, a City Pages recognition for fat activism and changing the world (ahh heck yeah), and applying for the Real World. Wowza, what a busy time!

Don’t despair! Dirt + Discourse is back in a big way. Per usual, the discussion ventures into the world of pop culture and much of the discussion focuses on Lindy West’s Shrill and the Hulu adaptation. The ladies talk about their favorite parts, not so favorite parts, and how fat activism is growing and can lend itself to controversy and growth.

Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate and to all those that wish they could have attended. It was a fun night and here’s to more fun in the next season!

The Fat Dish is chock full of the ladies waxing poetic about trick or treating. Cat shares her dream of turning a flu shot into a romantic comedy, living her best audio book life, and a stellar yoga session. Saraya also enjoyed the yoga class through the Radical Health Alliance, mentioned her work costume contest exploits, and a literal and wonderful hollering experience. Both hosts are excited to announce the first pod event coming up on December 4th at Spaces in North Loop.

Upcoming local events: Alok Vaid Menon’s performance “Beyond Gender” on November 3rd and voting on November 6th. Check out links below to see who is on your ballot and learn more about attending the performance.

This episode’s interview is with Virgie Tovar. Virgie is a fat activist, scholar, author, and style icon. Her recent book You Have the Right to Remain Fat is a beautiful narrative of growing up fat and realizing that you don’t need to wait to live your best life. Her interview is joyous and thoughtful. Make sure to check out her horror movie recs regardless of the season! Fair warning - Virgie's interview is a bit quiet so just another reason to crank up the volume on this rad babe's work.

In Dirt + Discourse, Cat and Saraya receive a question about Health at Every Size and how reliable (or unreliable) BMI is as an indication of health.

Many thanks to you for listening and reading, Michael for the question, KFAI and Mason Butler for supporting Matter of Fat, Allison Anne Design + Create for our logo, and Kyle Werstein for composing and producing our theme music.

Welcome to the fifth episode of Matter of Fat: a body positive podcast with Midwest sensibilities! Co-hosts Cat Polivoda and Saraya Boghani highlight community voices with a lens on body size, body positivity, & fat liberation.

This episode, Cat and Saraya update each other on what's happening in the Twin Cities and their lives during The Fat Dish, talk with their guest Andy Kuhlmann about their story as a matter of fat, and dive into the Dirt and Discourse. This episode was originally released on October 17th 2018.

In the Fat Dish, Cat chats upcoming Pollen Midwest events, her shop Cake Plus-Size Resale’s birthday, seeing Nicole Byer, and being part of a panel for Matriarch Digital Media during Twin Cities Startup Week. Saraya tells us about her recent trip to Colorado, seeing Rupi Kaur perform, and being on a panel about Body Positivity & Fat Liberation.

Upcoming local events include: The Big Fat Super Swap on October 20th from 1-3PM at the Nokomis Community Center in South Minneapolis. Also on Saturday, October 20th, the local chapter of Fat Girls Hiking is hosting a hike at Elm Creek Park Reserve.

This episode’s interview is with Andy Kuhlman. Andy recounts the beginnings of their personal fat activism and co-founding the Big Fat Super Swap, shares a bit about their comedic background, expresses the woes of finding clothing to fit their body and sense of style as a non-binary, superfat person, and shares their love of Sumo on Japanese Public Television and The Adventure Zone podcast.

In Dirt + Discourse, Cat and Saraya discuss Weight Watcher’s recent rebrand to WW ( or, “Wellness” that “Works” - quotes ours, not theirs). Saraya’s got questions about what identity they’re trying to sell with this rebrand and why. She encourages us to “follow the money”! Cat questions their true commitment to wellness and challenges us to recognize that if diets worked for most people WW wouldn’t be in business. (It’s truly one heck of a business model.)

Many thanks to you for listening and reading, KFAI and Mason Butler for supporting Matter of Fat, Allison Anne Design + Create for our logo, and Kyle Werstein for composing and producing our theme music.
