Mavs Outsiders

After losing to the Suns, the Mavs needed a win to get back on track. Well, the team seemed to understand that as well and came out with murder on their minds. The Grizzlies were coming off of a back-to-back with Ja getting the MVP chatter sparked but all of that was put to rest when Luka and the gang got to work.

A 41-point blowout in the home opener, another big game from Christian Wood, and the Mavs look like a very dangerous team right now.

No Reese in this recap, and no credentials in sight, so Bibs got to pontificate solo in this one.

Aye man, Imma keep it a BEAN I don't feel like writing these show notes. The Dallas Mavericks were well on their way to blowing out the Suns as they did in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals, but then things got weird.

Missed free throws and questionable coaching decisions cost us this game, but there were some bright spots.

We get into it all.

Oh, and yes I recorded this on my phone. I was unable to focus on setting up late in the game because of how things were going. lol

The NBA season is finally here. The Outsiders wanted to do something special for this one so they reached out to two of their favorite international Mavs fans, Ishaan (@IshaanBhatta) of Fadeaway World and Matej (@MatejSportinfo) of Sportinfo.Si. In this episode, Reese and Bibs talk about the Mavs first two pre-season games. The Mavericks faced the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Orlando Magic this week in tune-up games and major decisions are already being made based on what we've seen thus far.

To start the pod, the Outsiders discussed the OKC game and their observations at length. They discuss McKinley Wright IV's 10 assists and 0 turnovers as well as the games that both Josh Green and Jaden Hardy had. Jaden Hardy had an exciting game where he started cold but got incredibly hot in the fourth quarter and ended the game with a very impressive stat line. Reese and Bibs weigh in on those results and what they may or may not mean for the team's future.

Next, the Outsiders discussed the Orlando Magic game. Luka Doncic returned to the lineup for this one and it was our first opportunity to see what the Mavs big rotation (with regard to Javale and Wood) might look like. Wood was very impressive in this game and Reese and Bibs discussed what this may or may not mean as we approach the regular season.

There were two major developments this week in Mavs land. The first is the fact that Spencer Dinwiddie is moving to the bench. The Outsiders discussed who they would like to start and why.

Finally, with the Mavs conceding that Frank and Josh are not ready for lead ball handler duties, the idea of signing Facundo Campazzo has come to the table. The Outsiders discuss how they feel about that idea as well.

This past week we got to see the new Mavs twice. First, in a live practice that aired on the NBA app, then later on NBAtv. Then we got to see a full scrimmage on Saturday. It was nice to see the guys and start to get excited about the new season.

In this episode, the Outsiders welcomed Mia (@IamMia_Mi) of the Hot Take SZN podcast (@HotTakeSZN), Shad Miller (@ShadMiller13) of The Uncool Urban, and Tyler Lennon (@Tyler_Lennon) of Front Porch News/Chad's Media for what will be the first of many panels we'll host this season.

We started off with Reese playing his version of The NBA on TNT's "Who he play for?": Former Mavs Edition. See how the panel did in naming the new homes of former Mavs players across the league.

We then moved to our observations from the Fan Jam and the live practice. Josh Green was the clear standout and the panel discussed their expectations of "The Sugar Glider" for the upcoming season.

Of course, the biggest acquisition of the offseason was Christian Wood. A person whose past brings many question marks but whose game creates a lot of excitement. Will he buy in? Can he be an All-Star? The panel discusses all possibilities for the new big man as he works to earn a new contract in the coming offseason.

Somehow, the panel spent a good bit of time discussing how the roster changes will impact Dwight Powell's role on the team as well. Will he still be in the rotation this year?

Finally, we discussed Frank as the 3rd ballhandler and our overall expectations for the upcoming season.

The NBA season is almost upon us and this week kicked off with Media Day. This episode was recorded prior to the media day festivities but The Outsiders are clairvoyant and happened to hit most of the hot topics from Mavs media day.

First up was the idea of Frank Ntilikina as the 3rd ball handler. The Mavs doubled and later tripled down on believing in Frank as the primary PG off the bench and Reese and Bibs had some thoughts. We then moved to Christian Wood. The media day's hot topic was the idea of Christian Wood coming off the bench and his potential feelings about it. Kidd did confirm that this is the plan and Wood joked during media day about not knowing this was the case, but it was just that a joke. Reese and Bibs discussed this topic prior to media day and their feelings did not change after the day's events.

Finally, with regard to Mavs-specific topics, the Outsiders discussed what the Mavs rotations should be. The team is deep but what does that mean for everyone's minutes and roles?

Sticking with basketball, the Outsiders talked about ESPN's top 5 players, the reaction to the list, and whether or not we agree with the rankings. Luka came in 3rd on the list behind Giannis Antentokounmpo and Nikola Jokic with Joel Embiid and Steph Curry rounding out the list. The pair had some strong opinions about how one fanbase reacted to this list.

The podcast couldn't end there, however. Reese and Bibs spent the rest of the podcast talking about the movies Barbarian and The Woman King.

EuroBasket was a lot of fun but the tournament ended and Spain came out on top. Juancho Hernangomez aka Bo Cruz released a very watchable movie on Netflix this year about a guy getting it out of the mud and becoming an NBA player (Hustle), then proceeded to go off in the EuroBasket Final and secure the Finals MVP. To tie a bow on the fairytale story, Willy Hernangomez won the EuroBasket MVP (handed to him by Mavs and German legend Dirk Nowitzki).

Side note: Willy wore number 14 (Dirk's number in international play which was retired by Germany to kick off EuroBasket play) and Juancho wore number 41 (Dirk's NBA number of course) which made this tournament in Germany that much more special. I believe Germany had to get FIBA to break their rules to allow them to retire Dirk's number.

Willy and Juancho are already NBA players and will look to build on the success from EuroBasket, but there were plenty of other players without NBA contracts who were looking to secure them. In this episode, Bibs and Reese discussed 5 guys who should make their way to the NBA at some point. Could any of them end up in Dallas?

Sticking with the Eurobasket theme, Bibs and Reese then talked about Luka Doncic. Doncic took a beating at Eurobasket and barely made it through their last game (an embarrassing loss to Poland). There was talk on Twitter about whether or not Luka should even be playing in these games. Bibs and Reese weigh in on this topic.
