Nick Lim openly admits at the start of this podcast, he’s been someone who’s fairly afraid of being caught out … of not knowing enough. He also says … “I’m always looking for endorsement, authority … someone to say you’re the right person”.

Yet he is recognised around town as a hustler, someone who connects people and gets things done. In fact, I first met Nick during the organisation of a massive design thinking event he was leading.

In this episode, we get to understand how this possible paradox has played out for Nick and most recently how he has done some truely significant things … things he and others least expected.

This includes,

• hosting a “Come cook with Me” series of worldwide live streams during COVID, raising over $8,000 for charity whilst engaging with audience members in the US, UK, Japan, Malaysia and across Australia.

• introducing to his workplace “Anythings Possible Thursday” where he began wearing a loud, floral shirt on a Thursday in a large multinational mining company convincing everyone he knows what he’s talking about in finance.

• transforming his Rotary club to become focused on growing membership and creating impact through events using a unique organisational governance and structure called Holacracy.

Nevellene Linquist has had a successful career in both commercial businesses and organisations in the Not for Profit sector. Over the years her professional development has enabled her to acquire new knowledge and understand interesting concepts, however a couple of years ago her participation in the 10 month long ELIAS program (Engaging Leaders Innovating Across Sectors) … changed everything.

In her own words … “I was a new person”.

This program combined the structure of the Centre for Social Impact at UWA with the internationally acclaimed Presencing Institute’s concept of Theory U, in a program of experiential and adaptive learning.

And, the most exciting thing for Nevellene, has been her recent move to the education sector … to a school environment where the fundamental ELIAS practices of deep listening and creating a space to “sit in” are encouraged. She has landed in a place where everyday there is the opportunity to be immersed in adopting her beliefs, values and spiritual influences to sense the emerging future.

Amy and David Bandy faced a challenge many couples experience when trying to start a family…mother nature was not cooperating. The traditional approach of IVF was also not a guarantee, so Amy took it upon herself to embrace nature and all things spiritual.

She listened to family, sought advice from many experts, including practitioners from non-traditional fields … but most importantly followed her own intuition.

She began to understand the strong connection between her spiritual self and her physical self. In fact, she concluded that …”all this time I have been running away from the person I really was” (sic). She embraced the suggestion made to her … “you’re a very different person, Amy”

After 5 years of heartache … Amy conceived and soon Eleanor joined their family.

The journey continues as Amy uses all her learning and new found wisdom to guide the life of Eleanor and ensure she has the best chance to experience the ultimate “good life”.

Justin Davies has spent his career continually trying to “keep off the rocks” whilst learning as it goes. Starting one business within weeks of the Tech Wreck in the early 2000’s and then setting up his current business Emergination in 2008 … right in the middle of the 2008 financial crash.

He honed his sales skills in the digital world right at the start of the internet era … at a time when business models were rapidly changing all the time. All trying to keep up with the continual evolution of technology.

As a pioneer in tech innovation in WA, Justin has played a pivotal role in shaping the local business scene and in a way that involved “just having a go” in an ever changing business environment.

And, much of this coming from a chance opportunity of sitting next to an international visitor to WA at a Tech Conference in the 90’s.

This is a story of opportunity … with continual learning and growth.

History of Numero

The creator of Numero®, Rev. Frank Drysdale (1932-2011), was forced into early retirement in 1989 when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. One of Frank’s own remedies to this situation was to keep himself mentally fit by playing mind games, many of which involved cards. He enlisted the help of his young grandchildren to help him pass the time playing different card games.

Numero® was developed as a product of these sessions with his grandchildren, as Frank started with a simple concept and developed it into the game we now call Numero®.

Numero® was demonstrated in public for the first time in 1993 when presented at the Mathematics Association of Western Australia annual conference. The reception it received prompted Frank, and his wife Joan (1936-2018), to print 2000 packs of Numero® which were collated and packaged in Frank’s back shed by a band of willing helpers. Numero® had been born and Frank and Joan Drysdale were kept busy holding workshops and collating and packing Numero®.

When it was clear that Numero® was going to be a success, Frank and Joan gifted the copyright ownership of the game to Alzheimer’s WA. This has ensured that royalties from the sale of all Numero® products are channelled to Alzheimer’s WA, providing money to help fund various dementia-related programs throughout WA and the rest of the world.

A new era began in 2018 with publishing and distribution rights returning to the family fold, with their daughter, Julie, regaining control of Numero’s® future, through Independent Education and Training Pty Ltd. This company was formed to look after Numero® going forward and will cover everything Numero® related, incuding publishing, sales, distribution, marketing, professional development and the interschool competitions run in Western Australia on an annual basis.

This is Julie’s story about how her passion for Numero® came about and how it gives her a focus on teaching other.

STORY 1

Paul Price has been inspired by a saying that goes something like this …

“Don’t ask what the world needs … ask what lights you up … because what the world needs is a whole bunch of people that are lit up” (sic)

It’s fascinating to realise this comes from a man who was ranked 4th best in the world in squash, won Commonwealth Games medals, performed consistently on the world sporting stage, coached Australian teams and has been creatively driven to internationally release 3 albums as a talented musician.

He has certainly been “lit up” many times in his life … and it’s happening again.

As  a  Flow  Coach,  Paul now brings his world-class high performance experience together with his passion for the science of flow state to  partner with others to chase & attain what truly makes them come alive.

STORY 2

Lisa Dobrin is an authentic, empathic and values-based leader. Her executive leadership spans 20+ years across commercial, not for profit and local government community services. She is a strong believer in equity, diversity and working selflessly with others for the greater good.

Lisa is currently the CEO of the WA Aids Council and sets her daily goals to make a real difference.

BUT, the journey to this position came after a tough time for her. Being out of work before taking this role … she was financially, emotionally and professionally challenged during this period. However, Lisa was able to take meaning, inspiration and spiritual awareness from the experience, to become the inspired leader she is today.

In her words:-

“ wondering … what the hell had happened … how I’d got here, how in the blink of an eye, and a flick of a switch, and a flip of a coin … life had changed … radically changed.

She has words of wisdom for everyone who at some stage is challenged in their life.

2020 was “COVID crazy” and he we recap with excerpts from 3 episodes … from storytellers who were directly effected by COVID isolation…and away from their homes.

Each of these stories were from a time when the first wave of COVID was really taking hold in Australia and around the world.

Story 1:

Kate had been on a career strategy that involved working between Perth and Melbourne for some time. But once lockdown in Victoria started … she was stuck there. She reflects on what this does for her business and her career choices and also gives an insight into her experience of businesses changing their models to cope with a new world.

Story 2:

Misty chose to go to Melbourne for a short term personal visit BUT due to a unique set of circumstances became a casualty of the Victorian Lockdown. She had a place to stay with her partner and could still teach via remote learning opportunities … but it still was not easy. He comments about the impact on her mental health are insightful and give a clear understanding of how tough it was. Misty also predicts what Victoria would be like when the lockdown was over … see how close she was to the truth.

Story 3:

Gareth is used to working and living remotely … all around the world. He’s a seasoned professional and has adopted a totally flexible approach to work … so being stuck in Bulgaria during the first wave of COVID was an experience he took in his stride.

Nonetheless, it wasn’t without it’s challenges, and during his story we are given a clear impression of how the Bulgarian’s reacted to the crisis and how an Aussie with limited use of the Bulgarian language got accurate news. We also find out about preparing for the complicated journey home.

"The most pathetic, horrible meeting I have ever experienced"

This quote is a personal reflection of a pivotal moment in the life of David Bandy.

He has been a “sparkie”, a professional cricketer, a project manager, a box breaker … but most importantly … he is a leader of men … a real community influencer. That’s why at the age of around 40 years, he has chosen to become a police officer.

The experiences in his life as a tradesman and a professional athlete have had many similarities. These ultimately influenced his important decision to enter The Force.
