#023-As a high-achieving, goal-oriented physician, you are no stranger to the stresses that come with the art and science of healing patients. Sometimes, though, in that pursuit to save a life, emotions can run high.
Many times, in the effort to advocate for our patients, these well-intentioned emotions run amok, and we lose control. Emotions, at its core, is the strongest feeling that we have as humans. Our hearts flutter when we think of our children, we feel the excitement when we achieve a hard-fought goal, and we cry when we suffer loss.
But when our emotions are not controlled, they veer too far on either extreme. Fall too far on one extreme, and you can enter a rage and fall too far toward the other, we enter a state a bliss and forget about the world around us.
As with all aspects of medicine (and in life), moderation is the ultimate goal. Getting control of our emotions is a necessary task toward preventing and recovering from physician burnout.
So how do you get started?
Let’s discuss four ways to gain control over our emotions.
