Medication Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder

Listen Later

In the U.S. 47,000 people died from opioid overdose in 2017 alone but most people who could benefit from medications for opioid use disorder (OUD) do not receive them. Dr. Scott Steiger argues that OUD is a treatable chronic brain disease and should be treated accordingly. Medications for OUD are effective and save lives but they are not available to many people who need them; denying access to them is denying appropriate medical treatment.
